Silversmithing: Make A Spinner Ring (Type 1)

  • This video tutorial shows how to create one type of sterling silver ring that spins. This project is best for someone with a little bit of experience. People seem to love rings they can play with while they wear them, so these tend to be good sellers. This video is a bit longer, but is a complete tutorial, so I think it is worth the watch time. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

    Chad, your videos have become a real "jewel" among the teachers on RUclips. Really like that you are featuring items that are repeatable pieces for market. Would love to see some link bracelet ideas. (Ones using Jumpring links, a combination of tubing and jumprinigs, and any other neat connections for linking pieces together.

    Thanks! Y our super creative I want to thank you. You have really helped me. I’ve been metalsmithing for about 6 yrs all learned from you tube and reading. I’ve been painting since I was a kid and have literally spent my life doing art along with my full time job. I mean like full time 2nd job. But when I got my first solder to stick I was hooked like no other. I do a lot of clay and I love to enamel but enamel is difficult and very time consuming. Metal smithing is so enjoyable and helps me stay happy. I really wanted to thank you sincerely you really are one of the best channels for this. I hope you make tons of money! No sir, you are the best. The rest are too fast or disorganized, etc. I guess your teaching background helps. Have a blessed day!

      Thank you Shanda, not only for the donation, but for saying such nice things! I’ve never tried enameling, but have seen some really pretty examples of it. It does look time consuming. I’m really glad you are finding my channel helpful:). Thanks again!

      @@chadssilversmithing I was so excited when I found out about enameling because I could incorporate my painting on silver. I wish I could have sent more money! But I spent all my money on silver! Lol. But really🙃😂

    Nice patination on the flat section of the ring, where the heat brings the surface close to 999silver on the surface.

    This is almost identical to the ring I made in class and that I wear every day. We used square wire on the edges though. I have ADHD so I need something to fidget with sometimes. Funny story about my ring: I used to wear it on a smaller finger and one day it came off when I was washing my hands and went down the drain AT A GAS STATION! I was mortified to ask for help, but wasn't about to leave that gas station without my ring. I pleaded with the manager to help me. We tried several things to try to fish it out, with no luck. Finally, another guy came and opened up the drain for me (in the ladies' room). There it was in the trap. They probably thought, "All this trouble for that!" when they saw it. 🤣 I didn't care. I gave them each a twenty and left happy.

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Год назад +1

      Generally you have to start over. If you heat to the soldering point, you may be able to separate them, clean them up, and try again. Some people apply substances like yellow ochre or white-out to prevent solder flowing to certain areas. Read up about these before you try them. They can contaminate your pickle and may produce some fumes depending on what you are using.

    What do you think about using the inner ring to “wrap” the patterned wire, similar to creating a bezel for a cab. You’d be more likely to get closer in size, and less work cutting and resoldering.

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  6 месяцев назад

      If I'm visualizing what you are saying Sheran, I think that might be more difficult to do. There is a simpler type where you flare the inner ring on either side to contain the spinner parts:)

    Hello Chad! This is my first time watching one of your videos. I have been watching lots and lots of jewelry vidios. I really like that you show how to do things without lots of expensive equipment. This is the way I need to start so I don't have to buy a lot. The ring is really pretty. Can you tell me how this ring has to be cared for? Will this silver tarnish? Is this a soft ring that I would have to be careful with while wearing it?
    I will definitely be watching more of your videos.

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Год назад +1

      Hello Niobe Mom! Thank you for the nice compliment! This is Sterling silver, so it will tarnish over time. I use what are called “sunshine polishing cloths”. They work great for removing tarnish. As far as durability, if it gets bent, it will no longer spin, but should hold up great unless that happens. Thanks for watching!
