What Israeli Survivors Believe Now | NYT Opinion

  • After Hamas attacked their country this month, many Israelis fled to hotels, where they sought some version of safety. There, they’ve been processing their trauma as they move from that harrowing morning into a new world. In the Opinion video above, filmed in the days after the attack, survivors reflect on what they lost, who they blame and what’s next - for them and for Israel.
Despite being at war, polling from the Israel Democracy Institute suggests that Israelis are more optimistic about the future of their country now than they’ve been at any other point this year. Still, for the residents of Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where more than 100 Israelis were killed, any optimism they had before the attack has been replaced by an uncertain future. Here, Israelis grapple with what can be recovered - and what is lost forever. That includes a fundamental loss of faith in a defense system that didn’t work. As one asked of her government, “Why didn’t you protect me?”

What happened on Oct 7 was a tragedy. But it must be said. How quickly these survivers 'lost empathy' for Palestinians, how quickly they can no longer 'trust' the other side, how quickly they no longer see the 'human being' in Palestinians, how quickly they now look at dying mothers and children in Gaza and now 'feel no empathy'. After ONE incident. Now multiply that by the THOUSANDS of incidents the Palestinians have witnessed in their lives. The open air prison of Gaza. The IDF massacre of 250+ Palestinians in the peaceful right to return protests, laughing as they recorded shooting kids, the arson attack by Israeli settlers that burnt an 18 month old baby to death and then the settlers celebrated his death and chanted 'ali is on a grill'. The apartheid state in the West Bank. The IDF killing of Palestinain journalist Shireen which they took the blame for 4 months later and tried to drop her coffin, the violent displacement of Palestinians in Sheikh jarrah, the uprooting of olive trees in Palestinian farm and the list goes on and on for 70 YEARS. And today 3400 children killed by the IDF in Gaza in 23 DAYS. After all this do you not think the Palestinians have lost empathy?? Would a child whose mother was shot and killed, a mother whose baby was burnt, a sister whose brother was killed, are they supposed to continue to have empathy? These survivors after living off the profits of the Israeli state who perpetuated the crimes against Palestinians have now lost empathy? How quickly they lose their humanity but the Palestinians must be peaceful they must stay quiet they cannot lose humanity? What is this double standard, what world are we living in?

It is corrupt and self-interested just like other Western governments, but it ultimately wants to satisfy its people (and it has to try, since it's a liberal democracy). Hamas truly doesn't care for its people. In fact, it says outright that the highest goal of its people is to die for their cause and they love it when that happens. Don't try to equate the two sides.

Thank you Hassan for your kind words.🙏❤ I'm an Israeli leftist, and I've had feelings of guilt and shame because of the innocent Palestinians, including woman and children who died in our bombardments. I also cried when I saw a 9-year-old Palestinian boy whose father died, crying: "I wish it was me instead of you!". It's frightening and awful what the Palestinians in Gaza are going through. And what happens to children at war is really hard to bear, too hard for me to watch.
Since October 7th I've been feeling like we're all being manipulated by Iran's evil master plan to turn us all against one another, and make us fight harder than ever before. Whether it's on this war cycle, or the next one...
Iran's plans will lead to a lot of destruction in Gaza, Israel and Lebanon. Their ultimate goal is that the Iranian regime will be the last one standing. I hope they fail in turning this conflict into a religious war with the Jews and the west.
Maybe the Americans will help us, cause they are still trying to bring a new peace deal with Saudi Arabia, with the Palestinians being part of the deal.
Although it's hard to be optimistic right now, with Netanyahu and the extreme right wing elements in his government.
Many years ago (I'm 50 now), leftists were the majority and we did our best to push forward a peaceful solution. But because the "moderates" on both sides failed to compromise on a peace deal, the right wingers and religious nationalists have become the majority and came into power. That has brought us to where we are today. Hope we all stay safe and live to see more peaceful times.🙏

Nearly all Palestinians are true unarmed civilians and 60% of them are children.
But TBH, what is an "Israeli civilian" exactly? Explain to me. Besides children and a handful of exempted people, are they really civilians (like the Palestinians) if they've been all mandated to serve at least 2 years in the occupied territories and actively committed violence and oppression on real civilians including children, disabled ppl and the elderly?
Also, I notice they never mention anywhere that those "lovely" kibbutz like Ashkelon that were attacked on Oct 7 were actually all still Palestinian towns quite recently. And a LOT of today's population in Gaza are impoverished refugee families that were forced out of their homes to build these Israeli towns.
Many have also families in the Westbank who are tortured and killed by armed settlers and soldiers everyday.
When we want to be accurate and honest in our reasoning approach, context is key.

    • @dooley8746
      @dooley8746 6 месяцев назад +2

The vast majority of the Israeli military serve at desk jobs having to do with building Israeli infrastructure. They are certainly not mandated to serve in Palestine, most work in the city they live in already. Very very few have ever served in a combat role or ever seen Palestine.
Most of the Negev was uninhabited prior to the partition. Just scanning a list of the attacked kibbutz, most aren't former towns at all, they are actually brand new towns or brand new suburbs of towns(as is the case of the Ashkelon kibbutz) and are built on previously undeveloped desert land. There are Israelis and Gazans that are blood relatives, and these kibbutz were literally built so that the Israeli power grid would eventually approach Gaza's border so that Gaza could one day tap in. Their nearby existence cropping up is actually how Gaza was able to finally be wired for electricity, as Palestinian leaders had never attempted to provide electricity to the strip ever before. Instead it was Israel who took compassion on them and gave Gazans permission to tap into the Israeli power grid from a nearby kibbutz that didn't even exist before the partition. For that kindness Israel is now accused of being in total control of Gaza's power supply. It's kind of crazy to take such an expensive, deliberate labor of love and turn it against the Israelis.

@@AndrewMalone_ I grew up in Gaza, it is absolutely the truth. Business minded relatives of Gazan citizens that lived in Israel handled most of it privately, without help from the government at first. Negotiating beforehand with the Bedouins on where they could build new kibbutz without being an imposition on the Bedouins, and also with the promise that Bedouins would also get to tap into the electricity once the developments were built, a literal line of kibbutz were built one by one until finally the line went far enough south towards Gaza and Bedouin territory to connect them. Once the original agreement was made with the Bedouins, land was purchased and one kibbutz at a time was built, one kibbutz would then finance the next kibbutz to be built. It was only once the line of kibbutz finally reached close enough that permission from Israel to connect Gaza to the grid was asked for. It was literally a labor of love, as blood ties were the inspiration for the plan. It was much easier to ask for help with electricity for Gazans this way than back when Gaza was far away from the Israeli population mass.

The people in this video are grieving and anger is a part of that grief. It can be pretty hard to feel empathy when feeling that kind of anger. However, none of them said that they feel like the civilians in Gaza deserve what is happening to them nor are they justifying the violence in Gaza.

They don’t trust the government and they don’t trust there could be a path for peace. These are the people who went through this traumatic ordeal. Can that be acknowledged first without interjecting a “what about?” You don’t sound like you have too much empathy yourself if you are watching a video of people who lost all they had in a few hours and expect them to overcome their grief and switch into freedom fighters mode. That the Israeli government is too heavy handed in Gaza and that the Palestinian people do not deserve to be killed in great numbers for this attack or that they deserve political agency and to live free--all that I agree with. In 2023 up to October on average 1 Palestinian was killed every day including more than 1 Palestinian child killed every week. Since 2008 over 6,000 Palestinians have been killed before this current war. While these numbers are not the result of a major attack it leaves Palestinians with the knowledge that they have no security at anytime and I wonder how many Israeli citizen's are aware of the price paid so they could feel secure up to now.

If is is understanable that they do not want to feel empathy for palestinians or that they see them now as bad people after the 7.oct,
can you understand groups like Hamas now ?? Will you show them now understanding ??

I can understand that millions of Palestinians have had similar thoughts - knowing that they have neighbors across the wall, all of whom are human and most are good people, yet with a government full of hate and violence.
What I don't understand is people here in the USA who empathize with only people on the Israeli side. I hope the nytimes does a similar video from Gaza and the West Bank and links them to show how there are full-fledged humans with complex emotions on both sides of the occupation.

Hamas explicitly says they will only accept a scenario where Israel and Israelis are completely wiped from the Earth and its nothing but an Islamic state "from the river to the sea". Many do not want peace, they only want to destroy Israel and Israelis. BTW, Gaza had not been occupied in over 20 years. It's been self-governed, with a 100% Palestinian population, with no Israeli presence and therefore no ethnic cleansing or apartheid or occupation. What noble reason did they have for the massacre again? Yes, they couldn't freely enter Israel for security reasons, but shortly before the attack there were actually more work visas for Gazans than ever before, which enabled Gazans to work in Israel and the West Bank. Things were normalizing. Then Hamas brutally murdered 1,300 innocent Israelis. They did it only out of anti-semitism, not to help the people of Gaza. Obviously Hamas knew what kind of response Israel would have. Hamas also hides in crowded areas. They wanted this.

NYT, what is it with these selective reports? If you want to do something like that try posting a video in the same conditions with ADULT survivors from the other side, talking about DEATH as they do here and not only purposefully focusing on DISPLACEMENT while not mentioning the number of Palestinian 'casualties' in these last three weeks (for context, watch the other video they posted). This is a long way from the ethos of your visual investigations, years ago.
We're talking about 830 families completely wiped out from the face of the earth in the enclosed space they were relegated to. In three weeks, Palestinians have suffered 9000 deaths, and you decide not to include that number in the other video but write that 1200 Israelis have died since the BEGINNING of the conflict: that is not an 'opinion' piece, it is inteantionally misleading. You're interviewing people who objectively are sitting down in well put, relatively rich, housing. Compare that to the bombed areas in Gaza, and to the barely habitable conditions of living in there.
You're an important news organization. To what purpose are you showing one-sided suffering? If it had been to shed a light on marginalized suffering in this geographic area, then you chose the side that has been most heavily represented by the media not only in the last few days, but decades, in that territory.

Also, the cross-interview narrative sounds less grim if you don't put a single clip of a person crying and let the suffering be seen through a kid's eyes. Compare that to the israelian adults and the story about the dead, talking about loss of empathy for the other side and asking for an even harsher escalation while feeling their government betrayed them by not acting quicker. Why did the NYT not focus on talking about the deaths in both videos? Why are there not adults talking in both? You barely see a shot or two of the rubble, and we know how the houses of the Palestinians look compared to the ones we got in the Israeli's p.o.v.
