A ridiculously talented band! They were teenagers when they hit it big and were still in their teens, or really early 20s here! Sadly drugs ruined the life of the guitarist, Paul Kossoff, and contributed to an early death but he's still regarded as an all-time great! What could have been... The bassist, Andy Fraser (15 for the band's first album and still in his teens here) was one of the best I've ever heard! The singer, Paul Rodgers, is one of the GOATs of rock vocalists. Easily top 5 and arguably higher! He and the drummer, Simon Kirke, went on to form 'Bad Company' who enjoyed huge success in the mid to late 70s. He also became Queen's lead singer, after Freddie Mercury's death.

The guitarist Paul Kossoff was a huge influence on the guitarists in Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top. He passed away while on a flight to a gig after a long time abusing heroin. The bass player Andy Fraser wrote President Obama’s campaign song when he was running for President - unfortunately he also passed - from AIDS. Check out All Right Now their biggest hit. The other two members of the band singer Paul Rogers and drummer Simon Kirk formed the group Bad Company who were also hugely successful.

There were several things going on at concerts back in the days of organic rock and roll. We were watching legendary artists who honed their craft with nothing but microphones, amplifiers and insanely hard work. Concert tickets were cheap enough that we could easily see 3-4 headlining shows a month. We could line up at ticket locations around 11pm for sales that began at 7am surrounded by people we didn't know and within minutes we were having a party that ended with seats on the first three rows. Perhaps above all else, the preponderance of weed and alcohol often made for a very relaxed crowd. 😑

As a baby boomer growing up in the UK and seeing Free for the first time at the Isle of Wight concert in 1970, I can assure you there was much wild gesticulation, air guitaring, freaking out and other, shall we say, erotic activity going on in the audience, but that was an open air concert where this kind of thing was going down. However, if you look at audiences in tv studio gigs, you'll see more composure and sometimes even perplexion on audience faces. I guess tv studio audiences were given instructions by management to not be overly enthusiastic.
Even the Beatles were received with awkward reactions in some European tv studio audiences during the 60s but were greeted by screams and other hysterics during concerts.
OK, check out Free's Alright Now, Little Bit of Love, My Brother Jake.

Been listening to, and playing, music like this my entire 50 years, thank you Mom and Dad, and all the family and friends who exposed me to it.. It just illustrates to me the issue with a lot of music in the modern era. It just doesn’t have the same feel, and soul. These musicians went on stage and played what FELT good. It just has so much passion. You can tell they put all they had into it.. On a side note: Andy Fraser (bass), and Simon Kirke (drums), were and ARE one of the best rhythm sections to ever do it! Second maybe to Geezer Butler and Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) or John Paul Jones and John Bonham (Led Zeppelin). The 70s truly were the greatest era of modern music! The players were exploring new frontiers, and creating such powerful music..Rock On and On….👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼🔥🔥🔥

It was required for TV studio audiences to be still for broadcast reasons, possibly an FCC rule or something.
Also almost every TV performance due to the nature of seeing live taped shows with musical talent, they [the audience] are just regular people and not necessarily fans of the band, many don't even know who these bands are.
With talk show type shows or even music TV variety shows it is not known who the guest acts are. It is not like a normal concert where you know what you're buying tickets to. All you know is that you are getting free seats to a show for TV and have NO idea who is playing. You might know the host of the show but not who the guest is until the show starts.

These were studio performances. This was 1970. People were more inhibited and better behaved, to be blunt. And they would have been told to listen. Looking at the crowd I think that this particular form of brilliance went over their heads. It wasn't a rock concert, but a small studio with large equipment everywhere. The music then was out of this world and in clubs, concerts and festivals people would've got down. But TV was still very new. This performance..in such sterile surroundings, was just peeless.

People who listened to pop music danced, as for a prog and rock audience you wanted to take in every note, every sound. It's not that people didn't have any emotion, it was more of a cerebral thing, people wanted to take in every note. Music for the head. Of course you'd get a fair number of head bangers in their seats. It was a different time.

Poor Free. They were a good band but they broke up when Paul Rodgers went on to front Bad Company. As good as they were, they could never go on without their singer.

Many people in the UK and other European countries used to think that American audiences reacted too much.
    It wasn't seen as cool.

Live in the TV studio you are not allowed to go berserk, it interferes with sound for the broadcast!
