    what bothers me with solarpunk is that most of the content being produced orbiting this concept stem from fashion or other form of esthetic statements with little to no output of tools, assets or anything as tangibly useful as the movement proclaims itself to be.

    • @flash_flood_area
      @flash_flood_area Год назад +95

      That's kind of inevitable and can just be accepted and ignored. Fashion and other aesthetic statements are forms of signaling to others. This is natural for humans to want to do, especially within large populations.
      In its best form, it's an attempt to "find the others" who share your beliefs and values. In its worst form, it is a way of hypocritical virtue signaling, and can also be turned into a commodity by cynical entities.
      Personally, I think it just has to be accepted that some people are going to be hypocritical, and some are cynical. Imho, it's best to just ignore that, and to focus on how fashion and aesthetics can get more people interested in a concept they weren't previously aware of.

      Unfortunately, very few people have those resources at their disposal.

    • @flash_flood_area
      @flash_flood_area Год назад +41

      @@recycledwaste8737 Some of that is happening, fortunately; but, like you say, it requires a lot from those who have the knowledge. Building community can overcome some of that, since those without knowledge can maybe donate or barter, in order to support the efforts of the group.
      I see a lot happening in my own city, actually. Despite the predominant unsustainable infrastructure, some local efforts have even gotten the city government to get on board with sustainable landscaping, better infrastructure for biking and bus riding, etc.
      It's not NEARLY enough, but it shows that attitudes can be shifted, even at the level of municipal government, which usually caters mainly to concepts of "growth" and the interests of big business.

Not "a tree hugger" not a "vegan" not a lot of things, now I have an idea of what may be my world view - sort of "solar powered-locally produced-anti centralist, anti-elitist, anti-dynastic, anti-one-use-anything, anti-throw-away-society, generalist-driven, circular-peraculture" - been wondering how to define it in a way others can relate to.

    I love the concept of Solarpunk, yet i find it to be... Less punk than it needs to be. The anticapitalism of it is beautiful and I've ALWAYS supported that 🤘. But the concept of "Personal Carbon Footprint" idea was literally STARTED by big oil in the 1970's to pass of the blame of its own evils to the consumer. ((You can Google radio/tv commercials of oil companies that started the CFP system in the 70s)). Real change will come from mass government changes, or massive attacks on the largest non-ecofriendly companies funding. Until their money is messed with, or regulations force it, the Capitalist Industrial Systems will not change. LOVE that you included Vote as number 1 because its the only real thing in the entire list that will have a big enough ripple to do anything substantial.

    There is no Solarpunk future without Earthen houses.
    Not only do they fit every goal of the movement they are also a very practical choice for home building
    Compressed Earth Block houses are...
    Fire proof (dirt doesn't burn)
    Pest resistant (mice and roaches can't live in your walls if your walls are solid Earth)
    Cheap (literally dirt cheap)
    Stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. (Just like adobe. This reduces or eliminates carbon that would have been used to heat or cool the house over the hundreds of years these houses last.)
    Super low embodied energy.
    Last forever.
    Please look into it. This is our future we are fighting for.

Also ceb seems a bit less complicated for mixing ingredients but higher on the tools necessary to accomplish the build. I live in Colorado and can not believe that all single family homes aren't adobe or CEB. The native people who lived in this region knew how to build (when they chose to make permanent settlements) they were not made of sticks.

    Personally, i dont understand the zoo point and how it relates to solarpunk. Zoos are literally a capitalist circus in which they capitalize out of taking wild animals and fuel animal trafficking. Animals deserve to be in their natural habitat, and if they need support, i would say actually to search for animal sanctuaries. Some animal sanctuaries are for farm animals, and there are also others that save wild animals from circuses and zoos. An animal sanctuary takes care of their needs and makes a safe space for them, they do not capitalize out of people visiting and such.

    • @TheSolarpunkScene
      @TheSolarpunkScene  Год назад +6

      Hi @lug811! It really does depend on the zoo. Zoos that are associated with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, such as the Toronto Zoo are dedicated to conservation and animal welfare. There's a reason why I made a point of stating to research the zoo and how they treat their animals.
      Zoos, if set up properly with said focus on conservation and welfare, can provide spaces for education and appreciation of nature. With animal sanctuaries, you have to be careful as they are not federally regulated as zoos are. Hence ending up with places like are featured in Tiger King. It really depends on the individual place, and its why it's important to do your research about the location and their ethics.
      Here are some articles talking further on the matter, one from the AZA and one from National Geographic:
      Why Zoos and Aquariums are Beneficial

    Just a note about 4:50 "Romanticization of indigenous culture":
    Many indigenous cultures have/had advanced ecological technologies developed with R&D periods of thousands of years which are being researched now by scientists involved in biomimicry, engineering, biology, chemistry etc... Everyday new research is being published.
    Also, "Globally, the UN recognizes that Indigenous peoples protect 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity and scientists have shown that Indigenous management practices in Brazil, Canada, and Australia provides the same level of ecosystem support and protection as any imposed protected area" Quote from Andrewism "What Does It Mean To Be Indigenous?".
    Today's unsustainable economy that you speak against is very arrogant with it's attitude of - Humanity is above nature and nature is there to serve and be used by it.
    I feel the sentence you said "Romanticization of indigenous culture" can seem suggestive to that same old arrogance.
    (I'm aware that i'm taking what you said out of context when you were talking specifically about AnarchoPrimitivism, but still feel it's important. Also I guess you already knew this, like in your video "How to Make Seed Bombs" you mentioned the old Japanese knowledge.)
    I believe that for Solarpunk to succeed we have to learn a lot from indigenous cultures.
    For example, I would love to see a conversation between Solarpunk activist and Dr. Lyla June regarding traditional land stewardship practices.

That's where voting comes into play. We have limited influence in product consumption that doesn't extend the green washing marketing. One of the reasons is governmental subsdidy of products that are sufferng from "Demand and Supply" (Gas or Milk for example). That's where politics comes in place. Vote.

While I have gotten a lot of people who disagree with the point about zoos, my personal experience and a number of other people's experiences with zoos are places like the Toronto Zoo! Places like that that work for conservancy and introducing endangered species back into the wild. They do a lot of good work, and have a huge focus on providing safe, healthy environments for their creatures. Zoos are often a place for people to be exposed to other living beings that they wouldn't have had a chance otherwise, and can foster a passion for nature in urban environments. There are a lot of shit zoos out there, and it's important that we hold them accountable to improve the conditions that they have for our fellow living beings, or shut them down if it isn't good enough.

    Zoo is really bad, only thing I wasnt really happy with in this vid
    Zoos are in general a very bad place for animals, most of the time the can not be help properly there and the conditions these animals have to face every day are quite frankly disgusting.
    In my opinion, a solarpunk society will get rid of zoos just out of the moral doubtfulness of these places. Be my guest to inform yourself in greater details about that topic, I am unsure about any valid sources in the englisch language, since I only know about scientists and animal-rights activists in germany. But it IS a very big issue

    One point made me stumble though: shouldn't we free ALL living beings from their oppression? Animals in Zoos are cute and fascinating to look at, yeah, but they are most of the time neither native nor are they free. Why not extend the thought of being against oppression to animals?
    Even if Zoos tell people, that the money they make is being used to support projects helping endangered animals etc.; i just don't get, why we have to goggle at animals behind windows, behind bars, behind idk wide bodies of water AND walls, it feels icky.

    I love Solarpunk, but, to be honest, I don't like the suggestions. We won't end capitalism with recycling and buying bamboo toothbrushes. Conspicuous consumption as a way out of the climate crisis is just individualist and a capitalist attempt at reform again. Instead, we need mass movements to protest and to hold decision-makers accountable for their inability to change our economic system towards one that can coexist with our planet. We need to do activism against fossil fuels. Focusing on individual solutions instead of getting organised in a protest movement is contraproductive.

    • @Liliquan
      @Liliquan Год назад +4

      Why is it so hard for people to pay attention?
      The point of Solarpunk is to imagine a future whereby humans can engage with technology to produce sustainable and equitable outcomes.
      It’s opposite of cyberpunk. The suggestions of lifestyle changes are merely some of the suggestions worth considering.
      According to anarchist praxis, in order for a system to be replaced, one needs to create the new within the shell of the old.
      Which means embodying the mentality and behaviors of the world that one strives for.
      It means creating networks, amassing resources, skill building etc. so that when the system collapses (which is inevitable) a new system will already be there to replace it.
      This is in contrast to other typical forms of activism which either try and alter the current system bit by bit (which usually ends up being two steps forward one step back) or trying to take the system down without a care in the world for what happens next.

    What is your position on veganism, ie the way of living that excludes the exploitation and cruelty of animals? The lead researcher (Joseph Poore) of the most comprehensive study ever conducted on the relation between food and climate from Oxford University titled "Reducing food’s environmental impacts through producers and consumers" said going vegan is probably the single best thing you personally can do to reduce your environmental footprint. And this is without taking into account the ethical and justice issues regarding producing sentient beings to exploit and kill of course.

    • @TheSolarpunkScene

      Hi Luis! I will be doing a video in the future discussing meat consumption to fully elaborate on my position on it. I've read over that paper: www.researchgate.net/profile/Joseph-Poore/publication/325532198_Reducing_food's_environmental_impacts_through_producers_and_consumers/links/5dde940ca6fdcc2837f02458/Reducing-foods-environmental-impacts-through-producers-and-consumers.pdf
      To be perfectly blunt, being vegan is not accessible to everyone, often for medical reasons. You have made your stance perfectly clear while asking mine, so all I can say in response is that I hope you keep an eye out for when I do release a video about it. :)

    •  Год назад +1

      @@TheSolarpunkScene hi! Thank you for replying and for checking out the study! 🙂 I'll be sure to keep an eye on that new vid 👍 until then if you have any questions, as you may have guessed, I'm a vegan and environmental activist for more than 5 years now. Just to throw a bit of info out there, all the major nutritional authorities around the world give a green light to vegan diets for all stages of life, including the largest one on earth with more than 100.000 health professionals the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. I don't think I can post URLs like you did above but you can easily find a very short summary of their position by asking "academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position on vegan diets" the summary is really short like just 3 or 4 sentences. I hope you find it useful! Thanks again 🙏

    • @Liliquan
      @Liliquan Год назад +1

      @@TheSolarpunkSceneThat’s just factually not true. If by some freak chance that a vegan diet lack some necessary ingredient that somebody required for their particular condition and that ingredient originated from animal sources then there is likely no reason why it cannot be produced in the lab and taken as temporary supplementation.
      There are cases of those in certain geographical places that lack adequate resources to sustain a vegan diet but in a solarpunk model, there is no reason that should be an issue.

    "Capitalism is a zero-sum system" is exactly the opposite of the truth. Capitalism requires continuous growth of monetary value (although not necessarily material inputs) to provide profits. i.e. if the monetary value of wealth becomes fixed (zero sum), profits can't exist. Production must also grow with population, to maintain living standard parity.

    • @LongDefiant
      @LongDefiant 3 месяца назад

      But if you pay the worker less, the owner gets more, right?

    • @crawkn
      @crawkn 3 месяца назад

      @@LongDefiant That may be true in the short term, although not necessarily. As a general rule, better paid employees are also more productive, because the labor market is the same as any market in that you get what you pay for. Capitalism, when it is well regulated and optimized, functions on the principle of mutual benefit. Exploitative interactions may result in short-term gain for one party, but compromise the ability of the other party to continue to participate in the market. Employees also function as consumers of products, whether directly or indirectly. The purpose of economic activity is to provide for the needs and wants of the population, and the size of the economy ("the pie") depends on the ability of every participant to acquire those needs and wants sustainably.
      The inefficiency of the economy in achieving that purpose is compromised by the tragedy of the commons. What may benefit one at the expense of the other is also at the expense of the system as a whole, which cannot be optimized while such imbalances are allowed to persist. Violations of mutually beneficial exchange limit the viability of the economy. However this is not a feature unique to capitalism, it is a feature of human interaction. In communist systems, exploitation occurs by a different means, primarily official corruption, but the results are evident in the system's failure to provide consumer products abundantly.
      As a generality, purist systems, whether unregulated laisez-faire capitalism, or communism which prohibits property rights and profit, fail to achieve production adequate to the needs of the population. Addressing externalities is an inherently long-term common benefit, with short-term costs. Only hybrid systems, actively managed, have potential to achieve optimal benefit to humankind.

    - researching where your meat comes from
