Thanks you my brother for creating this video, I have been advocating for Kunta kinteh Island to be renovated almost 8 years back for the future generations but the government has ignored it together with the Tourism Minister. Gambia Tourism is dying 😭 every day, our Tourism Minister has failed us. If you visit Abouko nature reserves and other tourists attractions area you will feel like crying 😢. Gambia are losing 📉 it's tourists to Senegal 🇸🇳 who are coming up with new things, so innovative. We need a Tourism Minister who is so innovative 💡, has the vision and ready to rebuild our Tourism sector. Gambia is a friendly country who love Tourists compared to others countries, we are the smiling coast of Africa but today its sad to see how things are getting from bad to worse.

Well done to you 👏🏽 👍🏽 it's not easy when more passionate about something and those who can help (government) seem to ignore, it makes one feel their cries are falling on deaf ears, but please don't give up. Uou probably done this many times already but if not, is it possible to hold a public meeting 🤔 invite government officials, environmentalists, diasporans and investors and bring the attention to all the Gambian community, let's see what we can do, what events we can hold to raise money alongside government funding. I'm not in Gambia yet but planning to be in next couple years. I think if Gano can do a funding campaign, I'm sure many of his followers will contribute. Just a suggestion 🙏🏽

@Gano Did It Yes Gano, I see many youtubers, raising money for Schools, Books, Orphanage, Bore holes, why not the biggest campaign Gambia has ever seen 'Save Kunta Kinte Island' I think the first thing is to have this consultation with officials, diasporans, investors and those men in the video as I mentioned before. We need engineers, construction companies etc. What we need is to A. find out what can realistically be done, what is possible. B. What sort of cost would we be looking at to make this happen. C. Persuasion (get the government on side) and consult for them to fund at least half of the cost or more. Then at least we'll have an idea of what funding needs to be raised by absolutely anyone that feels it's a worthwhile cause to give willingly. I'm 100% sure if that Island can be saved, fixed up and the village modernised, gift shops, restaurants, homes fixed up, it will no doubt bring more tourists. This can only enhance the economy as a whole which will be a great thing for the Gambia 🇬🇲

This is such a good documentary that all African Americans in particular should really take interest in. With the need for our history to be preserved, it is alarming to me as to why influential and wealthy black people in the US are not coming together to try and save this important part of history. When Roots first aired on television back in the 1970s, it captivated the country like no other tv program in history. I pray to Allah SWT that those with the ability to do so will see the rewards that can come from investing in the preservation of this landmark so that our children and those who will be on this earth in the future will have everlasting memories and history of we African people and descendants, whether good or bad. We must stop letting our history be tarnished and destroyed forever. Ameen. Excellent work Gano. You deserve an award for this showcase bro.

The site must be preserved. It should be a priority area. There should be collaboration between the communities of these sites and the Gambia government to revive these historic places. Not to give modern looks but to maintain their historical identities, add some lodges, museums , market places, connecting with other sites as the local men in the video have outlined. The community should have local fund management boards for the development of the local communities (schools, hospitals etc). I think the Juffureh brand has potential to negotiate with department of tourism to initiate projects. We Gambians should be all in

To be honest, I feel bad and guilty that I never visited Jufure whilst I was living in Gambia, but I think this documentary is a wake up call for us Gambians in particular and Africans in General to visit our key historical sites such as Jufure. Going forward, it is too pathetic to see that the ministry of Tourism and the Gambia government as a whole are not doing enough to preserve this great historical place. Reviving this island will help preserve its history for many years to come and as well provide sources of income for the inhabitants in particular. We must always narrate our own history, for it awakens our inner consciousness as Africans. Once again, thank you Gano and the entire Jufure movement.

Get real: Juffureh and the fake story of Kunta Kinteh do not attract sufficient tourists. People outside already know for long that it’s just a story, made up in the US, to enrich a novel writer. Give up on it! Gambia has so many other things to offer to tourists, but we focus on the wrong stuff, and we want the Government to invest in a lost cause. Gambia’s richness is its paradise beaches, its wildlife, tourist tracks,… moreover, tourists are mainly European, they have no interest in an island with a fake story. Develop Gambia, do it right!!!!

I'm confused by this too. It's widely documented Kunta Kinteh is a fictional character, so why are tour guides bringing tourists to the alleged home where he was born?? Feels a bit misleading to me. Even naming the island (which is an incredibly moving sight) is a strange decision.

Indeed It was overwhelming to see the island corroding and disappearing into the sea, the government should be a shamed of themselves. Why are they not seeing the importance of saving this historic 🏝 island. Gambians need to shout louder so these people in office (government) pay attention and listen. Is there a Kunta Kintè day to honour his legacy? Is there a Campaign to save the island? If not why not? The government needs to see this documentary in the hope they get off their lazy ass and do something. Kunta Kintè is the biggest tourist legendary history and destination. I visited the museum and the Island in February first time. I have seen the movie “Roots” on TV in my childhood in Germany… it was so interesting and horrible to learn about slavery in Africa and US… but at that time it was at least a series Movie.. a story… and in the early seventies we hardly see a black person in our environment! But later I was interested.. reading the book.. especially after my first visit in Gambia. So I was interested to watch the place where Kunta Kanteh supposed to lived and catched. Unfortunately to travel to this place is really annoying… going to Banjul.. going on the ferry and later by car to Albreda and so on… as a tourist it is a long journey without good facilities ( toilets are always a horrible… if you will find one… no good restaurants or little Coffee shops…) at least we need a long complete day to visit this place… but only stay there for about 2 hours!! And very sad that this video had to make by an entrepreneur with good intentions but at least, of course it is also a commercial video for his company …. These clothes are nice, and a good idea! I wish them good progress. Perhaps he could help these poor women who are living in Albreda / Juffure and surroundings to work for him? Weaving or sewing…. Selling these shirts to tourists?

I totally disagree, and we are of course all entitled to our opinions. Even in the UK we have buildings that will never be demolished, they are called 'listed buildings' they are keep them due to their history.
Yes we must also focus on current modern day slavery and controlling tactics, but please we must honour our ancestors and not wipe them away from history. Their stories and the conditions they have endured is of utmost importance to many of us (I for one) needed to see and feel the surroundings of that awful dungeon to get some REAL understanding of the suffering they endured for me.

History is part of our humanity most especially Gambians. We should not be ashamed of our history but embrace and preserve it, albeit, it's part of our past hence should be the fundamental integral part of our future. "A nation without history is like a tree without roots", so we should maintain and nurture our roots and not destroy it. Knowing oneself will help in our self determination, liberation and unchained ourselves from mental captivity. This is one of our setbacks as Gambians, not fully understand ourselves through the historical lenses. This lack of self awareness has infiltrated our leaders and leadership trickling down to the ordinary citizens, that's the sole reason we are fighting against who we truly are by neglecting these historical sites. Infrastructure building, capacity building and national investments are part of any governments' fixed capital asset formation that would lead to self sustainability and more so give us hope as Gambians for a brighter future. Gambians should wake up and start educating themselves and not wait for our government that have no idea of national portfolio building and mitigating economic instability. Education is all around us, this is the technological age. So let's wake up and be the drivers of our own countries future. "If you want to liberate a nation, make them understand who they truly are through historical timeline but if you want to destroy a nation then conceal or take away their history"! Our leaders are destroying us with their profligate policies either consciously or unconsciously and this affect their own progressiveness as well. Thanks @ Gano did it.
