  • Connecting to led strips can be a tricky process if you are new to installing led tape. We compare making led connections by soldering or using quick-fit connectors.
    Each type of led strip connection method has advantages depending upon the application.
    00:00 Introduction - types of connection
    00:50 Soldering method
    02:08 Soldering process - tinning connection on the LED strip
    02:25 Tinning the connection wires to the LED strip
    03:15 Connecting wires to LED strip
    04:24 Using ferrules instead of tinning the connection wires
    06:28 Quick connector method
    07:00 Inserting LED strip to IDC connector
    10:20 Powering up the LED strip

    Cor, I haven't soldered since I was in my first year of college many moons ago. Back to basics I think before I try doing it on led tape. I've always been taught to do things the old way to keep up the skills so they're second nature. The nice and easy ways are a bonus and they're coming thick and fast in many areas

    Ive made 1000s of led strips for different company’s made to order. Bit like Osram project service and Aurora’s cut service Top tip would be kept the led as flat as possible and set a weigh (something with soft bottom to keep any damage to led ) on it to keep in still when soldering the ends .
    And heat shrink once finished, sometime the solder with bleed through if the it holes in the tape which creates a short of the tape is stuck to aluminium profile.
    As most company’s recommend aluminium profile for heat transfer of the tape.
    Also if using extra glue to stick up led under cupboard where it can’t stick just that well on it’s own. Only use non corrosive adhesives as others will eat into the strip and solder and start to break it down over time.
    Get Gary to try a solder a 2.5 5 core on the some RGBW that’s test him

    Just did a job that involved fitting multiple 12V LED strips on a narrowboat. Wish I'd known about IDC connectors beforehand, they look a lot neater and seem harder to mess up. How do they work with waterproof LED strips that have the clear soft plastic coating? Will the IDCs punch through the coating or do you still need to strip it back?

      OSRAM gave a special version for IDC connection of IP rated strips.

    Useful overview and tips. While personally preferring to solder this sort of connection I am interested in giving these idc connectors a shot - neither of your current links take me directly there and searching takes me down the usual rabbit holes. Can you provide a direct link to a suitable idc for led tape please?

    I've got LED strip lights with pre-soldered 100mm wires. I need to extend this wire and connect to some 0.75mm flex. Can you recommend a slim profile butt connector that I can join the wires without soldering? I fit both red and black wires through a 12mm hole - so need two thin connectors, or one double-butt connector. I tried a Wago 221 but it didn't quite fit through. Thanks!

    • @efixx
      @efixx  4 года назад

      Can you not just use red butt crimps?

    • @user-ky9py9oi7d
      @user-ky9py9oi7d 4 года назад

      @@efixx Thanks, just looked those up. Presumably I'll need a crimping tool to use them, which I can get, but is there much risk of the crimp failing? Future access will be constrained by a glued, wall flush piece of wood. Many thanks for the reply.

    We use the aurora tape and plug connectors but put a blob of solder on the plug terminals still, as trying to solder loose singles onto the tape is a nightmare! you have to have 3 hands 😂

    Surprised that IDC is considered unreliable as you said Comms went over to IDC years ago although I would solder as I have been doing it for 60 yrs. If you tin cable first you know iron is ready before risking on the thin tape. Noticed you let ferrule move whilst solder cooling, that is a risky joint so “sparkys” stay IDC.

    When I solder the wires on ,I then slip a bit or heat shrink sleeving over the joint . Just think it looks more professional and when it’s shrunk it’s a much stronger joint

    Not wishing to get all nanny state on you, but when you're demonstrating soldering put some eye shields on, you could see 3:49 bits of solder flying off.

      Depends upon your own risk assessment. In all the electronics assembly areas I’ve worked in glasses aren’t used. The fumes from the flux is a much bigger risk for longer term exposure. *Gordon
