Wow! I have made butterflies in the past, but they wilted on the frosting! Now! I will be able to make amazing butterflies for my spring cupcakes! Thank you so much! Game Changer for sure!
thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly :-). I thought I would try the Luster Dust first. I tried making some lace before with disastrous results but I didn't use these products so I'm going to give it another try LOL
Thanks for showing me the way you have used the mat for 3D butterflies. It was really interesting as I have not yet tried mixing the premix with the powder, I just used all premix. I also tried premix followed by a coat of powdered mix. Those were also firm but 24 hours later the wilted again. Can you let me know if the ones you have made using the above technique were still like that 24hrs later? It will be useful to know and thanks for sharing.
So, I've had a look at the butterflies again 24hrs later and they are definitely softer than before, but they are still holding their 3D shape (some better than others). I'm not sure if they will continue to soften or not. It's quite hot and humid here at the moment, which I'm sure isn't helping. I think if I went to use them and they were too soft, I would put them back into the oven for 10 min on the foil triangles to dry them out again. Hope that helps. I'll let you know if they continue to change.
My husband just got me this butterfly sheet, can you tell me what stuff you use as we thought it was for fondant but that didn't work lol, I need to make these 😊
Hi Dot. I used the Claire Bowman Cake Lace products: Cake Lace White Mix - 200g - amzn.to/2947MCI Cake Lace Spreader - amzn.to/1vcsXcU Cake Lace Premixed Pearlised White - amzn.to/298uewT Also, there are some other cake lace products available, which I haven't tested, that might be quicker to order: Madame Loulou Smart Lace - amzn.to/3lhtIRY Have fun!
hi! This butterfly mat is the prettiest I've seen. Where can I find it to purchase??? Your videos are so easy to understand, thanks for all your hard work!
Thank you so much and thanks for watching! I bought my mat from the UK from here: www.cakelace.co.uk/product_info.php/butterflies-lace-mat-cake-lace-mat-claire-bowman-p-225
I also found after some time the bigger ones went flat, when I am ready to use them can I put them bent over foil peaks and bake again? Thank you so much for your response.
vimi gisby I haven't tried that, but I don't see why not. Baking will dry them out again and should make them hold their shape again. Please let me know how that works out! :)
hi. I really need to make a 3d butterflies for a wedding cake. Can you tell me, please, how do you call them mixtures and where can I buy them in the UK? thanks for your reply
+ladij153 The regular mix is 4 tablespoons Part A and 50ml water (mix for 2 min), then add 1/2 teaspoon Part B (mix for 5 min). I have a mixing video if you want to check it out - ruclips.net/video/GglKreCLZ-M/видео.html The slight curl in the wings was natural. I just left them on the foil peaks and they did that on their own.
Followed your instructions and my 3D butterflies came out as suggested, however, some broke and are not so flexible. What is the best way to store them? Thank you
vimi gisby If you would like them more flexible, you can play around with the baking time. I find that less time in the oven and they're a little more flexible. I also find that they will soften if it's really humid. I store mine in an aluminum pie dish with foil over the top and that works well for me. Thanks!
+Vera Boulton Yes they do tend to soften on buttercream. If you put them on the cake at the last minute, then they will likely keep their shape while the cake is presented and cut :)
+Tania Yanez-Duncan Hi Tania. It sounds like you might need to let them dry out a little more before trying to pull them out. I hope that works. Thanks!
+Tania Yanez-Duncan Oh no. It shouldn't be sticky at all. Is it really humid where you are? Maybe it's just too humid. 've never had them be too sticky...it just sounds like they haven't dried properly. If air drying isn't working, then you might need to dry them in the oven.
Hi! I followed your video ( thank you so much for this) and they turned out great out of the oven.... But the went all limp and floppy the next day :( any tips?
Hi Karen! Thanks for watching and glad to hear they turned out great...but sorry to hear they went floppy. I've found that they're very sensitive to moisture/humidity. So, I keep mine on some foil in a cardboard cake box (that's not air tight) in a dry, dark cupboard (so air can help keep them dried out). That seems to work much better. I've also had success in popping them back in the oven to dry them out again, if they've gone floppy. Hope those tips help.
Isabel Gerena Hi Isabel. I haven't tried coloring them before. The premix mixture comes in different colours, so that's the easiest way to get a different color. The butterflies are quite delicate, so I would be concerned that the Color Mist or edible paints would be too heavy and wet. I would probably try a color/shimmer/pearl dust as they are much lighter and dry.
I've stored mine for about 3 months before using. I keep them in a foil container, loosely covered, so air can still get to them and keep them dry. I find if you put them in an airtight container, they wilt and go back to being flat.
+Chandu Ram I think Amazon will ship to India, but I'm not sure about which items. This is the butterfly mat, if you want to check it out - amzn.to/1ARlC3P
Hi my name is sue just been trying the 3d lace butterfly's to your instruction baking three times they came out hard left them overnight and they have all gone flat is there something i'm not doing i have wedding cake next week and really need this to work for me please help x
Susan Lawrence Hi Sue. There are a few things I can think of that might help. Did you use the 2 different mixes - white dry powder mix that you mix up yourself and the premixed cake lace? You can also try to vary the cooking temperature and time as each oven is different - you do want them to come out dry/hard after the last bake on the foil so that they'll hold their shape. When you left them overnight, was it in a humid place? - I find that if they go in an airtight container or are just in a humid room they'll absorb the moisture and flatten out again. You can always try putting them back over the foil edge and baking again to dry them out again. I hope these suggestions help :) Please let me know if you have more questions
Susan Lawrence I'd try 1 tsp white mix combined with 2 tsp premix on the first coat and then just the premix on the second coat. That's the only thing I think I did differently.
+Magik Dust To make it thickstrong enough to hold the 3D shape. If you'd just like to lay the butterflies flat on top of you cake/cupcake, then one coat is fine.
Nanci Miranda Hi Nanci. I find the easiest way to color them is to brush a little bit of lustre over the finished butterflies. This is one of the colors of lustre dust that Claire Bowman has - amzn.to/1NTQMfR. They also make different colors of the pearlized cake lace - amzn.to/1LQd2oM - so you can just use the color you're after. I also think that you can use a small amount of concentrated gel food coloring - amzn.to/12k2X3h - to tint the mix to the color you want, but I haven't tried this method yet.
I just can't get this to work for me, if I put in the oven for the said time..they go limp and if I put them back for a further minutes they go hard and crack.......just failed for the 7th time........help
belinda meadows Oh no. I'm not sure what's happening. So, you're baking 3 times total - 1 with a combination of the 2 mixes (premixed pearl & white powder mixture), 1 with an added layer of the premixed pearl, 1 with the butterflies hanging over the foil? There are only 2 things I can think of - One is using the combination of the premixed pearl and original white mix in the silicone mat. Two is that your oven might be too hot. I always keep an oven thermometer in my oven just to make sure (my oven's not reliable). If you've tried all of that, please let me know and I'll see what else we can think of.

Using a colored cake lace mixture works or using a luster dust (or similar powder) once dried works too.

Hi, can you paint them with brush
Hi. You can use a brush to dust them with color, but you need to use something dry like a luster dust. If you use wet paint, they will melt/breakdown.

what is white powder mix? cornflour or icing sugar...thanks
BEAUTIFUL
love your video and want to try making them but i dont know what you mean by dry powder mix.
Susan Burns Hi Susan. Thanks! The dry powder mix is the Cake Lace White Mix - amzn.to/1JUKv60. It comes in two parts and you need to mix up yourself.
were can you buy it
Very nice
I want white butterflies. What do I use in place of the peralised White?
Marion Curtis I'm not sure what you'd use in place of the pearlised white. I would try using the regular white both times and see what happens.
How do you make colored ones?
I am very happy to watch your video i am from moroco and my inglich is not good so excuse me but i inderstund think you very match
What would you recommend to do if I wanted these to be gold butterflies? Thank you so much!
They make a gold cake lace. Or you could just brush the dried butterflies with a gold luster dust.
It's amazing butterflies, but where can I purchase this mat.
Thanks!
How much water and part B liquid did you use for the regular mix? Also, how did you get the slight curl in the butterfly wings?

oh, okay...I thought you mixed up just a partial recipe! Thank you!!
How do they hold up when used on buttercream cakes instead of fondant?
They absorb the moisture from the buttercream, so they do tend to wilt a bit. I would just add them at the last minute for a buttercream cake.

Tweenie weenie A few things that you can try that seemed to work for me are:
1. increasing your oven temp (I bake mine at 76 celsius)
2. baking the 1tsp white mix and 2tsp premix as the first layer, then the purple premix as the second layer
3. only bake the first and second layer for about 10min (then bake for 20 min when they are over the foil)
Hope that helps!
Would the purple still have the design on if i did it as the 2nd layer? Sorry to sound clueless x appreciate your help
Tweenie weenie Yes, it will still look like the lace pattern, so you need to make sure you scrape off any excess mix.
sorry didn't see this video frist
No worries. Thanks for watching!
