Sea of Thieves: Curved Cannonballs and How to Aim

- Cannons, the most used damage dealer in the seas, as it is usually the beginning and the end of every battle, it can scare pirates away, or it can lure them to you if they are looking for a fight.
The direction and projectile of the Cannonball depends on several factors, like the angle of the Cannon, ship speed, rotation, and direction. If all these factors are taken into consideration, you will never miss a shot. And I will help you achieve that.
When engaging in battle, Cannons are used to Deal Damage, Curse or launch a player for an attempt to board the other ship. So making the right decision is always an important role on what to use, should you curse? Use a cannonball, or fly for a boarding attempt.

Ur the best
Who won’t want to sub cause your videos are pretty good
Dude this video was super helpful but I’m interested in the music you use
So you didn't cover having cannon aimed non straight?
Handy vid nice one. I opt for the tactic of missing the first 6 to find range and hitting 2 of the remaining 4! :D
Yeah that sounds about right
I just miss all 6
@@matthewb1722 the sad thing is this is very true i rarely hit anything
They say I'm missing but I'm really just testing the distance.
I see I am not the only master at this technique!!

@@danboisoepic4544 bro that shit was so smooth i didn’t even notice
The issue isn’t that I can’t aim where my cannonball is going horizontally, it’s that I usually overestimate or underestimate how high the cannonball goes, leading to me either having the cannonball fly over the ship or into the water.
Same bro
I've been playing for 2 years and that still happens ✌️ it's mostly because of the waves going and down, much like the max 3sec harpoon timing + waves 🤣
Same.
I have heard that you shouldn’t control cannon with mouse, control it with W A S D
Idk if u still play but i aim half mast usually
Cannons the start and end of most battles.
Gunpowder barrell: "Am I a joke to you?"
Haha nice one 😂 sorry Sir Keg McRedBeard I have offended you

@@redstonewizard3450 The ol' banana inferno. Nobody ever expects it.
Hear him saying it again. “Cannons start and end *MOST* of the battles”. That doesn’t mean *ALL* battles.
You hear about those Pirates from the Sea of Thieves? They've got CURVED canonballs.
This is genius
I have no idea if that was a skyrim reference or not but if it was then yes
@@carpet8135 it was a reference to the alik'r warriors from hammerfell that arrive in whiterun searching for saadia, yes a skyrim reference

1:46 actually its not trying to act as if its stationary. This actually means the devs have coded the canon balls to behave as they would under the actual laws of physics, which is pretty cool because most games with projectiles often ignore this and have you lead targets instead.
But an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon. Your ship is moving forward, which means the canon and the canon ball are too. So when you fire the canon, the ball is launched out in that new direction, but its still also moving in the direction it was with your ship. After all no forced acted upon it in a way to stop that trajectory. So thats why it curves to meet the canons position as it flys. Or at least thats why it would IRL. Its really cool that the devs coded it to behave realistically like this. Its not often that you see this.
There used to be an old WW2 bomber gunner training cartoon on youtube that explains this as part of its lesson. Its prob still up if anyone wants to search for it. Youll see that these gunners were actually trained to aim similarly to how phuzzy is aiming here and that they dont actually lead their targets the way a lot of games have you do in these situations.
Imagine if the game had Coriolis Effect. No shot would be hit other than point blanks.
Is that how it works irl? Lmao here I was thinking SoT was coded weird since I just assumed from all the games I've played it was always the other way around. Thanks for clearing that up though.
"After all no forced acted upon it in a way to stop that trajectory." Except for the force of air resistance, so cannonball can't land in the same column. And the longer distance, the bigger difference.
@@Pavel_Leonov Yes there is some force in regards to the projectile and the air. But no where near enough to make this aiming method incorrect. If you're moving in one direction, say north, and you fire a projectile perpendicular to the direction of your movement, say east, you should still expect it to land at a point north east of where you initially fired the projectile. The air resistance isn't going to stop the canon ball from traveling north.
@@moonlitegram I agree, the projectile will land slightly north of the initial destination. But cannonball will be traveling north slower than our ship because of air resistance. Summarizing, the projectile must land northerly of the initial point and southerly of our ship. Whereas in this game it lands precisely perpendicular to our ship, as if we are in space.
Sorry if I wrote something not correctly, I just recently started to learn English.
Look, I know I'm a year late, but holy hell the scene transitions were smooth.
Edit: I forgot this was a family-friendly channel.
Look, i know im a year late but i agree
I just want to say, you are one of the most wholesome streamers/content creators out there, and your videos have been SO helpful to someone new to Piracy, I appreciate your knowledge and i hope you don't stop any time soon.
Thank you 😊
I agree, phuzzy is my go to for all things SoT. I started almost 2 weeks ago and I'm almost pirate legend and i regularly kill whole crews when boarding. Ruffian sea dog pistol + briggsy sword for the win ;) on the grind for gold hoarder curse
After watching this video I went to the nearest enemy sloop and rolled by on half sails, landed 4 shots and then i turned around to shoot them again but they sunk by the time I turned all the way around...you wouldn't think that going to that island and practicing would be helpful but it is VERY helpful and i almost wish the game developers were smart enough to teach like you do. I still feel fucked when i get boarded but i can do some serious damage with my cannons now
That column thing is actually a super duper helpful tip for predicting shots and landing them, thanks!
My wife and I also play and sometimes our daughter who loves playing music and being in the crows nest. Thank you for the great videos. I particularly have noticed in some of your videos that you have a more honorable approach - not griefing new players or people doing tall tales. Wish there were more like you in the sea. We're somewhat new at the game and your videos are helpful 👍🏻😊
Once again, thank you very much for this! I've gotten into Arena a lot recently, but I always have a bit of trouble aiming cannon shots, so thank you!
You are welcome 😊
Dude. I love you so much right now. This was my biggest obstacle being a newish player and now it all makes so much sense. Thanks, I was about ready to quit permanently.

NAH
Im gonna blow this guide wide open
Lmao 🤣🤣🤣
I'm a new pirate on the seas, (who honestly prefers to *avoid* PvP whenever possible). I've been lucky so far, but most everything I've learned has been from your channel! Thanks, Phuzzy!
I do NOT however, like the removal of the arena mode, it is what is needed to be able to get the pvp practice in to learn how to properly defend yourselves because the pvp and pve are so vastly different (plus the aim on enemies is a little outrageous) but i started super late and have only been in arena a few days and it has already helped me TREMENDOUSLY when it comes to being able to utilize what I have at hand and not waste a massive amount of my time in adventure just to get destroyed when I go into pvp without said practice. All I’m saying is, I think there still needs to be some game mode for us who enjoy that. Its good as a time saver as well as quick fun pvp
1. Stationary vessel: 1:07
- Only thing to account for is projectile weight and boat rocking
2. Moving Vessel: 1:46
- The cannonball will always be parallel with the cannon whilst in the air. Account for this by predicting where the cannon will be pointing when the cannonball hits.
3. Rotating Stationary Vessel: 2:36
- Treat this scenario like the stationary vessel but add less than a second of delay.
4. Rotating Moving Vessel: 2:52
- Predict where the cannon will be pointing when the cannonball hits (see 2.) and shoot away from this position in the direction opposite to which you are rotating. Adjust for how fast the rotation is.
Personal tip:
- Make sure you account for the speed of your opponent. You can do this by using #2's technique, but using the cannon's position in relation to their ship. If they are going the same speed as you, you can treat it like you are both stationary. If they are going slower, aim behind them to the point where your cannon will be aiming at them once the cannonball fires. If they are going faster, do the opposite.
Get this comment at the top, it’s legendary
I don’t have any clever comments for this one.
Good video tho. Very helpful
I personally like the duke cannons as they look like an iron sight and give both a frame of reference around the sight and the aim itself. Helps me a decent bit lol
I just started today, a shark killed me and my ship, this helps a lot!
3:39 That was a very smooth transition
I ausually don’t like tutorial videos like this bc it’s just
People flexing, but your tutorial over this especially the moving ship was VERY helpful
Thank you matey 😊

Yet another great guide Phuzzy!
This video helped me improve back when I was still on controller. I find myself back over here following a recent switch to keyboard/mouse. Love these guides
That transition at 3:38 is sick! Loved it
Shooting while turning is one of my favorite shots it's just the first one you have to send it to see the angle after that it's on...
4yrs and still the best advice
Thanks, Phuzzy! I watched your vid and now im a pro with a cannon!
Useful video!
Always used the first shot as a reference when adjusting cannon trajectories. Now I know more
I love hitting those long shots in arena it makes me laugh every time😂
If anyone has played Tribes (Ascend). You can akin the cannon shooting to shooting projectiles at high speeds. The projectile travels from where it shot WITH you. Except for when turning/rotating. It does not shoot from your position as if it was stationary while you are moving.
This is actually a real world thing, and when games incorporate this, its almost unnoticeable because in one natural way it just makes sense. If the cannons would shoot from where you fired it, you would have to aim ahead of a moving target despite you moving with that target. Currently, while moving with a target, you only have to fire at it as if you both are stationary.
3:41 that transition was crispy
Love how you get right into your videos. Bravo!
Well, well..bonecrusher cannons have even the sight!
0:14 was such a good transition i had a to a double take. nice
This is one of the most helpful videos I've ever see
Great vid bro, thanks
3:38, sick transition...
This simple and short video helped me and my friends SOOOOO much! Thanks you very much!
You have definitely earned my sub :D Keep it up sir!
really great way to think of where the cannon ball will end up!
thanks :)
I like how sea of theives uses real physics when it comes to battle and sailing
Transition at 3:37 was sick
I went from missing every shot to hitting them all after this!!
Steve Mould has a video on a backwards sprinkler that can further help with the understanding of the perception of the physics here.

Actually after been playing for so long it kinda become natural thing to aim with cannon, the only thing that really hard to get used to even after so long is the fucking waves that obscure the vision
No fucking lie. Atm, I’m stuck on the vertical drop. I got the horizontal trajectory on point, but I’m hitting either right below or right over
Great video! I love me some Phuzzy!!!!
This is pure gold!!
Nice guide Phuzzy keep up the great content
As a longtime Tribes: Ascend player, this is second nature, but this is an excellent guide for leading, arcing and projectile inheritance.
i recently sank my first skelly ship last night as a solo, ive only played for 23 hrs and im addicted to the game lol.
Cannons are my favorite toy in the pirate arsenal. I would love to see a companion video with more advanced techniques such as the importance of the helmsman, speed-loading, distance, etc. Brilliant yet again and you make my Mondays brighter when I hear that soothing voice and see that iconic fro 😊
Haha thank you 😊 lots more coming, feel free to request anything and I'll be ready to cover it
Awesome vid, very informative... but knowing that this is a old video can you confirm it's still the same or has the aiming of the cannon changed over the years
It's the same 😊
@@PhuzzyBond ah right cheers for the confirmation my dude
3:39 that transition tho!
Cannot wait to purchase the game! Excited to play it!
@Spencer Roper yes I did. Learning the ropes.
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing!
I definetly have a preference for the bone crusher cannons due to the iron sight
I like the marker on the hunters call cannons, not as intrusive as them boney bois
I cant hit anything with the bonecrusher cannons 😂
idk if mentioned here cause i didn't watch the Video yet, but its the easiest to sail East cause in this direction the waves are on your side. The hardest to sail to is NW cause from there the waves directly come in your direction.
My problem is, sometimes my cannonballs go infront of a ship and sometimes it goes behind. i need to know from which direction i need to predict it more forward or more from behind.
Idk if i explained it right my english isn't so good lmao.
0:00 i love this dudes ego,
Thanks for not making this a half hour long
Cool Vid learned a lot today
Still the best cannon ball pew pew video. 🫡

Thanks so much!
Very helpful. Thanks, brother
Thx dude
Awesome video
Super useful, thanks !
Can you do a guide on how to sink a sloop that both of the players just spam throwing knifes?
Goodbye potato aim!! 😁 Great video Phuzzy, thank you 👍
You should add a grapple hook item that works like a harpoon but has half the range of one
P.S give it a small amount of falling so you can use it to scail small mountains
Thank you
This helped me
I only started about a week ago, maybe more, but i aim instinctually and im pretty okay, not the best, not the worst possible slightly better then normal? Either way this was helpful.
Your Video´s are very solid Mate, keep it up ;-)
Hi! Quick question - if you you don't mind: Which cannons did you use in this video, and how do you obtain them? Great video! 😀
Hello, These are the golden cannons, unfortunately they were for year one players and not obtainable anymore.
@@PhuzzyBond Oh, OK. Do you recommend any other 'Non-Flare' cannons, that go well with the Royal Sovereign Ship Set?
Anything that is painted is fine, like the Seadog set, (not the arena one) , or the default sailor, also royal sovereign ship set is FTW , good choice 🤗
@@PhuzzyBond Thank-You! I think, that when I get to Pirate Legend, I will use the Legendary Cannons, as I think that they are painted. ☺.
Thing is with the first example, and I feel like you should know this, you marked where the cannonball hit, then marked where you hit getting shot out of the cannon. What if the ship was rocking?
Like when you shot the cannonball, it was rocking up, then when you shot yourself it was rocking down..?
Good video
Then add rotational axes from variable waves.
Most of the time I can’t see the enemy ship because the waves are in the way. So I think I’m right on, but I’m short or over shooting.
bro just did the cleanest transition ever and acted like we wouldn't notice 3:39
i really didn't notice
I tried this just now but it doesn’t work any more due to the new wind mechanics, I was constantly pushed off course from the hard right and at full sail. When I started playing a month ago I felt like I was making aim progress, but now this past week or so since the changes I can’t aim for love nor money….constantly missing and getting boarded by others who also ant aim, it’s just pushed up the hand to hand combat which is awful if you’re overwhelmed, no chance to win with a crew of 3 on 1
01:10 I felt that
For all the people watching this after the last update, they changed the way cannonballs behave when shot! :)
M W How so?
Hello mate can you elaborate on this ?
@@PhuzzyBond its a more direct shot with less trajactory. At least this is what it feels like.
@@mw3609 I felt that way with chain shots, they don't curve as much . Not sure why
@@PhuzzyBond for sure. I think they changed the trajectories a bit.
Can someone tell me how to get that zoomed out cannon view cuz when im shooting mine is almost like im aiming with it
Never thought I would pay attention in math class
So this is why i'm missing.... canon balls curve horizontally when shooting on the move....
I gave up after :20
Too many factors to consider, 😂
So today Phuzzy has taught us how to most effectively unload our balls...
This was like Calculus 3.... Alien language to me. 😭😂😂
Still have no idea why sometimes I fire and the ball just drops at a sharp 90 degree angle into the sea, is that just lag/server issues?
3:05 Does this apply if you're shooting the cannon on the opposite side of your turn too, or just the one on the same side?
It warmed my heart to find out that Phuzzy and Jackie are married.
Talk about a power couple!
pls help I cant even fire a cannon. Whenever I press unload it just takes the cannonball out
What are those cannons and where can I get them
Do u use W A S D or the mouse to aim cannons
My issue is I can’t use mouse to aim I seem to have to use w an d
I heard they have curved cannonballs, curved cannonballs.
Curved swords… curved… swords…
