@@WilliamHBaker yooo id like to talk somewhere i wanna become a cinematographer myself and just was thinking if i could talk with you a bit about a few things?
I'm surprised this doesn't have hundreds of thousands of views with how ell produced and professional this video is. I don't do film making but I found this very educational and interesting.
Common mistake is also exposing the ext moonlight as much as the interior practicals. Moonlight compared to interior lights are usually really dim and it would certainly add more realism if you dimmed that ext light by a lot !
I'm a young Brazilian who had a great idea worthy of a movie, I'm putting together the script but you clearly have the kind of ideas that I can't execute on camera, you're great bro I hope one day I can talk about it with you
Thank you so much! I love filmmaking and I want to be a director when I am older. You have helped me pursue my dreams, and you are WAY too good at filmaking!
Thank you!! I would say I definitely over complicated it to some extent. I wouldn’t always think of all of that, and you can definitely get away with less, but I just find the intricacies of moonlight to be so fascinating!
I love the knowledge, the helpful hints and production value of your vids. Even though the delivery is a bit “over-dramatic” for my taste, it’s still destroys most other film/photo content. Well done
I love the video format of taking the most bare bones approach and slowing ramping it up while explaining what you're changing each iteratoin until you arrive at the final result. Somehow makes the whole explaination more intuative than dumping the steps all at once. Amazing video.
This is a great in depth video. The only thing I would add is that with moonlight and sunlight is that within the room you need some soft spill light from outside as the sun/moon would hit the surrounding environment outside and supply some subtle level into the room in addition to the hard light. This can be easily done with an additional soft unit outside or a skip bounce inside to bring the room tone up. I find that soft moonlight in the shadows is also a nice trick when you aren’t using hard moonlight through a window. Just my two cents! Thanks for sharing your insights :)
The chapters, the music, the diagrams, and the SCIENCE !!!! 🤌🤌🤌🤌 SO GOOD!!!! Loved this video. Also, did I see some DZO's in the background???? Future video???
Thank you! I love the DZO's TONS! I think I will end up making a video talking about them! Maybe going over lenses in general and how they work too! Also, I love your videos!
I'm a new viewer, I love your videos! They're so informative, and interesting as someone who knows nothing about filmmaking it just came up on my YT suggestions. Have been binge-watching since! These videos are just oh so cool!!
Excellent video. I really like how you systematically show the effect of each consideration, especially the difference between gels and color grading on colors.
6:30 well, they are most sensitive to green light, but if I remember correctly, there is a phenomenon where in low light, sensitivity to blue increases more than red and green. This is also used in film making to make things look brighter than white by making colours warmer, and appear darker than screens can typically display by using more blue, or cooler colours. Great video!
Amazing editing and video production man! But check how in most of your references the blinds don't overpower the practicals. Moonlight is very dim and the final result is still a bit overblown tho
Well done! I´m a beginner Filmmaker (not related to my channel) and this is very usefull cince its some high quality, entertaining content. Keep it up. Greetings from Germany
haven't watched the whole video. But from parallel lights, I recalled 10th grade physics. Concave lenses make parallel lights when the light source is on it's focal lengths
This video was so damn good and now I’m going to apply the same principles when setting up my moonlight ! Great stuff man ! Looking forward to more ! Now… to binge the rest of your videos !
Amazing video! I am not kidding... I was lighting a scene experimenting with moon-light yesterday and used a lot of your tips, and when I was finished, I went to RUclips and saw you uploaded this video. I should have seen this before. Mirrors is a genius thing. I want to experiment more with that, it makes lighting so much more interesting. One question, I want moonlight in a scene shot indoors for a short film, where it is supposed to rain outside, I know it makes no sense with moonlight when it is raining, but do you have any idea how to get that realistic? It is also so that you can see the rain on the window, as water need backlight to show on the camera. No idea if it is even possible to combine these two things? Keep making these amazing tutorials, William :-)
Maybe use a cyan gel plus a full ctb, the cyan will take out all the red that the moonlight is illuminating and the full ctb will cool the color and take out the green tint
Love it! The CRLS kits have been THE next thing on my list to buy asap for the accurate lighting needed to simulate the sun and moon! I'd be curious if you can get the same color by putting the gels on a CRLS kit!? Or RGB lights. I like blue/green tinted moonlight BUT i super like silver. If anyone is curious, Shane Hurlbut's Silver Moonlight look is achieved by white balancing Tungsten lights to 2800K NOT 3200K on the camera. I think it also works with LED's that are set to 3200K but it's the subtlest of differences between them.
Thank you for the detailed explanations! Just a question- when you showed the example with the moonlight coexisting with the lamps in your shot and in other movies, to me that always read more like the environmental light/ street lights reflecting streetlights from other surfaces more than "moonlight" specifically and so felt more realistic, is it always intended as moonlight?
Hey I like the look, but i do have some feedback. I think if you are going for a more stylized look, then this look works, however if you are looking for the "PERFECT MOONLIGHT" in a more naturalist way, i would suggest using a softer bounce panel like the crls panels to give your moonlight a softer spread and glow, also it would help the viewer to see a little bit of the darkness of the night which makes it more believable, yes you might lose output but i think it looks more natural that way. What you could do to bring up the overall levels inside, is you could bounce light onto a 4x4 beadboard and use your light meter to meter your ratios to match the level of your moonlight on the talents face, THIS WOULD ALSO PROVIDE A MUCH NEEDED EYE LIGHT :) Id also bring your light source even higher and tilted downwards. I do like how you mixed the blue and green gels, i've tried that before and got decent results.. Like i said overall good image, keep putting out more bangers. excited to see what you come up with NEXT :)
Thanks for the feedback! I don't have a light meter or the budget for CRLS reflectors, but could put together an alternative with some wax paper on a mirror or something!
@WilliamHBaker that would be interesting to see the results on that, u should definitely try that I'd love to see how that works. You could also use both sides of foil paper and see how that works. Keep doing your thing , more success to you and your RUclips channel 👌 💯
Theres nothing in the world where the moonlight would shine as bright as hollywood's been potrayed it as, exaggerating to achieve "art" look is acceptable aslong it is atleast close to realistic. but most of them moonlights are eyesoring to watch

What if??? you use the muslin cloth closer to the window with the final setup ??? We can soften the light a bit more right???
film student here, half way through the video and I wanted to ask: can moonlight be done without haze?
Hmm, usually they film during day of overcast. It is in post the look is created
couldnt you add a filter to the lens, so the red light wont be as visible without colorgrading?
so shine a light onto to a mirror or silver surface and apply a gel?
cant u mask out the lamp in post instead of jell if u can't afford all that?
?

What was the temperature on the camera?
I want to start a channel combining cinematography and music, just scared, also need help to get start.
What watt light did you use?
Sun= Fresnel, Moon = CRLS
or you could wait for a full moon /s
Does everyone see moonlight as blue?
To me, it looks more white or gray-ish
it looks overexposed outside
