Hey A.J. I'm also a member at CHAS. The thing about the pet store walnut is it's not impregnated with the polishing compound. If you buy the Lyman kind (some versions of it anyway), it does a much better job.
Thanks, just used the Lyman red and wondered about the smell , now I know. I use an old Rcbs tumbler that I bought used and run it with the solid top. Btw also got a like new Frankfort separator and it works but really cheaply made and chinky.
Ive been useing one of these 15 to 20 years now. 2 hacks that are the same hack, cover the top with a plastic grocery bag while its working. i use to do the dryer sheet deal... not as easy or better than the bag. then when their finished simply turn the whole unit over and seperate the media from the brass into the bag (the media will fall through the holes in the lid the brass stays in the tumbler). then pour the bags content back into the tumbler for the next cleaning if its still clean enough, or throw the bag away if its too dirty. I also used to use all the things... car wax, some lemon stuff... I dont do that at all anymore never made any real diference. Just cleant it this way, wash in Dawn, dry - load.
I use ground walnut lizard litter and Turtle Wax chrome polish rust remover. Only need to run about an hour with really smokey 45 Colt cases. I also use a cheap mesh paper wastebasket from Dollar General to sift cases from media. On another note I also use walnut for buffer in buckshot loads, polishes the bore mirror bright. No lead fouling left.
For the dust: 1) 2 ounces of Mineral Spirits 2) Used Dryer Sheets 3) Scothbrite for the bowl, after every use to scrub out residue, if any. 4) NuFinish Car Polish ( The media should be slightly moist, but not "wet" )
Always worth it, not always for the price but the experience and ability to tailor rounds is valuable. (Plus might as well get it before its banned if current trends continue...)
@@tylersmith7443 i do have alot of .308 brass from my range. Like almost a bucket and half. Im thinking about reloading just one cartridge for now. Are those Lee kits worth it?

I was told to use a shower cap to keep dust down. I am going to try it.

Don’t use the rubber top nut. Use a washer and wing nut. It’ll keep it quieter

I used a media tumbler for years, then invested in a wet tumbler and would never go back.

I've never tumbled with plain media. Always use a polish like Lyman brass polish. There's products made for corn cob also.

@Kurt the Lee kits are great. One of the first ones I got was a Lee Classic Turret and it still going strong after years worth of reloading.
Cheaper to buy ammo if you are a plinker . But if you are into accuracy then you reload .
