This song brings back so many great childhood memories from the 70s! Although I am African-American, I grew up in a multicultural community where Celia Cruz's music pumped from the speakers in the windows of my neighbors. And no matter who you were or where you were from, if you were in the neighborhood, you knew the lyrics! I was always fascinated by Celia Cruz and her fabulous wardrobe and beautiful smile! I also loved how she embraced her African heritage through her music. Because of her, visiting Cuba is on my bucket list! An icon and legend.......Azucar!

This song makes me feel good, and brings back memories from childhood. I grew up in Venice CA and all of the kids in the neighborhood played together. I remember hearing this song, being played often amongst neighbors, as if it were the backdrop in sound for us, the children playing together. Very heartwarming.❤

I remember when I was kid growing up in Miami in the 70's, when a gang of ten year olds could ride their spider bikes all the way to Matheson Hammock, spend the day at the beach, eat a hot dog, soda and bag of chips for like 1.50, then ride home before the street lights came on ... we were quite a posse; Irish, Jewish, Cuban, Italian and P-Rican all riding 'dirty' with playing cards clothes pinned to the spokes flapping along singing "One ton Tomatooooo" ... good times. I should write a book.

You should do a Video or Movie of your time growing up in Miami in the 70's as a kid amigo. Its a great story pal. And would make a great screen play. Contact Andy Garcia in Los Angeles,. He would love your project and probably back it. Guantanamera amigo!

Cubans are passionate about food music and dancing. It's what makes them one of most famous Latin music of all time especially in the 30s to 60s. I love Celia Cruz. She expressed the beauty of Cuba through her music.

I used to work in a spanish restaurant that played this song. Myself, being unable to speak even the slightest bit of spanish, would substitute "One dollar melon... Why eat a one dollar melon" for the lyrics. Still have no idea what it's saying. Love this track.

      @RobinDeal-fm8bh 2 месяца назад +1

Similar experience. Back in the mid 80's I was in a restaurant with some friends when we were all hearing this song for the first time. None of us were Spanish speaking so to us it sounded like, "One ton tomato. I need a one ton tomato." As the years passed I lived in Mexico for short while and traveled extensively in Mexico and Central America, slowly and eventually acquiring maybe 50 % fluency in Spanish. But I'll always refer to this as the "One ton tomato" song, and it will always be one of my favorites with Spanish lyrics.

    Yo soy un hombre sincero
    De donde crece la palma
    Y antes de morirme quiero
    Echar mis versos del alma
    Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Mi verso es de un verde claro
    Y de un carmín encendido
Mi verso es un ciervo herido
Que busca en el monte amparo
    Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
    Cultivo una rosa blanca
    En julio como en enero
    PARA el amigo sincero
Que me da su mano franca
    Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Con los pobres de la tierra
    Quiero yo mi suerte echar
    El arroyo de la sierra
Me complace más que el mar
    Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
    Guantanamera in English
    I am a truthful man
From where the palm tree grows
    And before dying I want
To let out the verses of my soul
    My verse is light green
    And it is flaming red
My verse is a wounded stag
Who seeks refuge on the mountain
    I grow a white rose
In July just as in January
    For the honest friend
Who gives me his OPEN hand
With the poor people of the earth
I want to cast my lot
    The brook of the mountains
Gives me more pleasure than the sea

I am a truthful man; I come from where the palm tree grows,
I am a truehearted man, who comes from where the palm trees grow,
Before I lay down my life, I long to coin the verses of my soul
    Chorus
I plant a snowy rose in January and July,
I grow a snowy rose in January and July,
For the open-hearted friend who puts a helping hand in mine
    Chorus
The words that I write are radiant crimson and emerald bright,
The poems that I write are radiant crimson and emerald bright,
My verses are a wounded deer seeking shelter in the mountain height.

It is a Spanish classic that everyone loves. You can actually improvise and make up your own lyrics - in the stances. Beautifull song.
