  • Today were making apple pies for church homecoming dinner. This recipe is from an old Appalachian lady. This is the old fashioned way of thin stacked apple pies.
You can use fresh apples or apple sauce because we cook the apples down until they are a apple sauce.
    DOUGH
    4 cups self rising flour
    1 cup milk
    1 cup water
    1 cup melted shortning
This makes 6 pies if you use your scraps. Just rework with a little milk and they do great.
Thanks for everyone who sent me a pan!

There was a moment when I saw your great-grandmother's hands putting the top on a pie. It's a wonderful thing when people keep the old ways alive. Our connection to our past keeps us grounded, and helps us weather the storms of modern life.

I didn't think I'd ever see anybody make pies like my Grandmother from Western NC! Same pie pans too! Only difference, instead of cinnamon, she used Allspice, and quite a bit more. Also, when done, she rubbed the top with a stick of butter and sprinkled sugar on top. I make these pies now, probably the only one in the family that does. The best ever!!

Some of The old Appalachian ladies in Ky still make these but not as many as they used too! Got this recipe from an old lady that makes lots of them every year

Aha! Now, I see the function of those old pans. Easy peasy. No more crimping the edges. Thanks.

This really look amazing, I am going to give these a try myself. Love those old pie pans you used to make them in, made it super easy to get the dough to look really good around the edges. You are a good cook, you must be like myself and do allot of cooking at the house for the family. My n is getting older and don’t get around as good as she used to, so I do most of the cooking around here but don’t mind it at all, she raised me and taught me how to cook, so it’s my turn to take care of her.

Awesome job on the pies. They looked great. My mamaw was a pie maker. She would take one day a week and she would spend the day making and baking that my papaw loved. She would always tell me to learn to make pie that one day I would marry a man who loves pies and she was right I did. Lol but no matter how hard I try my pies are never as good as hers. She also used self rising Hudson cream flour to make her pie crusts It was the only flour she would use and it the only I use although sometimes I will use king author for bread but Hudson cream is my go to. Thanks for sharing

Boy, those pies look delicious!🥧 Apple pie is my favorite fruit pie! I love Hudson Cream flour! I've been using it for 25+ years. The reason I tried it the first time back in the 90s is because I loved the picture of the cow on the bag!😘 From that time on I never went back to White Lily. Hudson Cream biscuits melt in your mouth. I want to hunt me some pie pans like yours at the antique stores. Sure makes a pretty crust! A scoop of vanilla ice cream would go good with a slice of your pie!!!! Your church members will love your homemade pies. Great job pie making! I love to see men cooking. My husband can't boil water. I've taught our son (30 yrs old) how to cook.

Jared - I must say the house (cabin) is looking REAL nice. Noticed the fireplace mantel and clock. You and your wife have done a great job, since you started your cabin. I am always impressed with your skills in the kitchen and you seem to enjoy yourself. Always look forward to your vids. Best to you and your family.

I miss my mom. She cooked like this... She was born in 1924 in S.E. Colorado.
My brother has done a lot of genealogy research, and we come from a long line of "hillbillies", a.k.a. Williams'. The accent is natural to me, although my Colorado accent is more neutral. I'm offended by the southern accent, and I hear the difference. But back to my mom. I miss her so... She passed at 97, in 2021.
Being male, she didn't teach a lot of these details, I imagine she thought it was all intuitive. No, not really. Thank you young people. Truly.

@@FlutyLickHomestead thank you, I made these after watching your first video. I didn’t know how I should cut them, so I just cut all the way through them also. It’s good to know you do too. The pies are really great. I remember going to my great grandmother’s house as a little girl, and seeing a stack of pies like yours in the cabinet. I don’t remember eating any though. My grandma nor my mom never made these. I always wanted the recipe. My parents family were raised in Appalachian Mts., but later moved away.

If you can't find the self rising flour use PASTRY FLOUR sifted - 1Cup of flour with 1 1/2 Teaspoons of BAKING POWDER (not Baking Soda) you can add your salt at this time also.
