Beach Boys ~ She Knows Me Too Well: Production analysis/walkthrough

  • This is about as simple as a Brian Wilson production got for many years during the peak of his creativity. And while it is a very simple, minimal production, I love the self-contained unit of just the Boys (and writing friend Russ Titelman on mic-stand percussion.). There is something pure and honest about these productions.
    This is not a squeaky clean production, it's very noisy and hissy, with the instruments driven hard by the classic Bill Putnam preamps, and unusually for this time, some instruments heavily compressed. It makes for a hard-hitting mono track, a sort of punk wall-of-sound. Quite a contrast from the major production coming up next, "In the Back of My Mind".

    Great as always Joshilyn. I've always thought the minimal tracking on this really highlighted the complex vocal work, much as Smiley Smile did a few years later. His minimalist approach vs the full blown productions are to me like the Branderburgs vs the Well Tempered Clavier. Both approaches give an insight into an astonishing musical mind. Thanks again for taking the time to do these videos. They have been most welcome during the lockdown.

    A lot of bouncing down no doubt on a ton of Beach Boys mixes. They got so muddy as time went on, and creativity soared. Us Beach Boys fans need all these albums re-released and sounding beautiful.

    Carl indeed did go DI, the strings on the guitar sound clean. You can hear all the nuances in it. It reminds me of the clean six string sound he would get on Then I Kissed Her.

    Great video! After watching your video it got me thinking that maybe Brian was trying to produce the track like he did Don’t Worry Baby, since he has such great success with that. Both songs are ballads, but played about as fast as you could and still call it a ballad. The choruses have the pretty falsetto melody, the background stack, and the slightly rhythmically different bass line, and all parts sing the words and not oohs and aahs. To me, Dennis did not keep good time. I know some people love his drumming...but at least in 64/65, it’s, well, pretty bad. I was thinking about that because you sequenced the snare fill and didn’t rush it. (Unlike Dennis) :) I can’t wait for In The Back of My Mind. I just love the way Brian hides “treasures” in the horn/string parts. Makes me so thankful for the bootlegs :)

    Since I try to accurately record Beach Boys songs on my channel, I enjoy watching your videos. One thing that I would suggest is that you first play your entire version of a song, and then go back and describe what you've done, and why.

      @@joshilynhoisington There are a couple of reasons. The main one is that hearing the whole thing first helps determine whether it's worthwhile to go back through the whole thing in detail.
      I feel the same thing about instructional guitar videos. I like to see how the player plays the whole song before watching them go through the process of teaching it.

    The guitar doesn't really sound like DI to me since you can hear the strumming pretty loudly, but then again what do I know about playing the guitar? haha Just my observation. Anyway, this was another great video. I think I'll upload a remastered instrumental mix of this so everyone can hear the original track.

    What plugin did you use to get the western studio recorded drums? What's it exactly called? Could you send a link?

      @@AudioPortalAudiobooks Well, keep watching! The Western Drums are from EastWest's Play drums. And I use EastWest's reverb plugins (which are sort of quirky...) for their models of the Western chambers and rooms. I use the Universal Audio UA 610-A preamps on pretty much every input, and I often use Amplitube 4 and 5 for guitar stuff. I plan to do a much more detailed rundown of my recording and mixing process pretty soon.

So that's most of the things you use to get the Beach Boys sound? That's all I really want to be able to do. It would be amazing if you could make a "How to get the Beach Boys sound" video. Would be my favorite video of all time literally this is amazing. I always wished I was around back in the day when Western was up and running. These sounds are so much better to me than modern music.

      Do you think using the UA 610 alone will still give a beach boy sound if I play around with it in the right way? Or are the other plugins necessary? Thanks again

      @@AudioPortalAudiobooks I would say that it's less any one plug-in as it is a cumulative effect of lots of different factors. Every step in the chain has to be considered and dealt with in the right way. It's much more about using the right thing at the right point than the specific plug in. So if you think of one instrument on a track, say an electric guitar plugged into an amp, you have to consider all of the following points in the electronic signal chain. So, are the pick-ups on the guitar the right pickups? Are you using the right amp or the right amp simulator? If you're using the right amp simulator, do you know how to gain stage it and set it up to sound right? Then, that input goes into a mic that goes into the board, so you put the UA 610-A or some other tube amp emulator in then. Western's boards in 1965-66 were three track, so there were three busses and three reverb send busses--each of those would have some kind of circuitry driving them, so you'd want a buss emulator on those, or even another UA 610. If there was EQ or compression (which often there wasn't) you'd add it after the buss stage. Then it hit tape--so you might put a tape emulator in the signal at that point. But let's not forget, the guitar amp was in a studio live room, and other mics would have picked up some bleed from that speaker, and likewise, the guitar amp's mic would have picked up other instruments. So you'll need a series of room emulations as well.
      I promise I will go over it all in a forthcoming video.
