One of the saddest stories in wrestling is how Verne Gagne was not born into wealth but worked hard decade after decade to build first a successful amateur career and then a successful business, and then lost his home and property to a land grab under eminent domain laws. He may have lost the wrestling wars to VKM, but died a much more honorable man than Vince will (even taking into account that accidental death Gagne caused while suffering from dementia).
Verne had some characters in the AWA territory my home territorty. I remember Mad Dog, The Baron, The Crusher and Bruiser, the High Flyers, and visting celebs like Dusty, the BlackJacks, Andre. Good matches!
I used watch every show and my dad bought every ppv i grew up in the attitude era but i dont watch any new stuff i always watch old one and his dad will be a legend in the art of wrestling long after he will pass
"I told Verne in 83', let me be me out there...Ill wear black trunks, black vest, drink beers, swear and give everyone the finger...Dad told me it'll never work.."
I have a science based question. Lets say a racist Gagne hired two black wrestlers to wrestle in the AWA in the 1960's, and they headbutt each other at the same time. What is the most likely result from the power of a double black headbutt? A) Both wrestlers are instantly killed, resulting in a double count out. B) Neither black wrestler is affected but the all white members of the studio audience are killed by the shock waves. C) Nothing would happen because Verne would never hire more than 1 token black wrestler at the same time in the AWA.
Gotta love how Greg twists some things….instead of just saying Verne was the second athlete to ever make $100k a year, he had to say he was the first after babe Ruth to make $100k a year…ok Greg, whatever makes u sleep better at night, bud.
Joe DiMaggio, Gorgeous George, and Lou Thesz all made 100G before Verne did. Verne hit the marker in 1953 I'm sure. Not sure Babe Ruth ever cracked 100G, maybe 80G.
@@curthennig9448 I am not sure about their yearly salaries. Gene Tunney was paid $990,000. For his 1927 fight with Jack Dempsey. Dempsey received a similar check.
Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey both made over a million in their two fights in 1926-27. Both fighters had multiple big money fights for about 10 years. Dempsey probably made more than Tunney during his career because he fought exclusively at heavyweight. However the second fight between the two Tunney was paid $990,000 . A record at the time.
My dad, Verne Gagne,...gosh what didn't he do??? Verne told Steve Jobs to keep going with that Apple thing kid...Verne also didn't get credit for inventing the air fryer and his initial work on the original lunar module.
I have never heard at any time when mentioning those greats have I ever heard Gagne mentioned in that group. Granted I haven't heard everything but this seems like a big stretch to me
Verne Gange was ONE OF the first major stars in wrestling in the DAWN of televised wrestling. This is indisputable,....but he was NOT the first major star in wrestling. Gagne was a legit elite athlete and was a TV star, but Thesz, Londos, Lewis, and Hackenschmidt were major draws before Gagne, and they started before Gange became a pro wrestler. But Gagne had the benefit of being in his prime in the golden age of television, and it DID make a huge difference. But you can not say Verne (as much as I personally prefer the technical style of pro wrestling) was the FIRST major star. The argument could be made that he was the first major wrestling star on TV. And the amount of money he made was legitimately through the roof.
Soon to be the newest inductee of the Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame, Greg Gagne. The haters gotta be fuming.🤣 Since Greg has retired from his illustrious Pro Wrestling career as a good guy, the most remarkable thing has happened. He has apparently become one of the most popular Heel attractions on the internet, with legions of internet stalkers, following his every appearance on the web and attempting to mock him, much like I tried to mock Bobby Heenan when I was a 10 year old kid, by chanting "Weasel! Weasel!" at him. Bobby would tell us to shut up, then go over to Rodger Kent's table and tell him to make us brats shut up, and then act flustered that we were calling him names. It was great fun as a kid, and *Bobby was the best.* A little acknowledged fact is Bobby thought highly of Greg's in ring abilities, saying decades later that his weasel suit matches with Greg were great, and The High Flyers were amongst his favorite people to work with. When the GOAT praises you, you gotta be pretty dang good at your job. And the fact that Greg can get 30+ year old men, figuratively shrieking via keyboard at his video clips, when they don't even get a reaction out of Greg (like we did from Bobby), speaks volumes to his continued ability to be a personality and draw attention. Or, maybe it says something about grown ass men, acting like children. I dunno. 🤷♂ Anyway, have a wonderful day and God bless ya. 👍

Yes absolutely, Verne obviously was a far more honorable man than Vince. I loved the AWA
AWA was true wrestling
Vince McMahon was behind that land grab.
It’s too bad I don’t see any of that in Greg.

Greg Gagne told Mike Graham to only hire wrestlers that can draw dimes and don't break guitars.

Same old stories.

You would think that Verne would have made Greg AWA champ at least once. Then again, I'd rather watch paint dry than watch a Greg gagne match.
I've seen articles and videos that said he tried on a few house shows but the crowd response was so negative he couldn't follow through.
