  • This is the first video for the Beginner Ballroom group class we teach at Ballroom Dance Chicago.
Here we have our dance instructors, Lydia and Matthew, teaching the basic steps of Foxtrot: the traveling basic and the left rock turn. This ballroom dance is named after Vaudeville actor Harry Fox in 1914. The Foxtrot originated on the roof of the New York Theatre where Harry Fox was trotting to ragtime music, which people then referred to as “Fox’s Trot”. The dance became the most significant development of ballroom for its flexible use of quick and slow steps to a 4/4 rhythm.

I have watched a bunch of foxtrot videos. That is the best explanation and demonstration of leading/following that I have seen.
