    Whoever gives you these recommendations is hitting all the right spots, man, seriously. That's a hell of a track right there. Leviathan is a big name in black metal underground scene, pretty much from the very beginning of rough and extremely prolific demo times all the way to less frequent but always entirely unique and carefully created LPs. This band, or should I say, one-man-band, is all over the place, for all the right reasons.

      @@CriticalReactions Indeed, one dude, and his work is a crazy ride all the way through. Fun fact - the 4th LP - "Massive Conspiracy Against All Life" (called "Perverse Calculus" then) was originally supposed to be the released under the name of his second, also solo, project - Lurker of Chalice, however there was some copyright issues that prohibited him from doing so. As for the Lurker of Chalice, despite the much less prolific discography in comparison to Leviathan, is still worth checking out, the self-titled debut LP from 2005 is probably some of the most haunting and dark material I've heard on a black metal album, definitely does not have that "positive" bright side you often mention as it is deeply atmospheric and dreading all the way through, it also incorporates a lot of dark ambient without which the record would definitely lose a ton of character. Again, worth checking out if you're looking into diving deeper into Wrest's (leader of Leviathan/LoC) work!

    Playful is a good word to describe leviathan oddly enough, despite how dark it can get. He really uses every element to its fullest and never puts too much on you at once. It's awesome you brought up the drag effect thing he does. I've heard it in other tunes as well. The guy is a master so I think it's intentional haha but who knows.

    Also, the reason why people are not letting you stop reacting to black metal is because you're almost the only channel reacting and analyzing black metal the way you do :) most importantly, underground and some more obscure black metal, as most of the time even if some channels react to black metal it's either the most known bands or sub-genres of black metal that are not necessarily representative of black metal as it is. Bands like Leviathan or Akhlys, even Darkthrone? Yeah good luck finding anyone else reacting to this on YT ;) Combine that with a great video format and open minded approach of the host and you have found yourself in an inescapable rabbit hole.

      This track is incredibly sloppy imo and I have no idea what things such as “diadds” or whatever.
      Black metal’s heart is within these darker/oppressive l and satanic themes and sounds…

      @@jefwhitehead4301 Yup, I'm slowly coming around to figuring out what makes BM, well...black metal. I've found some neat ideas on the outskirts but vanilla (-adjacent) black metal still isn't my cup of tea. It's wild that this is one person though. Love finding people who are that passionate about music that they just learn everything the need to get that sound out of their head.
      As for dyads -- it's simply a two note chord. Di- being two (though they use a 'y', who knows why) where triads would be a three note chord. And just in case, a chord is just a group of notes played at the same time.

    Just a note on the lyrics: Jef Whitehead really doesn’t put much emphasis on the lyrics beyond the tone of his voice and the emotion he’s expressing in specific word choices. He refers to his own lyrics as a word salad and jokingly makes fun of them saying “I’m definitely not a poet”, they’re more supposed to be mood pieces and suggest ideas or associations than mean anything literally

    If you're interested in checking something more melodic and less aggressive BM can offer with better production, I'd suggest Sombres Forêts - La mort du soleil.
    It's a different subgenre called depressive/suicidal BM and it's how I personally got into BM as a kid, it's more accessible because of its melodiousness and aesthetics. But this particular record has a very HQ production, stunning soundscapes, occasional keyboards and heartbreaking vocals. Also the frontman plays guitar with a bow, which adds a lot of ephemerality 🖤

    Awesome stuff. Another new BM band I'm going to have to download their entire discography. It's funny... I always used to think myself more of a DM fan who had a handful of BM artists I loved... but these days I think it's more the reverse! Especially in the wake of all these proggy, avant-garde bands influenced by Deathspell Omega. So heartening to see a genre that was once basically metal's version of punk music take such a turn towards complexity. This in particular mixes in that avant-garde, proggy, dissonant style with a helping of good old-fashioned "black n' roll" riffs that give it an old school feel. Just a real treat, and I can't wait to hear the rest of their stuff.

  • @matt_4249

    I wonder if you're just starting to develop an ear for black metal. My main reason for thinking this is that there have been black metal songs in the past where you said it was kind of the same thing the whole time, but I heard different sections. I know when I first tried black metal, the really speedy blast beat sections sounded like an incomprehensible wall of noise and I wasn't into it. I also didn't like how deep the vocals were buried in the mix because I was a big fan of screaming and I couldn't really hear it. The songs I enjoyed were the one's with slower doomy-type riffs like The Hordes of Nebulah by Darkthrone. Over time, as I listened to more of it, I became able to hear the nuances though and the vocals became easier to hear - not understand, mind you. I don't think even veterans can actually understand the words in real time aside from a few here and there if the vocals are distorted enough, but that doesn't bother me. Anyway, not saying this is what's happening for you, just offering it up as a possibility.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  2 года назад +1

      It's possible, and maybe it's happened so gradually I never really noticed it. Regardless, this song (and a few of the recent BM tracks) have all had clear structure to me. But you're right, I did originally say that similar music to this sounded very samey from start to finish. I've been chalking it up people finding songs with clearer production but maybe it's me he is changing. :)

But he's got a few classics under his belt. Him, along with Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega are the faces of the dissonant / avant-garde black metal sound that'd also inspire bands in the Tech Death scene for example.
