We used these in when installing cables for gate and barrier automation, not hard, you can hear and feel them through your feet when they go off course, main thing is having up to date underground plans showing where sewers and other services are. Amazing skills on the big build roof really uesfull for me on a current build, many thanks..
In my experience, thrust boring devices are excellent at "finding" other existing underground services! No doubt a great method to use when you're nowhere near any other underground apparatus, as it appears on the Big Build site. Thanks for another great video Robin.
I'm just finishing of a cottage conversion, needed new water main due to property being split. Crew turned up and moled new pipe in, never saw it before, great to watch and learn from a good experienced team. Strange thing was the guy in charge was my apprentice 20 year ago (we were in a different trade altogether then lol)
So informative & so entertaining. I wonder if I can get a thrust borer in Tasmania?! Interested in giving us a quote for our renno, Robin - we thought our house was pretty shonky, but this one is a revelation - Bodge Central?! I was horrified by the electrics & 'finish' in the kitchen - very lucky they never had a flood, be very interested to now what the sparky thought - I've seen some shockers in my time, but that was epic! So heartening to see someone as fussy as me!! Could you give us a clue what the budget is for this - for the building works, anyway. Great series, cheers mate!
Water pipes do not look deep enough, but depth used equals UK depth spec. UK blue water pipe often laid .750m to 1.35m deep. Perhaps starting at 1.5m deep will avoid common obstacles. To avoid freezing in Canada most specs have water pipes at 1.8m deep & sanitary sewer pipes at 2.75m deep.
My first job when I left school was doing mole drains back then it was a knife on the hydraulic arm on the back of a tractor you dug two trenches on the edge of the field then moled from one trench to the other then connected up to the main drainage pipes that was back in the mid 70,s we done an 18 hole golf course in a week
First saw a service bored in like that in the eighties. Energex used to run their new house lines from the street this way. The guys used to have a detector that they followed the borer with so if it started going off course they could dig down and turn it. On the farm we used a Mole plough for drainage and I have cheated using the tractor Mole to get water pipe from a dam to the stables. It is a good system but only works on certain soil types. Couldn't see it punching through the shale I live on now. That makes a rock breaker grunt.
Interesting technique. I’ve heard of trenchless but only the context of replacing an existing pipe. Looks like there’s a lot of inspection that happens in the US especially when it’s a new pipe. Thanks for the video.
It's been around for years can remember Essex water company which is where I'm from doing it and it was always called thrust boring and i must be talking 40 years ago at least.
I have installed plenty of new water services with the mole. The bit the fella attached on to pull the pipe through I refer to as a carrot I’m not sure what everyone else calls it. I would love to do 10 of these than to have 1 in the HRA carriageway. Great work robin as always 👍🏻
My missus is a big lass. "G'won, purra finger in. Now, put your hand in. Now, put two hands in and clap." I said, "I can't clap". She said, "tight, aint it?"
Just did a 6m soil pipe run in nothing but 25% clay and 75% old roofing tiles. Turns out my front lawn has more tiles under the grass than my roof does. Groundsman was not a happy bunny!
I got my ex wife something very similar for a birthday present. When I got home from work I asked her how it was . She said “ it is bloody dangerous.....it nearly took my teeth out.”
My missus has a mains operated one. Much cheaper than batteries. Trouble is, when she plugs it in, the street lights go dim and the screams of pleasure scare the starlings off the town hall clock 2 miles away.
There is another moling technology that uses highly pressurised water, but makes a mess. I saw it used to take ducting under a road (in MIlton Keynes) about ten years ago. Requires some bigger kit than these guys have though!
All that 'thrusting!!' EH? ... You wuz getting quite carried away there Robin ;-) .......... Great system though ..... Never heard of it, let alone seen it ..... I guess their Order Books are gonna be filling up a bit sharpish NOW then ? ;-)
In the words of Austin Powers. Mole! Bloody mole! We aren't supposed to talk about the bloody mole but there's a bloody mole blinking me in the face! I'm going to chop it up and make some guacamole! - Bet the groundsman hasn't heard that one yet.
I remember the first mole we had I’m in the trench and he’s sending it through And one of the lads said he could see it just slowly working it’s way out behind me in the footprint of an extension 😂😂😂
This technology is fantastic, but in reality it's a development of past technologies. You might find it interesting to have a look at mole boring from the 1920's. No where near as refined as today but a similar principle.
How come the pipe looked to be going down towards the back of the garden, is that where the water compamy connect it up to themains. How much do es this type of service cost per metre run.
About 20 years ago I was going to have a new water main installed (blue plastic to replace lead) . I was quoted £450 for 15 to 20 feet. In the end I dug a trench when relaying the drive and a plumber friend charged me £100 plus parts another £100 I was well pleased.
You just put a layer of clay in first. Officially you should sand it up 150mm, then marker tape, but on private land things aren't always done to spec.
Robin. A bit of brotherly advice. Your channel has a world wide audience Suggestive words /double entendre is not appreciated in all cultures. I know Brit humour is different. Do not risk alienating people Your choice! Best wishes Great video as usual. Keep up the good work. 👍
If you can take your time on a job then ultimately you’ll end up with a better finish . Fair play Robin . Insulate round inside of your velux frame timbers tho will ya 🥸 1 inch board
Mole man seemed like a barrel of laughs 😂
The Thrust Borer. That was Roger Bisby’s name at college
😂🤣
😂😂
Great banter with the mole lads, bet they were wild down the pub later

In the US this would be a much bigger mess! Great videos Robin!
That thrust borer had me in stitches. Brilliant bit of kit.😂😂
Absolute Brent moments in here RC 😂😂
A fascinating video, although not sure these other guys have a RUclips channel (or want one) 😀

i think you were very close to getting a swift right hander from the big geezer
It's great to see the jokes falling completely flat. Much funnier than if the guy had appreciated it. It was like an episode of the office.
Well the main banter was edited out!! Some colourful language!! Maybe I should post it as a short video to add some context!!!
@@ukconstruction Post it please Boss !!!!!
Maybe on Instagram!!!

Great video Robin, thanks
You learn something every day, cheers. 👍🏻😀
😂 I’m not sure he was getting your banter Robin 🤣🤔
I bet the big guy was thinking, I know where we could put the mole Robin. Got to have the banter, but it looked like it fell on deaf ears with him !
I edited out the main banter because we where using some colourful language, we are good mates!!
Rob is paying the bill he had to bite his lip 😂

Where did you get the 1.35m figure?

What fantastic technology! Definitely the way to do a new water main. Appreciate you sharing.
100 year old technology

I don't think those two blokes were feeling 'the bants' Robin...
Well there was a lot that was edited out!! Maybe I will post it on Instagram!!

Outstanding work 👍
They didn't seem overly pleased 😐 maybe they didn't get your banter Robin. It's great technology that does save time and muscle!
In the USA we call it "directional boring".
It's been around for years can remember Essex water company which is where I'm from doing it and it was always called thrust boring and i must be talking 40 years ago at least.

Heard of moling but never seen it in action. Good vid well explained.
Recently got gas installed using a mole. Excellent job. No mess at all in my front garden.
Build with A&E did a very good vid on a mole into a domestic building, its worth a look 👀
Love a bit of Build with A&E!! Great channel!!
Couldn't keep a straight face! Thrust borer - old school laugh out loud!
Happy lad that guy ..
Thought that might be the case. All good.
The missus wants to know where can she get one and are they rechargeable ?
😂

The ground around my house is the same. I wouldn't be surprised if I found an intact pallet of bricks at this point.
Some real good camaraderie there

Interesting.. the last mole video I saw had a machine that pushed solid pipes through.
“Ideal till the proper watermen get here” 😂 banter mate

Quality!!!
The main mole guy must charge for every word he says, so he keeps them at a minimum😂😅🥸
Not everyone wants to be on camera
I remember the first mole we had I’m in the trench and he’s sending it through And one of the lads said he could see it just slowly working it’s way out behind me in the footprint of an extension 😂😂😂
What's David Brent doing in this video and where did Robin go?
This technology is fantastic, but in reality it's a development of past technologies. You might find it interesting to have a look at mole boring from the 1920's. No where near as refined as today but a similar principle.
Now i know where i went wrong when laying turf.......... I walked on it using scaffold boards......... Should have compacted it down with a MD bucket.
Are all thrust borers that miserable Robin ? ;)
Is there any end to the uses of Robin's hammer?
Jeez Robin, you sound a bit like Michael Scott when you're talking about Banter...
But what happens when you get a water pipe team (the Blues) followed by a gas team (The Yellows) all separately boring?
Good video Robin, what's the max dia. they can do out of interest?
Hi Chris, it's 32mm

How much does something like that cost .. anyone know?

@@thetessellater9163 great 👍🏻

I'm not going to say anything 😂👍☘️🇮🇪👏
The Banter is what we live for. It's called the Robin Clevitt show.
Must be some budget on this build like
Do they protect the pipe with pipe beading/chippings b4 they fill the holes in ??
The HDPE pipe is very durable, wouldn't need it in clay - but with all that stone and rubble, it might!
@@thetessellater9163 thats what I thought

What company did you use Rob? I'm about to mole a main into my house also
shows the van at the end with all the info on
Poor guy comes to work for piece and ends up on RUclips. Most guys I work with would tell you where was going to get thrust bored next Robin! ..

Great video as usual. Keep up the good work. 👍
ah come on now.
if you are that sensitive you shouldnt be on a building site. this is very mild compared to what happens everyday.
thats hilarious they dont do banter!!!
👍
looks wrong digging a hole next a tree, will damage more roots than just moling past it methinks
Stakker gets the FIRST comment in again. Like a champion.
Watching the lot…. F*** Netflix 😀
Thats the idea Shane!! Welcome to the family!!!

Robin, avoid people with no sense of humour.
Are these videos “live “ or have you already done this job .
Taking ages cmon . Must have a good price in 🤫😄
