Are all honorably discharged Veterans eligible for VA benefits?

- You may be eligible for VA disability benefits or compensation if you meet both of these requirements. Both of these must be true: You have a current illness or injury (known as a condition) that affects your mind or body, and. You served on active duty and you received an honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO COMBAT CRAIG. I HAVE WATCHED YOUR VIDEOS FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND I USED THE INFORMATION I LEARNED TO GET MYSELF TO 100 PERCENT T AND P WITH SPECIAL MONTHLY COMPENSATION FOR MY CONDITION. HAVING THE KNOWLEDGE REALLY IS WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY THE VA WAS GOING TO GIVE ME A FAIR RATING OTHERWISE.
I have an OTH, and am service connected at 70% since 2018.
I got an OTH and just submitted some claims as I’m a combat veteran and hoping to get rated also going to apply for an upgrade
How?
I'm not sure about dishonorable, but BCD discharges can receive benefits as long as you had a previous honorable enlistment.
OTH can qualify with a successful character of discharge determination by the VA.. The VA makes it's own determination separate from discharge..
Correct👍
Exactly what I did 👍
@@adamk6103 ☝️☝️
If you have a disability they'll waive the character of discharge...
Dishonorable discharge SMs could receive benefits for some issues. Most combat related.
I served. Honorable. Two consecutive meritorious. Two deployments. Combat Veteran. My last mission 2013. Got my ears wrong by a frag. Went from here and there to constant. I drown it with sleep aids, home remedies. Like Jack Daniels. Now my back is constant also. I remembered to put back pressure on my ears or they would have gotten blown out probably. 57 years old now. Old and obsolete. So it's been ten years and I got some other marbles rolling around also. My back is shot really. Can't lift chit anymore, pain all the time. Hoping I'll qualify.
I have an OTH and I’m filing my first claim. I don’t know what’s going to happen but I’ve met some other vets that have OTH and are service connected. While on active duty, I was actually diagnosed with depression are prescribed medication for it so I’m hoping that will help.
It really depends…. I have one as well. I did 8 years in. 6 and a 2, they decided my first 6 were honorable for VA purposes and the last 2 were not. I’m eligible for all veteran benefits (including the GI bill) based on the first 6. Any injury during the first 6 years is compensateable, any injury in the last two (dishonorable for VA) is treatable but they won’t give me disability for it
It’s a slow as shit process. I filed in December of 2022 and my character of discharge was finished in December of 2023 and then that allowed my disability claim to move forward. They scheduled my CnP exams a few weeks ago so now I just wait like the rest. But 18 months of back pay will be nice.
Best of luck
I’m not sure if I misunderstood or if you misspoke, if you were discharged during basic for a medical reason, you still qualify as a veteran for VA benefits. Even if you have bad paperwork, you can move to have it turned reviewed and redone so you can qualify.
The thing to remember is if you stood up and swore an oath, chances are pretty good you qualify as long as you weren’t dishonorably discharged.
that's called medboarding, technically you're retiring.
6 months active duty qualifies you as a Vet, I think. It may be 1 year active duty.
@@GenX_US_Marinethe legal definition doesn’t have a minimum timeframe
Reservist also qualify if the ailments can be linked back to the military. Plenty of reservists have VA ratings and can still be called to Active Duty. You simply have to give up the compensation when on drills and orders.
Wdym give up the compensation?
@@status7505 yes. If you receive VA Compensation you have to call them and tell them to stop the payments while on Active Duty. If you don’t then the system will start talking it’s money back because you can’t receive both at the same time.
Seems like nowadays they all get hurt in 2 weeks of training
Non Deployed Guardsman 50% va disability likely soon to be 100%. Unit I was in was intaking supplies from the Gulf in the 90s that were contaminated.
Yikes! Sorry to hear
People who served in the military regardless of discharge should qualify. At least they served.
Exactly
Naw. Timothy McVeigh was a veteran, Boe Bergdaul was a vet, so was the Fort Hood shooter and many other servicemen who didnt serve honorably. Just because you have that title "veteran" don't mean you're a good person or even deserve any care simply because you chose to serve at one point in your life. If you get a dishonorable discharge you shouldn't be able to get any care from the VA or any federal benefits, period. You dishonored your country.
No dude if you get booted out for fucking up you shouldn't get shit.
People that served in the reserves or national guard are also veterans. You don't get to take that away from them since if they get injured during training or drill, they get veterans benefits for their injuries.
They are only considered veterans according to the VA if they are injured while on active duty or went on title 10 orders honorably
@@gio-gk6nz training or drill are considered active times of duty. Hence the way I wrote that.
@@gio-gk6nz it's considered injured on the job. They are veterans regardless of whether or not the VA gives them benefits. The injuries must be attributable to a duty related incident or exacerbated by such activities.
@@wildcountry72 exactly you have to have been injured to be able to be considered a veteran by the VA as a reservist without title 10 orders. If you do a 6 year contract with no deployments and just drill with IADT then the VA doesn’t consider reservist veterans. Look at the VA link when searching “determining Veteran Status” it’s pretty straight forward
@@gio-gk6nz guess what, if you never get injured on active duty the VA puts you in the same regard as a reservist who never got injured. And three same is said about the injured. Thus reservists are basically the same and deserve the same respect as veterans.
Also if you have had a reenlistment and on the 2nd you get out with OTH or worse you still Qualify if your DD214 says in the remarks that your first enlistment was honorable.
are you sure that's right? Is that specifically written? I would be concerned with them finding out about that unless it is stated that is actually true.
@@johnnieboy66 He is correct.
I don't think that's correct. OTH is not good. I always tell these military personnel, when you get out you better have an Honorable or under honorable conditions discharge. All other discharges are gonna be tough to get anything.
It’s 100% correct. I have an OTH but I reenlisted so I served one contract honorably. I am using the GI bill currently. My dd214 said other than honorable but in the remarks section it says something like “continuous honorable service from xxx to xxx”
Yes I had an OTH discharge so the mountain I had to climb was much difficult then many others after two years they upgraded my discharge and now I'm at 90% with 3 claims pending that should get me to the hundo club. If my crazy ass did it so can you
Nice!
@@darthorion2002 I have a general discharge

Uncharacterized Discharge can also Qualify. I have seen it firsthand
That's true , anything but dishonorable discharge.
I love the shorts CC. Keep up the fight brother.

Great short CC, keep getting the word out. So many people who served don't know they qualify.
Quick question, I had a hearing evaluation at QTC and 2 weeks later got a check in the mail from them for $54. No explanation at all. Could this be mileage even though it's way too much for that even with the tolls we paid. Should I cash it or is it them trying to scam me somehow? Thanks
🤠🤠
If the check was cut by QTC, you should be good
Combat Craig, love your candor.
I’m VERY new to the disability filing process. Recently filed PTSD due to MST. (Drugged and sexually assaulted by 3 servicemen) that happened 27 years ago…. Recent events in my life has caused my anxiety , depression and PTSD to resurface with a VENGEANCE.
MY question is this:
I served from 27Dec1993-22Dec1995.
After reporting the assault to my CPO, she told me that I was just drunk, that I didn’t want to ruin the careers of 3 marines due to a “drunken, confused” night, questioned my sexuality, and mandated I go to alcohol counseling. I refused.
I was generally discharged under honorable conditions.
But… I’m 4 days shy of 24 months.
The VA has been treating me medically for years now.
Am I considered a veteran and do I qualify for other VA benefits?
I’d file a secondary claim for depression instead🤠
@@CombatCraig my primary MST PTSD claim is still at stage 3.
Do I wait for the answer from that claim first?

Thanks!
You bet!
Dr. Said i had pre existing ptsd. I never had anything before. I was young and didn’t realize that they knew what they were doing when they assigned “pre” to my diagnosis.
Under honorable conditions
Where do you even go to get started ? Just walk into the VA?
I’d start by educating yourself about the disability you want to file a claim for and how your going to establish service connection 🤠
I served in the National Guard, and my injuries during my deployment qualified me for disability.
I even got stuff approved that I got in Basic and AIT.
👍
Get on it then! Follow Combat Craig's advice & you will WIN!!
I did not qualify because I was told I was a Reservist, did split and never went to a Dr about my injury after discharge 🤷🏽♀️
I do have Honorable Discharge and my injury occurred during boot camp (which they don't deny occurred), but told that is not considered "active duty"... So I have been dealing with knee pain/issues for decades 🤷🏽♀️.
No option.
If anyone has a solution, I'm all ears, thanks in advance.
So how do all these national guards and reserves that go for 2 weeks and claimed to get hurt get 80 and 90 pct on BS?
My husband is a disabled Vet. He lost is sight. 1993 to 1996
So I was a dummy and I didnt go to medical for anything except one thing, reason is because it was a huge waste of time and I dislike the doctors that just tell you the obvious thing. Would i be able to get any disabilities claims if I dont have really anything on my medical records?
Yes, but get ready for an uphill battle and nexus letters.
Reservists who were on activity duty orders less than 90 days do not generally receive a DD-214 for that time. However, they were subject to the UCMJ, receiving active duty pay and BAH benefits, and were considered to be recalled to active duty during the duration of those orders.
I see the VA are denying these claims even when the veteran presents orders, military hospital records, and all manner of other evidence. Someone at a low pay grade sees no DD214, and skips directly to the “DENIED” part of her flowchart.
I got a DD214 with only 28 days because of injury while in training for deployment. Jumped out of a 5ton and ruptured my Achilles tendon.
@@thedoctor7949 that’s why I said generally, and there’s always an exception for any rule in the government
So I was medboarded as a medical discharge under honorable conditions in the reserves from a car accident do I still qualify? Having a hard time getting answers and do not know where to start.
Do you have an LOD saying you were injured in the line of duty? If so yes, you should definitely apply.
Get in touch with a DAV rep (Disabled American Veterans) to go over your case. Most major towns and cities have some type of DAV office and can get you going in the right direction.
The VA is like a bargain bandaid. It’s better than nothing, but it’s far from quality care. Now, there are a few above average doctors but most are docs who either can’t get work for administrative reasons, or they’ve run into legal problems in their past. Some will take the opportunity to turn their record around, but for most it’s a paycheck and that’s it. Granted, the VA doesn’t offer the best pay or working conditions so it’s hard for them to attract the best doctors. You may wonder why they don’t change the system? Simple, it’s all about $$$. If the VA keeps a vet healthy and alive, the government has to pay their retirement or disability pay! Bottom line, there’s no incentive to keep us alive!
So a senior in high school who joined his junior year as a reservist and went to basic, but got hurt during his senior year on leave would not qualify?
The way you started out this video is untrue I have been in a VA case for over 15 years I had a b c d it was never upgraded and and the VA determined that my character of discharge was wrong and I was honorable for my service so there is other ways to get benefits besides what you're saying you just got to fight it to the BBVA and then possibly the US supreme Court of veterans appeals like I did
Hi! Not sure you’ll see this and it’s super last minute, I have my discharge review board hearing tmw. I think I have everything but I am going for PTSD mental illness. Any quick pointers? They scheduled me last minute due to someone cancelled and I just want to get through this and do it the best I can.
I served 6 years in the military. I had hernia surgery (cut). I applied for disability got turned down 1st time. Got 10% second time. They said my scars weren't big enough.?
hey is a medical discharge honorable?
What if your injured while training with the guard or reserves?
If you have an LOD determining it was in the line of duty, then yup, you're good to go.
How do you look into starting school and using benefits I'm honorable discharge
Why would the payment be one thing one month and then they short you the next month
I was separated under Uncharacterized but upgraded to Honorable!

What if the VA says they lost your medical records and will not approve you for your benefits
Go to the VA and start getting treatment for those ailments and build documents. Get buddy letters (relatives or significant others included) who knew about your injuries in the service, and get nexus letters as well. I never went to medical to complain about tinnitus or mental and ended up service connected for both. Watch CC videos and get with a DAV rep or any vso.
What u do if they lose you medical records
What about national guardsmen/ reserve?
are you sure general under honorable get all benefits?
I'm getting 4098 with that starting in January so yes
Guard and Reserve also qualify. But their injuries had to have occurred while on duty, if they are not AGR.
My son was in a car accident and was treated for anxiety. The Navy knew about it and let him enlist. When he got to basic, he completely lost it plus they were in quarantine. He got out like five weeks later he is still having issues. Is he a Veteran and do you think he could file a claim?
Doubt it. He don’t get nothing because he didn’t complete basic or an enlistment: he wasn’t honorably discharged
No because it's not service connected. They're going to say his problems started before he enlisted , not while he was in there .
@@jmemixx That's not true . Once you sign that contract. The military is responsible for you .
