- Time for the five men who have gone missing during an expedition to the Titanic wreckage in the North Atlantic ocean is running out.

The US coast guard says it has expanded the area being searched for the missing Titan submersible.
Within the last hour, rescue workers said there remains hope the five people onboard are still alive - although couldn't provide any more information on banging noises which had raised hopes this morning.

Lots of people hating on the people on board but personally i also can see the intrigue & would myself be intrested in seeing that wreckage first hand BUT the second i took a look at that sub on offer & its capabilities is where i say no thankyou theres no way im getting it that. @@badkitty333 The only person I feel genuinely sorry for is the 19 year old kid. To me, it sounds like he was only following his father and probably was peer pressured into joining him. I might also have sympathy for the pilot, depending on if he knew how unsafe the craft he was driving was. However, the CEO multiple times has disregarded industry standard safety, and the waiver that each member signed indicated just how dangerous it was, mentioning the chance of death multiple times. The red flags from the company's engineering faults, the CEO and the disregard for safety should have made them walk away, but they made a choice to do it anyway. If you're paying 250,000 to go to the bottom of the ocean, you had better make sure it's safe. I hope they're ok, the kid especially. But damn the CEO for being so careless with people's lives, and damn them for their greed by taking shortcuts just to see a wreck that has a high chance of them becoming part of it.

Well guess what Elon's rockets spend years on the test stand. The FAA and NASA checks every bolt every line of code. It took 18 months to complete certification of the parachutes for Crew Dragon. 4 years delay due to additional testing and redesigns after problems were found (one exploded on the test stand).
And Jaques Costeau.... that anyone gas the audacity to compare himself to suxh a great man. A real explorer, taking us along for the ride.
Yeah he built his sub himself. It worked for decades.
The Calypso his ship was a marvel by the time he was done with it. It also had a 2000 L wine tank.
And he was a great guy. Always generous. But when he lost his son his heart wasn't in it anymore. They were a bit rough. But they didn't put anyone but professionals on that submarine.
It's a Logitech controller for PC gaming. You can see the logo and it seems it is jerryrigged. Excellent for it's intended purpose, not for taking lives in your hands. Seeing it, would've made me turn around knowing massive costcuts must've happened. The controller, brand new, is about $50

There's risk in everything we do, but in retrospect this venture seems rather like a suicide mission.
as a former submariner in the US Navy, at the very least, there should have been emergency mechanisms in place to help locate the submersible in situations like this. There are several other factors that cannot be controlled, but locating the machine and those lives is most definitely one that can be.
Isn’t it strange how there is so much regulation in most things in life but not in the world of deep sea tourism. Crazy that Rush could legally take rich people to the deep depths of the ocean and not even have the requirement of a safe vessel that has been registered and certified.
The dude who owned and operated it was an arrogant scam artist. 4 passengers paying $250,000 is a cool million per trip. This was his get rich quick scheme and it finally backfired on him. It didn't even have an emergency flotation device on it.
They apparently had a sonar pinger that would go off in 15 min intervals to let the ship know they were ok...They havent heard the pinging since they lost contact. I think that points to power failure, but the worrying thing is they had a dead mans switch. Brackets would dissolve in seawater to drop the ballast and surface the sub after a set time even if everyone was incapacitated. I think they are either stuck under some debris or they imploded the moment the ship lost contact.
Agreed. This should have been a fundamental requisite of a safety protocol with a successfully demonstrated recovery procedure. How Rushton managed to talk those people into joining him is beyond my understanding. They are obviously not your typical everyday tourist. My thoughts go out to the families concerned and hope they are all found in reasonably good health.
I don't understand why the launch ship didn't notify authorities sooner. They waited from about 11:30 till 6:30 before they raised their concerns. Surely there would have been more regular check ins than that.
I hope for the people on board that they passed away at the time that they lost connection to the ship. Living through the past 3 days would be horrific.

For entertainment this narrative of slow suffering countdown to death is entertaining. Yes it’s morbid and thTs why we’re all intrigued.
A rescue would be wonderful. But realistically we can at least get pictures. Of the bowel filled cabin. Rescuers commentating about the stench.
I feel like that's a positive thought in this situation. If they are still alive.....we're basically watching them die slowly in real time. There is no way they're going to find this thing and even if they do find it they aren't going to be able to get it up

I think the worst part is the fact that there had been similar issues in the past with that submarine and nobody did anything. And the fact the submarine was totally unsafe, avoiding all the US law being in international waters, and still the CEO was claiming it was fine. Tempting the inevitable...
@guillediaz I bet you the management don't want them to be found. Sounds like the sub needed an update at least that they knew about for at least 5 years. The management knows that if it's found and see the sate of the sub and how it failed only to learn that the accident could very well be avoided, but if your blaging to niave customers that its up to speck and get them to sign thinking the submarine is safe when it's not. Well.... that could be a very big and ugly court case brought to them by the mourning family members.

Correct my grandfather was a Navy officer during World War Two, and he says that the ocean can be very dangerous. You have to treat like a woman, give it respect and appreciation. If not, you'll get kicked out out of the sea or worse, drowned and killed. And this is no ocean. This is the ocean that killed all those people. The icebergs been there for so long. I feel awful for those who have passed on And now five more people have lost their lives just because the seed of Titanic they should just leave it alone. Let the dead rest.

I was in a horrible car accident when I was fifteen, broke both my femurs, arms, pelvis, collar bone, hundreds of stitches. All of which was horrible, but the worst part was being trapped, I couldn’t move for over two hours, they had to remove the roof to get me out. I will never get into the back seat of a car again. I feel so sorry for them.

I’m a researcher in this industry. The technology simply isn’t there yet to have these kinds of commercial ventures…it’s always easy looking back and pointing fingers at every thing, and I have many issues with how this company approached design, but at the end of the day it’s a man with a dream and tourists with the means to support it.

The fact that all contact was lost before these men got to the bottom of the ocean, and the “pinging” that the sub puts out regularly went quiet, I honestly believe that, that sub imploded, killing all occupants even before they knew they had a leak onboard.
Not nice to think about, but a super quick and painless way to go, unlike being stuck 3800m below sea level, knowing your oxygen is running out, and with no way to contact rescue crews.
Can you imagine the therapy these men will need, if they ever make it out alive?

Some expeditions were delayed after OceanGate was forced to rebuild the Titan’s hull because it showed “cyclic fatigue” and wouldn’t be able to travel deep enough to reach the Titanic’s wreckage, according to a 2020 article by GeekWire, which interviewed the company’s CEO.
Rush seemed immensely proud to have shirked the warnings of his colleagues (both in his own company and industry at large). It’s a shame his hubris has likely cost not only his own life, but the lives of four others. It’s a greater shame the others paid him for it.
Slowly suffocating to death in a cramped tube with 5 people is a terrible way to go. I hope there was a pressure vessel failure instead and it was over in an instant :(
Suffocating isn’t painful. When the air ran out, as they breathe they create more carbon dioxide resulting to hallucinations then death. Not painful.
That’s why people put a hose into the exhaust of the car then lead it back into the cabin of the car to have this same effect.

This company and passengers are very selfish. They went down there for fun and fame. They knew it's very risky. It is like diving into the ocean when there is a category 5 hurricane and now people have to come to rescue you. Do the best we can to find those people but governments should definitely send the bill to Oceangate and passengers for the search and rescue costs. Taxpayers should not be paying for their fun and fame. Worst of all, they are putting the rescuers at risk.

if not tangled inside the wreck of the titanic and just on the seafloor it would be quite possible and easy for them to remove the front porthole and then swim to the ocean surface using the oxygen tanks aboard. i believe this is the most likely scenario and they are floating on the surface waiting to be found.
If a person decides to climb a mountain or goes sky diving and dies we feel bad but also we consider them foolish or attribute it to bad luck, but climbing into a 25 foot tin can and dropping 2 plus miles to the bottom of the sea is outright suicidal.
I don't think it's foolish. We need people who are willing to take big risks and maybe not make it home. Otherwise we wouldn't have space travel. But, it is a consequence of a decision they made. It wasn't like they were forced.

Someone had to be the first to fly a plane, ride a train, get in a hot air balloon, etc. Lots of early tests were tragic but eventually they led to better designs and now they're commonplace.

It takes around 3.5 to 4 hours to make it down to the debris field. Communication was lost after only approximately 1hr 45mins after it's descent began.
I think it imploded or had a catastrophic hull breach otherwise it would have surfaced by now, it's been almost 4 days. 😢💔 My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of all those on board.
It’s been reported several times that it takes 2 hours to reach the wreck, therefore, they were almost there when disaster struck. Probably implosion.

I believe they can tell where promising noises are coming from once they find a pattern. Three sonic buoys are set up to triangulate the point of origin. So yeah it's possible, but it must be done efficiently first (and in a hurry against time) before devoting the needed resources.

I'm upset they got into that sub to begin with. I feel terrible for what they went through. But people need to be more responsible with their choices. Their families should have stopped them.
What I don't understand is why this sub doesn't have sonar sensors and other sound equipment that sends out pings every 2-3 mins regardless of whether it's an emergency or not.
A sub going to these depths MUST have:
- sonar equipment (equipment that sends out sound pulses)
-> these should be sending out pulses ever 1m during operation
- a laser light, something that can be seen for miles on end
-> these lights should also be lit up every 1m during operation
- motors to help it maneuver and get itself out of trouble
- some sort of tether system that automatically launches if the vessel is not on surface within 24 hrs.
-> this tether should have a sonar device attached at the end of it so when it reaches the surface it sends out a loud sound pulse
Lastly, what I cannot fathom is why these billionaires, who could have financed the creation of a whole new, state of the art sub-marine using their own funds, (James Cameron had a sub marine developed to explore the Marianas Trench and it cost $10 million) would take such a risk?! DESPITE several people sounding the alarm about this company's safety practices AND several past expeditions also experiencing all kinds of technical problems.
It seems to be such a reckless venture.
And the stupid founder saying he's bent the rules in the name of innovation...like dude it's one thing to 'bend the rules' when you're ACTUALLY innovating (like using new material or better engineering techniques), it's another thing completely to ignore basic safety protocols.
It seems he was taunting the whole diving/submarine community like
"look at you fools who are so worried about safety procedures, protocols and practices. Let me show you how little you actually need to explore the ocean"

They named it Titan , not only that they were using it to visit the Titanic but Titan as the ship in the book Titan that came out before Titanic sank - 1898. Which is tremendously similar to what happened to Titanic. And probably they called it indestructible as well . The CEO called it: “Obscenely Safe”and named it Titan . There are things you just don’t mess with
Ironically, Titan was a mythological god who fought nature’s elements and lost.
It’s also 111 years since the ship sank. It’s so creepy that after all this time the titanic was still able to claim more lives.

There is not a second sub
This thing was made using store-bought parts from hardware/hobby stores. There is no checklist or anything in case of an emergency. It's pretty much, "let's hope nothing goes wrong." As for who allowed this madness, the ocean is vast. Countries "own" an amount of ocean extending from their land borders. Considering how much of the world is ocean, the "owned" amount is tiny. Outside of the "owned" areas is International Waters, where there are no rules.
I'm sure no submarine tourism company is held to the standard of needing to have a second "rescue sub" on hand in case of emergency. What made this company particularly risk-prone was the experimental nature of their design, and perhaps the lack of certain safety features that regulators would have mandated of a non-experimental craft.
(And yes, there is a crew in a mother ship--but once they lost contact with the submersible there probably wasn't anything they could do to help the situation...although they certainly could have alerted emergency services several hours sooner than they did.)

The main window of the sub was only rated for 1300 meters of depth. Titanic is at 4000. My bet is that it imploded at the point of contact loss, and that those knocking sounds are something else. In the press conference today, they couldn't even tell if the knocking was of man-made origin or something occuring naturally, like a geological or even biological thing.
Yes, after I saw this fact stated in another video, this has to be the most likely cause and outcome. Depth ratings are for a reason.

Even if they locate the Titan how would they get them to the surface on time with respect to oxygen? Also, these news briefings leave so much to be desired. It seems like they know the answer to any questions but say “I don't have the numbers or information on hand”. I really hope for a miracle! Dying in a submersible on the ocean floor knowing your oxygen is running out is a fate worse than anything I can imagine!

I agree. A lot of people think they were really stupid to take the risk, but they're still human beings and when people are in distress they have a duty to help them. Kinda distasteful to even ask that question "should they be helped or not?"
It’s not just a simple thing to rescue any submarine, let alone one at that depth. Foolhardy and arrogant to think they were safe.
As a side note, tourist subs don’t dive nearly this deep!
Agreed, save their life, let them reconsider, then you can proceed to whatever is needed to process, but right now, saving their lives are the priority.
Ruscuing them might not be possible. There are only like two ships that can go that deep, but they are not capable of lifting it all to the surface. Even if they find where it is its impossible to get to it and get it out before they suffocate.
It's not as simple as just going down there and rescuing them. They could be stuck in the debris field or carried miles away by underwater current. It could take weeks or months to even locate them. Then getting them to the surface is a whole other feat in itself. There isn't a handful of vessels that can even go that deep in the first place

This case reminds me of the poor fella who used to spelunk often and got trapped under a fallen stone, he had maybe thirty days of suffering before dying, the entirety of local america swarmed to his location but they couldn't do anything but be a hinderance and when they got somewhere with a rescue, something always happened to set them back

The unfortunate truth is that the best technology we have is completely incapable of mounting time-sensitive underwater rescues at even half this depth. These kinds of rescue operations are hopeless and they know it. Everyone still tries because... it doesn't feel right to sit around and say "impossible" even if it is the truth. Hopefully the sub managed to surface and just needs to be found, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

How salty some of these broke people are. There’s a 19 year old on that sub, a mother is likely going to lose her son and her husband at the same time. The inability to show any compassion and think about this on a human level is worrying.

The lack of space inside that thing is horrendous. How claustrophobic for one person let alone five. Not even a seat, no toilet, ONE window for five people. Best case scenario their deaths were instant and they didn’t know a thing. Any other scenario is harrowing to imagine.
