For me the Licanius series was one of the highlights of last year, it brought me back into reading even. I haven’t read Will of the many yet, but have heard so many good things about it! Looking forward to read it!
About TBS, sorry, for me you're the crazy one :p. The connection was instant for me. I love Paige so much. I love Arcturus. I love the cast of side characters. I love the relationship dynamics and how well done they all are (the abusive relationship between Paige and Jaxon, for example). This series grabbed me and will not let me go. I love the Roots of Chaos cycle not as much as TBS, but I did hugely enjoy it and had no trouble connecting to the main characters there, either. The start is a bit of a slog with so much world building to be done there, but even that didn't bore like you're describing. But hey, tastes differ!
I felt the exact same way about N.K. Jemisin! Loved the Broken Earth series. Couldn't wait for The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms to be over. Then decided that I would try out The City We Became since it came AFTER the Broken Earth series. And it was even more of a slog for me. Just couldn't stand the writing or the story. Also, I came from the other direction with James Islington. Read The Will of the Many and I was like, "Yes, please! Love it!!" So I went straight to The Licanius Trilogy and...it just did not do it for me. Ended up reading all three books in the series but in starts and stops and by midway through the third book I was so bored and didn't care for the story at all. Just wanted it to be over.
I maintain that Jemisin's 'The City We Became' is fantastic and does a lot of work around Black anger. I was very excited to read the second book. However, even though I own it, I now don't think it's going to happen for me. Because I would have to reread book 1 and although it was worthwhile the first time, I also remember that it was very emotionally heavy, and I don't know if I have it in me to go through that again. So I might end up unhauling both books, with the second unread. I also doubt I'm going to reread Fifth Season, because that was great but just a lot of mental effort. Can't believe TJ Klune didn't get a mention in this video. I'm offended on his behalf.
Oh yes I forgot to mention that The City We Became was also great and intense. But like you I don't want to reread it. I mentioned Klune in my video six months ago so he was not forgotten hahaha! I would never!

I love all of them too but in a “this is cool” way not a “set me on fire with feelings” way. So yeah I’m crazy. I’ll take it. 😂
