    This series is fantastic. Thank you! In just a few days I have gone from knowing nothing about KiCad 5.0.2, to making fabrication-ready PCB designs. I am using Debain GNU/Linux 10 "Buster". I can learn something new in the video, pause it, try it out in KiCad, then resume the video. I have never learned something this complicated in such a short period of time. You are an excellent Instructor. Well done!

    John, thank you for such an awesome series! The content is great, the audio quality superb, and the narration could not be better. I would not be surprised to hear that you are/were a professional broadcaster, though not sure why a broadcaster would have the tech knowledge you possess :). I haven't done any (hobbyist) board design in over 30 years. Had the need recently, and with the abundance of cheap places to get boards done, it's definitely time for me to get back into it. A quick Google search for the best free programs led me to KiCad, and a RUclips search led me here. Everything I could possibly need to learn KiCad was right here. Great series! Again, thank you!

    Nice and very helpful intro to the new KiCad. Question: Why is there a directory called "2043-example.pro" inside a directory of the same name? I'm confused by that.

    • @JohnsBasement
      @JohnsBasement  5 лет назад +1

      Well, technically the are not the same. The directory is 2043-example and the project file inside that directory is called 2043-example.pro.
      Even so, the two are essentially the same because that is the default for how KiCad names them unless you override it by NOT selecting the 'create directory' option when you create the project.
      It makes sense for them all to be similarly named because a project is a set of files containing your project definitions, schematic(s) and PCB files. Each of the files represents a different aspect of the same thing.
      In more advanced (multi-sheet) projects, there will be more files representing the other sheets. When you generate gerber files for a PCB manufacturer there will be even more files. I think of that top level directory as the thing that represents the project and all of its files. The files and other directories that are in that top directory are then the parts of the project (and yes some have somewhat rendundant-looking names by default.)
      Note that you can create a directory of any name and create a project within that directory if you want. Or you can create as I did and then rename the directory afterwards to whatever you want. I do NOT recommend renaming the .pro, .sch, and other files within that project directory that KiCad generates for you. Even if it APPEARS to work, it may not continue to do so over time as you upgrade KiCad versions.

      This is a very broad question. Can you narrow it down to, maybe, the types of components? And maybe the criteria most important to you?

    • @JohnsBasement

      These are some good questions!
      As for clearance, I'd need to know more about the context of your question. Are you talking about courtyards? DRC rules related to them?
      As for the 3D models, I regret that I do not have the experience to give them a respectable answer. I know of things like the discussion here: forum.kicad.info/t/i-created-a-new-kicad3dmodels-library/5151

    • @pettypavlow8330

       @John's Basement I will give shout on that link.
      There are too many clearance inputs between pads routes or even edges. I would like to know which one which. Where do we change them all?
      In your last video, you said "I don't do any etching" did you tried any CNC milling device? I may buy a new device. Can you recommend one? Should I try a cheap Chinese device and milling with wet (Water) milling in order to get better route tracks? Thank you, I appreciate a lot.

    • @JohnsBasement
      @JohnsBasement  2 года назад +1

      The main way to manage net clearances is in the PCB editor's BoardSetup->DesignRules->NetCLasses panel. You can create new net classes and set their sizes and clearances in there. I have yet to figure out if/how to create/override a set of clearance rules on a per-footprint basis (like I can with Altium.) Let me know if I overlooked that somewhere!
      The board edge clearance is a combination of the track (or polygon) clearance and the thickness of the lines that you draw on the edge-cuts layer. I discuss that in here: ruclips.net/video/X86HUpOr_g8/видео.html
      I've never tried CNC board milling. It seems promising for 1- and 2-layer boards. But I have been doing mostly 4-layer boards these days with 6-mil traces & clearances... so I have yet to get any experience with the CNC method.
      This is the first I have heard of water milling a PCB. Please post a blog of your experiences with these things!

    • @dainiusmazuika3364
      @dainiusmazuika3364 2 года назад

      @@JohnsBasement , by saying "redo all these videos", I meant that directly 😁. I took two days off, and watched your v5 playlist till the end. No more help ever needed afterwards. I wish newcomers to v6 would have such intence lecture like this playlist. I will try to watch your videos at high rate again and make a keynotes, but would not bet I will.. as I remember, the types of labels, common hotkeys, multisheet design, erc - drc, working with libraries, adding digikey library was the point of highest value (not many changes in v6, really). One video (the first) would be on how to migrate from v5 to v6 (env var changes, paths to 3d models..).
      Are you already using v6 (just curious)?
      On the other hand, there exists a yearly release policy from the release of v6.0, and v7.0 is planned in January of 2023, so half a year is left for v6.0 existence...

    Good evening, John.
    I am a newbie in terms of KiCAD and even more running it for the very first time. I THINK the installation went well, although I doubt I missed a few tips on how to get it to work.
    To put you in context, I am running the OS X platform (10.12.6) and it seems I have no libraries installed at all. I just don't see how I can draw a schematic diagram if I don't have parts. Can you please give me a starting point so I can get started? Hint: When I click on the Symbol Icon, my cursor does not change (no pen) and as soon as I click on the page, a pop-up windows appears and the title says .. « Chose Symbol (0 items loaded) » !!

      Hopefully there are some OSX people that can chime in here?
      From this, however, I suspect you installed only the cad package & not any libraries. They are separate things. Go back to the downloads area or your package manager and look for the keycad footprints and component/symbol libraries.

    • @oncledan8509
      @oncledan8509 4 года назад

      Hey, John !
      I finally manage to install the libraries. Like you suspected, no libraries were installed, causing this issue to happen. I am now slowly learning to use this CAD application. Is it better than EasyEDA ? Only time will tell for me. Although I would like to give KiCAD a fighting chance, EasyEDA has great features and I'm starting to really dig this one. A great feature is that you can import your locally generated Gerber file directly to JLCPCB and have it done at la lightning speed, but that's only good if you want to have your PCB done my JLC. Others prefer PCBWay or else.
      Thank you for the followup and have a great day !

    • @JohnsBasement

      @@oncledan8509 oshpark takes kicad direct. I'm sure others will do the same soon. I never used EasyEDA. After KiCon and hearing that there is funding comming in to support KiCad, I suspect it will progress with features o'plenty. ...I just hope some suits don't find a way to mess it up. 💩

    How do I solve this problem? Symbol L1 pad ~ Not found in footprint Custom Components:T-68-6 CT.

      I can't know without the component nor the footprint. But if you google the error message you find this:
      forum.kicad.info/t/pcbnew-error-reading-netlist-pad-not-found-in-footprint/11035
      The text suggests your are using a custom component, I'm guessing you named a pin ~ and used a footprint that has no such named pin. You need to change one to match the other.

      @@JohnsBasement This just gets too complicated. The developers should make things easier for the user. Maybe one day they will get there eventually but for now this does not help me.

      @@Berghiker I'm sure you can ask them on the kicad website. But it does seem reasonable to me for the pins in our symbols have the same numbers/identifiers as the footprint pads that they have to mate with.

      @@JohnsBasement It matches the one on the footprint but still can't find it. The same error shows up. Can you design a new custom made symbol with custom made footprint and make a video on that please?

    How applicable is this tutorial for Kicad6?

    • @JohnsBasement
      @JohnsBasement  Год назад +1

      Close enough for me to hold off on re-recording it.
      Main issues are some menus are re-arranged & that hot keys have been made standard between the schematic & PCB editors.

      @@JohnsBasement Well, I ended with installing V5 because I'm on Windows7. Your tutorial is well explained, easy to follow and understand. Thanks. S
