On a similar note: I was doing horseback riding for several years and sometimes it (especially bareback riding) kind of hurt. Therefore, I am still not sure how guys do it, so props to male equestrians.
I’m pretty sure the only reason men still ride astride and never side-saddle is that by the time a safe and secure side-saddle was developed, social norms had already established that side-saddle was “feminine” and astride was “masculine”.
I personally use specially designed jocks that lift the boybits up and out, and I’ve always worn my penetrative unit pointing up. Works well on horses and bikes. Haven’t squished anything in my life! I also think that riding since I was a baby just makes it second nature to feel the gait and feel the horse’s body and know if it’s bracing itself for something and brace accordingly.
Yeah, I only ever had a handful of lessons and made it up to a gentle trot, but it definitely is a bit rough on your pelvis even as a person whose genitals are mostly enclosed within their body, although that was probably partly down to my lack of expertise and me having all the grace of a baby giraffe, lmao 🤣 I can't even imagine the discomfort with balls, wouldn't it be like being smacked in the boobs repeatedly but worse???
Another example is when I’m doing a chair routine and do a Superhero on the chair back. If the chair back is padded, that’s best case scenario. But then it’s a matter of other costume bits like the lower part of my corset that provides a better structure and distributes the pressure, or ultimately finding the least painful place on my pelvis and/or pubic bone to balance from. This is because if you minimize the pain, it lets you focus on using your arms to support and steady the chair from tipping and using your core, glutes, and back muscles to lift your legs off the ground. I recently saw someone post this online: “Non-dancers see practicing fundamentals as a lack of skill, dancers see practicing fundamentals as a proof of skill.” In other words, practicing the basics of technique is how highly skilled performers prevent injury and mishaps by reminding their body on how to execute the performance safely.

As someone with balls who used to not be super concerned with protecting them while playing sports, it's pretty easy to avoid glancing blows doing stuff like this. With loose fitting clothes and supportive but not restrictive underwear, your balls move out of the way with slight pressure, and typically your scrotum pulls them in from all the movement. Only direct hits really hurt, which is why being kicked in the balls is horrific. But straddling a tree branch, they tuck themselves a bit. And you naturally don't put a ton of weight on them to begin with, it's second nature.
Honestly I think it's also a bit because of the fact that your body will redirect blood flow to other areas like the arms & legs. That really also does have the effect of shrinking the target area so the chances of impact are lower. But that doesn't mean you go commando coz the centrifugal force from a swing can make you end up right back where you started & then push you even further back. Learned that part the hard way.
