Correct, Vermont Yankee and Fukushima Daiichi are both GE Mark I BWR-4's. VY however keeps all of their safety systems and EDGs(Emergency Diesels) inside of the plant, away from the elements unlike Fukushima.
@Phantasm: Don't be an idiot! The Daiichi diesel generators _were_ housed in the plant, not open to the "elements". In fact, if the generators _had_ been outside the plant at a higher elevation, the meltdowns would not have occurred. Daiichi had generator sets at three different elevations, but this was still inadequate to protect them from the tsunami. The VY plant also had their generators in pretty close proximity (eggs in one basket configuration), and one localised fire, explosion, or flood, could've potentially knocked them _all_ out! Nuclear needs to be 'walkaway safe', like proposed LFTR types or similar liquid fuelled reactors. Some other unforeseen disaster could have caused shutdown and loss of backup systems on the VY reactor, as in Japan, and you'd be just as stuffed as they were.

+Sylvia isgod it's not even cheaper. Energy costs rose. Nuclear power is safer and cheaper. Yet environmentalists insist it's dangerous and replace it with fossil fuels. What the fuck
+David Barroso It is a disgusting example of hypocrisy that they cry for green energy which is unreliable, expensive, and unproven, while decrying any new reactor as dangerous. That forces companies to either keep these ancient reactors running, or to use fossil fuels. If the US would just stop being so scared of anything that sounds science-y then maybe we could stop poisoning the planet that keeps us alive.

200 million years will it take for the nuclear to neutralize and even then we’re not sure if that’s true because will have to wait 200 million years to find out who is going to babysit that nuclear waste for 200 million years
My husband worked there just over 20 years and it still breaks our hearts it’s gone.
Is there some kind of international agreement that nuclear power stations must be painted a dismal green and be poorly lit?

truly awesome views of the reactor and even though the sound was iffy in places it's still an exceptional vid.

BC should build lots of nuclear power plants to sell power to the USA.
Just applied for a engineer position at that particular plant. Hopefully she will be able to operate in the future.
very foolish to shut it.
Make it into a homeless shelter maybe?? 😈
It sucks that it closed.

This is the plant that Homer Simpson worked at since the the first showing of the movie “The Simpson’s” occurred in Springfield, Vt.
No it's not dumb dumb. Springfield could be any State. Doh...People used to say that about Maine Yankee too. Just ain't true.

interesting, its good to know they have so many redundant safety systems to keep the reactor and used fuel assemblies in check
