Although I am African-American, I grew up in a multicultural community where Celia Cruz's music pumped from the speakers in the windows of my neighbors. And no matter who you were or where you were from, if you were in the neighborhood, you knew the lyrics! I was always fascinated by Celia Cruz and her fabulous wardrobe and beautiful smile! I also loved how she embraced her African heritage through her music. Because of her, visiting Cuba is on my bucket list! An icon and legend.......Azucar!

I should write a book.

Similar experience. Back in the mid 80's I was in a restaurant with some friends when we were all hearing this song for the first time. None of us were Spanish speaking so to us it sounded like, "One ton tomato. I need a one ton tomato." As the years passed I lived in Mexico for short while and traveled extensively in Mexico and Central America, slowly and eventually acquiring maybe 50 % fluency in Spanish. But I'll always refer to this as the "One ton tomato" song, and it will always be one of my favorites with Spanish lyrics.
Because Cuba was on the side of Freedom there, while Ronald Reagan supported the apartheid regime - He would've loved to emulate that if he could get away with it.
