Knowing that the Astronaut is future Walter, the way he treats Danny is kind of heartbreaking. He's nice and encouraging to Danny, always acknowledging and respecting his opinions, trying to build his confidence, and having faith in him to do stuff. He even calls him "the Big Man" (the way his says it even sounds like something a big brother would proudly say about his little brother). This is most likely because he feels awful about the way he treated his Danny, and now wastes no time treating this Danny the way he knows he should have always treated his own Danny; like a loving, supportive older brother. Ugh, my heart!
This entire scene makes so much sense once you get to the ending. From the Fleet Admiral card, to how Walter acts just like the astronaut and when Walter asked Danny "Whose brother are you?", Danny sensed that the astronaut, too, was his brother.
I just want to point out that Walter's excuse for the Astronaut to leave is that he burned their couch and is eating their food. Now, the food part can be partially understandable, but the Astronaut did say he was starving. As for the couch I want to point out the fact that by this point in the movie, the house had several holes in the walls, the furniture (aside from the couch and a few other things) were completely trashed and Walter thinks a burning couch is their biggest issue with the Astronaut. On a side note, I find it funny that they put two references to the fact that the Astronaut was Walter from the future. One being the Admiral Fleet card (which is odd that he still had that because he's 15 years older than his younger counterpart). The second being that younger Walter actually says "Who's brother are you, your's or his?" which was clever but classy.
to also point out, how could they breathe or still have electricity? also another reference to the astronaut being from the future is that he jumped through a time sphincter god knows how he learned that word without education(space school?)
Now I see why the austronaught had the same card! It was walter from the future! Took me 13 years to figure this out (almost the age difference in walters) lol
Reece Cioffi Actually he's not from another dimension, he's from a different timeline (He says he goes through a time sphincter, not some dimensional gateway). The older Walter comes from a version where he wishes Danny away on a shooting star after a big argument, and by that point in this alternate timeline, the Astronaut would have already been there (as he's there in this current timeline to watch what he thinks is history repeating). Because of the Astronaut's involvement in the game, he not only helped improve Walter's and Danny's experience in this game, he helped them become better brothers (which is why young Walter didn't wish Danny away when the shooting star arrived). If your confused about the difference between time and dimensions, I can give you a brief explanation about them.
@@connorclemmons8698 I wonder what happened to Lisa in the original time line. Did she commit suicide, unable to deal with being stuck in space and one brother vanished?
Wasn’t there a scene where the astronaut becomes younger which shows that he is actually Walter the whole time and then young Walter absorbs older Walter?
Saw the movie a lot of times and even knowing the twist I never realized how much foreshadowing this scene had until now lol -Future Walter having the game cards -He knew Danny's name from the beginning but it was never mentioned to him -The time sphincter line itself tells all of us it's a time travel. -Just the way he treats Danny with respect without pushing him -Kid Walter asking who's Danny's brother. I love this movie.
I remember renting this from Blockbuster and just geeking out over the space theme and freaking out over the Zorgons. Zathura is a fantastic childhood movie and a very fond memory of mine
I'm still surprised they haven't made a sequel or prequel to this yet, we got two Jumanji movies with The Rock, when are we gonna get a Zathura movie hopefully with Felicia Day?
I too hope that make more Zathura movies. If they do decide to make more then they might tease it at the end of the new Jumanji movie. Jack Black likes to consider this movie part of the Jumanji series. Not sure if they should make it about people being sucked into a video game version of Zathura. If they do, their avatars could be a captain, a mechanic/engineer, a scientist, and a pilot. A cutscene would show what the astronaut told Danny and Walter about how the Zorgons burned up their planet. They could reveal that the black hole used to be the Zorgon’s planet before it blew up and the planet was named Zathura or it could be the name of that particular galaxy. People that could play the avatars are Vin Diesel, Channing Tatum, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Natalie Portman, Idris Elba, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Bryce Dallas Howard, Tom Hardy, and even Jennifer Lawrence. The ending could have two possibilities… One: Have it end with someone like Nigel thanking the players for their hard work and that it is time for them to go home. With that, they each need to enter separate pods that will shoot them out to space or they need to enter cryo freezing pods to put them to sleep. Either way, they will wake up back in the real world. Two: They will end up at the black hole and ship/space station the players are in will start to rip apart. If the robot is with them, it could try to hold onto them so they don’t get sucked in, but he’s not strong enough. One by one, they would each get sucked in. The last two people trying to hold on are basically the Spencer and Martha of this story. As they try to hold each other’s hands, the girl let’s go and be sucked in causing the guy playing the captain’s avatar to shout “NOOOOOOO!” Then they wake up in the real world.
I think a sequel wasn't made because it didn't do as well at box office as its competitors like Chicken Little and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
I always felt so bad for Danny in the movie. Walter was always a jerk to him, walter was an idiot and was trying to get danny to do things he didnt want to and put a lot of pressure on him (walter being older makes it more so), the fear and sorrow Danny must have felt when walter and the astronaut seemed tk be gone forever knowing you must take turns, the fear he must have felt when caught by the zoragons, and the fear and sorrow Danny must have felt when walter and lisa got sucked into the black hole. 😢😭😟
Walter: he burned our couch and now he’s eating all our food. You call that helping? Yeah, and he also helped turn off the lights which therefore kept the Zorgons away! So yeah, I’d call that helping.
I realized that the astronaut most likely from a different timeline where they never acutally landed the "rescue stranded astronaut" card to begin with... that means if Astronaut Walter never showed up, he would have wished away his brother... Without Astronaut Walter, they would have never won the game... spooky...

This came out when I was like 7. It’s so weird not having watched any part of this In the last 15 years now seeing how little the kids are. I remember thinking they were a lot older and had deeper voices lol.
Since it's revealed that the astronaut is the future version of Walter, I was confused how he could have known what a pilot light was since his younger self didn't know that's what the thing in the basement was called. But then I realized that he must've learned the name of it when he was going through astronaut training. Since it shows the picture of Space Academy on his astronaut shirt, my guess is that during the 15 years future Walter was stuck in space, Zathura had him study at an academy to become an astronaut and there is where he would learn about time sphincters and the Zorgons' history.
Look closely at the map of the game. You can see there is a Space Academy and since everything in the map appeared in the movie this just compliments your theory.
*1:58* "I gotta tell ya, the house looks fantastic." Is that supposed to be sarcasm? I mean has he seen all the holes in the wall and ceiling when he got there? 😂
If you want to know, Walter from another reality, after his brother's disappearance, sneaked onto the ship of the Zorgons, kidnapped him and went back to earth on it, became an Astronaut there to find his brother, but one day flying in space he got into the time corridor that Dani created after reading the map and so the Astronaut ended up in the past in this reality
Walter was really being an unappreciative brat here. The astronaut drove the zorgons away & instead of saying thank you, he complains about him eating & tells him go
Interestingly they never mentioned Danny's name when the astronaut came but he already knew who Danny was. But then again it's related to the twist at the end.
This Astronaut's story closely mimics that of Emperor Zurg (the future Buzz Lightyear) from the Lightyear movie: Even the astronaut (future Walter) reached space with the help of the game as well. He and his brothers did not respect each other as heroes. Walter was angry about why Danny was so annoying all the time and when he possibly cheated too but somehow Walter still got away with it and he continued the game and got the wishing star card and wished his brother hadn't existed but not in the way that his brother had never even been born (then the game would never have been started and Walter would have thus perhaps created a time paradox in this way which would have therefore taken him back to Earth) but in such a way that his brother would just disappear into non-existence. After that he was sorry and he couldn't continue the game and he was trapped in space and somehow he survived in space, the house probably drifted in space and Walter probably ended up in the Space Academy that was in the story of that game, almost like an alternative future imitating the future vision of the world in the 50s that young Walter wouldn't have recognized it himself, full of indescribable 50s sci-fi technology (i.e. the same as that robot was, it was a 50s sci-fi model) and after becoming 15 years older, having only eaten its food reserves (paste from a tube) at the space academy after completing astronaut training, after receiving the spacesuit, he realized that: If we can use wormholes in sci-fi movies to move through time, why not the same in real life, whether it's going forward in time or going back, so he went through the time slot, that is, the wormhole when he arrived at that point in time, 15 years ago in the past to help his younger self and Danny get rid of the Zorgons and to correct his own mistake. So, like Zurg-Buzz, the Astronaut broke time, and so what (just because of his presence) happened to young Walter never happened to the Astronaut. This moment in the movie was a new moment with never be lived. So they were able to change things. So if the Astronaut could go back in time, he could stop his younger self from wishing Danny away, from continuing their bickering, so they could continue playing the game, progressing and thus making it home. And nothing like that happened. And it worked out great. So this was a very similar event to the meeting between Buzz and his future self, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if this movie had served as an inspiration for that time travel and thus the birth of Emperor Zurg from the Lightyear movie.
Knowing that the Astronaut is future Walter, the way he treats Danny is kind of heartbreaking. He's nice and encouraging to Danny, always acknowledging and respecting his opinions, trying to build his confidence, and having faith in him to do stuff. And it worked out great. So this was a very similar event to the meeting between Buzz and his future self, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if this movie had served as an inspiration for that time travel and thus the birth of Emperor Zurg from the Lightyear movie.
Come on Admiral, your turn. 🤣
