He's dedicated to that hair.
Old school, living the gimmick!
I wish we could go back to 80's Wrestling.
I started watching wrestling in the early 70s. I love hearing these stories. Thanks for all the entertainment for a lot of years.
I agree, the old school stories are some of the most entertaining stories I've ever heard and they are damn good at telling them too!
I could listen to this guy tell a story all day everyday.
One of the best intercontinental champions ever 👍😃
I was pleasantly surprised by his shoots
i agree. i never know whether he's telling the truth or lying but i could listen to him talk all day long
I loved HONKY TONK MAN. He was the best ELVIS.
Probably an Elvis fan
The htm is one of most honest talkers, I could listen to him over and over, he ain't rude or crude
HTM is a really charismatic storyteller. Love listening to him talk about all this stuff.
It's a Damm shame how the WWF & WWE worked these poor men to death and made them pay for their own plane tickets & Hotels! I swear Vince Killer McMahon will pay for all his EVIL acts putting these mem threw Hell for a $$ Dollar!!
To bad it's all lies
Honky almost kill Snakeman.
makes me want to rewatch Wrestlemania III on VHS
I’ve lived through the VHS era. Those tapes don’t hold up well over time.
You’re better off watching it on the WWE Network.
Just got WWE network. I think I’ve watched 40hrs the past week alone 😬
Yes! This!
Wrestlemania III is something i will never forget i was one of the 90k at the Pontiac Silverdome
Was it really 90K?
Awesome! Closest I’ve ever gotten to Wrestlemania was watching a show in Honolulu, Hawaii back in the mid 90’s, at Aloha Stadium. One of the best memories of my teen years. Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, Mr. Perfect, LOD and The Natural Disasters were among the guys performing, that was incredible to see live. I can only imagine what a Wrestlemania would’ve been like, especially around that time
That guitar didn't appear to be gimmicked at all. Alot of the gimmicked guitars we've seen explode are made from balsa wood, those are fragile.
Jake was using drugs for recreational purposes before Honky's Guitar Smash.
Jake may have been in pain and used drugs/self medicated which just further exasperated his drug use.
What a great heel this man was. Him and jim cornette were 2 guys that just knew how to push my buttons lol. A big fan of both these days.
Yup, I hated certain heels including HTM when I was a kid bc they sold it so well. Much respect now, hell of a raconteur too.
HTM seems to have walked away with the most brain cells out of the old boys. Not the most friends, but at least the most brain cells..
question is, how many did he have going in.
Yes on 27! F the big box scum bag CA casinos !
And still alive because most of the old school wrestlers are dead
George the animal steele has my vote on that
lmfao so true..hes pretty lucid
That guitar hit was brutal ,I don't think Jake is lying
Yep. So easily breakable that it took 6 swings at full power to break it. Such a liar.
You can definitely see that wasn't one of the flimsy ones....that was fkn brutal
For real they didn't know that it wasn't gonna break on the first try, and another thing is back then if you took time off when you had momentum was not the strategy. Back then once you lost momentum you didn't know if you'd keep it long or be able to get it back if you took time off
He might be though
Have y'all heard that noise from the guitar. That's guitar isn't fully compromise.
In another life, I could see Honky being a corrupt Sheriff of a small southern town.
"If anyone touches it, it's gonna break. But when I bash it over Jake's head, it'll barely scratch the wood!"
If you study the video, all shots of that guitar land on the back of that guitar and it starts giving instantly. The sides didn't buckle, but most of the time, that guitar was gimmicked for multiple hits, not like JJ's guitar, one hit and done.
I don't wrestle on tv, but it's hard to believe from watching the video that he hit Jake in the head and then repeatedly on the back while he was on the ground and it wasn't really breaking that well but HTM claimed if you barely touched it the wrong way it would break.. just odd lol that's all
For some reason I love watching the honky tonk man interviews
Listening to HTM here, I think the biggest killer of professional wrestlers is not only steroids and drugs, but it's the lifestyle itself. When you're talking 50 straight nights, that's insane for what these guys do. They can say it's fake all they want, but the struggle and the stories here are real. It's scripted but these guys put a LOT on the line.
egpytiankobe It's fake compettion but real stunt-work, no question. The problem was that they SOLD it as being real competition.
Matt Beeman Getting hurt doesn't make it real, it makes it rough. Learn the difference.
egpytiankobe People think that pro wrestlers develop some kind of immunity to injuries because "they can take the pain, land correctly etc," but any kind of long time abuse to the body will always lead to some permanent damage. Also, the "show must go on" mentality makes injuries much more dangerous, because injured men have to wrestle to the end of the show. That's the first thing I'd change in WWE - if a wrestler gets a serious injury, the match should be stopped, and medics should rush in, just like in any sport. I'm sure that the majority of the audience would perfectly understand this, because only the ignorant would _want_ someone to engage in a match with torn muscles or broken ribs. It's a shame that the wrestlers have to keep serious injuries a secret from the audience.
Steambull1 It's a tradition that the show must go on.
Tom Evans I know, but I'd gladly exchange that tradition for the gained benefit to the wrestlers' health and career. I know that a lot of wrestlers probably wouldn't have it any other way than it is now, because as you said, it's a tradition, and a lot of them are probably very proud about that.
You can see the fiber glass sticking in his shirt. That guitar shot was brutal.
In the late 80s, Jake was massively over......
“You’re next, Alison!” 🤣 HTM was such a good heel.
It was the stiffest guitar shot I've ever seen. Gimmicked or not.
Elias took a stiff one on Monday.. looked like painful
@@timhunt5764 At least that was in the back and not over the head like Jake's.
The edge of the guitar is undamaged, thats what anyone needs to know. Wayne is funny though.
@@kasper-3099 Who is Wayne?
@@christianhafer9819 It's Honky Tonk's middle name. For whatever reason, some fans insist on using wrestlers government names....idk why.
The 1987 slammy awards was the greatest thing the WWF ever did. Honky coming out with all the girls in the Cadillac singing The Honky Tonk man song, Jim Duggan and Harley race fighting backstage the entire time destroying everything. Rick rude doing a striptease on the stage in front of everybody with a bow tie.
That was absolutely awesome. We used to have that entire show on VHS. The feud between Duggan and Harley was classic.
Thank Hannibal it rules you post these for us for nothing, thanks for all that you do I love your channel.
I've played guitars for a very long time, and that guitar might've supposed to have been a gimmick but it wasn't. I've taken an old one myself and busted it like that but not on a person, and I promise you, that guitar wasn't ready to break open by his thumbs like he claims. The cross bracing was still in it, and the first hit would've made the guitar fall apart if it was a "gimmick". He hit him 4 times with it and it was still fairly intact. You can't fool people who have a lot of knowledge about guitars and how they're built.
That was a brutal hit with the guitar. Ain't no faking that. he him pretty hard, especially with that fiber glass cracking and Jake getting splinters too.
His feud with Savage was one of the best ever.
The guitar was not gimmicked, and you can tell just by watching the video. You can see how heavy it is.
If that guitar wasn't gimmicked, Jake Roberts would've been dead that night. It takes a full-blown, follow-through swing to break that guitar over a human, and then it would've busted Jake's head wide open.
@@Alabama1861 that's nonesense have you even held an acoustic guitar before?
@@eljaroebeukes5118 I've owned quite a few, they are not easy to break like that, unless you put some major force on them.
@@Alabama1861 exactly the point then if you rig the guitar to break , it is supposed to break safely - look at the video , that guitar did not break in a safe manner.
@@eljaroebeukes5118 it did though, if that guitar wasn't rigged, with the way he swung it, it would've bounced off of his head. To break an unrigged guitar, you would've needed a follow-through swing, and it would've killed him.
First off HTM is a legend. Thing about the guitar is if you watch that clip it tells a different story. I've got Jake's DVD and cameras don't lie. First shot, doesn't break. 2nd shot, doesn't break. 3rd shot, doesn't break. 4th shot, still doesn't break. And it never shattered into pieces like ever guitar I've ever seen used in WWF. So if it was gimmicked they didn't do a good enough job. Go watch it for yourself. Still have nothing but respect for both of them. I don't watch anymore cause it sucks but I'd love it if they were like the good ol days, 80s - Attitude Era.
*Truth*
he said "I trusted his opinion" TRUST ME TRUST meee trust meeeeee
He hit jake full force 4 times before the back finally broke off the guitar. Still the rest of the guitar was still in tact and still could've done damage.
That guitar was freaking solid
Wayne should have KNOWN better
Igor Ivanov
You’d think somebody at the company would have checked it though.
Can’t just blame the intern, the veteran officials should have known better. They were the ones who’d been around the business.
Ultimately it was their responsibility and somebody higher up screwed up via negligence.
@@solank7620 it was up to H.T.M to weaken it
I've seen the guitar incident a million times. That guitar was stiff as fuck.
John Smith It was a cheap $5 guitar, but with the back cut out and replaced with balsa-wood and varnished. Notice how only the back was broken.
A real guitar-back wouldn't break out like that.
***** Jarret'ts STILL wrestling?
Geez, he sures knows how to suck..
+Tom Evans No, hell no. that was not like other guitars. other guitar hits and the guitar just shatters into thin woodin pieces. that damn thing hit jake and barely dented. it was not a soft hit like the others.
Tom Evans I stopped reading after the first paragraph, because you're reaching. I have no idea if that hit did all the shit to Jake that he's claiming. What I was saying, and only said in my reply was that the guitar is not like they usually are. You can pull up a hundred guitar strikes and watch them shatter on a softer hit, but that shit barely dented when it hit Jake with full force.
Tom Evans prop guys would play with it? He said the boys. You know other wrestlers. this wasn't a movie set, just because it was on t.v. it's a wrestling show and it was the only guitar they had.
The fans didn't turn on him after. They already hated him
I watched the video of thm hitting Jake with the guitar. It made a thud lol. It was hilarious. It didnt break the first three shots. It wasnt till the third or forth that it finally broke. That was a hard shot.
After watching the snake pit interview you can clearly see once the back breaks off the guitar you can see all the cuts on the inside of the guitar
And yet it took three hits at full power to even deform? If that guitar was gimmicked they did a terrible job of it - it should have come apart on the first hit.
THIS STORY HAS BEEN TOLD BY JAKE & HONKY TONK...THE ACTUAL HATRED BETWEEN THESE GUYS GOES WAY B4 AND AFTER THE SNAKE PIT AND WRESTLEMANIA III
Thank you for sharing
OHHH SHIT I REMEMBER THAT I JUMPED FROM MY BED SCREAMING THAT WAS FUCKING AWESOME I WAS 16 YEARS OLD
I could listen to Honkey all day.
The guitar Honky smashed Jake with was certainly not as fragile as he makes it seem. There were no Xs or lines cut, either. It took him 4 hits to even fully break the bottom of it, and the top never broke. Gimmicked guitars explode when you hit someone, that one didn't.
THE SNAKE was awesome in the ring & behind the microphone..
Yeah, OK...
Another awsome 1
No question that the guitar was not gimmicked
you there were ya mush? get hit to did ya? penis
King George off Queen of the south is this your dad 😂
I just watched the clip. That was NOT a jarrett guitar made of balsa wood. That was fucking dangerous.
I loved the Honky Tonk and Jimmy Hart back in the day. His whole image and attitude would have served well even today especially during the Raw is War attitude era
Not his gimmick. He'd draw worse than Disco Inferno. Basically Jeff Jarret tried to revive the Honky Tonk gimmick and that flopped too. But, HTM's personality/talent you're definitely right about. He, Perfect, and Rick Martel were excellent Attitude types.
@@RedfishCarolina I'd say Jarret flopping wasnt the gimmick so much as it was Jarret himself.
So kind of why can't it be both? Maybe Honky gimmicked it as he says but it wasn't gimmicked as much as he assumed? I mean if you look at the video it looks stiff as anything. If it was gimmicked, and I think it was, it certainly wasn't gimmicked like any other guitar since.
You can watch the clip. The guitar was not gimmicked. Dont know if they knew it but it wasnt
Oddly Hannibal, laughing now at what Jake said about why he started on drugs, didn't laugh or question Jake when Jake said it in the shoot.
I think the idea that a guitar shot started Jake on cocaine is absurd. But I would question him on it during the interview, not wait until I'm somewhere else to laugh at him.
Jake was already a mess before he got into the business.
Jake was an angel before that guitar shot. 😇
Wow you guys worked your asses off thank you honky tonk
Karma came back on HTM a bit, when that guy in Canada nailed him on the thumb when they slapped guitars together.
Sorry honey tonk but I play guitar. And that was a high end well built guitar. I've watched that clip alot. It did not break. Stiff
3:40 never gets old 😆😆
The guitar he hit Jake with didn’t look gimmicks at all, that shit look like the most solid guitar he’s ever used as a weapon.
Set the new world indoor attendance record at that point.
I'm not going to say that guitar shot was when Jake started having his addiction issues, but my ass that guitar was a gimmick guitar. That thing barely broke when Jake took that head shot. HTM had to hit him like 2-3 more times just to get it to break. HTM is full of it.
🤣🤣 If you think that guitar wasn't gimmicked, then you're most likely one of the most naive people on this planet. You're acting like it was never done before...even if it didn't go perfectly, to say it wasn't gimmicked at all, is just ignorant af.
Jake did Pipers podcast recently and both of them talked some shit about HTM. Clearly do not like this guy
Koexistence13 to do
DAM I LOVED THE HONKY TONK MAN HE WAS AWESOME
HTM broke two guitars on Jake's head. One looked better than the other. Which one was supposed to have caused neck damage?
That wasn't a gimmick guitar. If you watch it you can see that the internal structure is still there after the back FINALLY chimes apart
it takes him like 4 hits to break the back off completely lol first shot looks pretty stiff ha
That was so funny on Saturday Nights Main Event in 1987 when Honky Tonk Man was descised as Kim Chee. H.T.M attack Jake The Snake from behind then Kamala belly splash Jake The Snake for the win. Then H.T.M caught everyone off guard when he took off the Kim Chee costum . It was funny.
I remember that. It WAS hilarious! MvMahon's and Ventura's commentary during that was priceless! McMahon was wondering if Kim Chee was HTM all along!
Let’s be honest... that guitar didn’t break like it was gimmicked. Jake was hit hard and that guitar stayed pretty much intact after the first hit.
Lol
@@ludaheracles7201 what are you laughing at idiot?
In tacked?
In my opinion Jake the snake would of been an great IC Champion
Na, he smoked too much crack.
That Guitar is absolutely Scored on the back. Jake Claims if was 1/2 inch thick and Fiberglassed, anyone that plays guitar knows that they don't make 1/2 inch thick or Fiberglass Acoustic Guitars - it is a Spruce top and bottom made of 1/8 inch Spruce Plywood. He also talked about how it had a "Metal Rod" that runs all the way through the middle of the guitar that should have been removes and that Cheap guitars don't have that. Well the Truss rod only runs through the center of the neck...not in to the body of the guitar and it is used to stop neck warp. He never got hit with the neck of the guitar. As a Guitarist that has smashed (out of anger) many acoustics and Electric Guitars....That Guitar was Scored with strait and cross cut lines. Pla the Video in Slow Motion and after the first hit you can clearly see the score marks. You can also see clearly once the back is busted out that it is no thicker and probably a little less than 1/8th inch thick and there is no Fiberglass at all. If there was fiberglass which is laid fiberglass cloth with a polyresin on both sides of fiberglass, it would have broken but stayed together...the cloth in the middle would be hanging it all together. Jake the SNAKE is a strait up Liar. Hope you enjoyed the Show and the Expert Analisys on Guitars and how they are made.
He's still selling the angle, great a kayfabe.
I like HTM, but on this incident he should own up to injuring Jake. I don't think it was at all intentional, probably just a massive screw up by the crew, but Jake has been pretty adamant about it, even after all this time. It took a solid five or six hits before the guitar even partially broke.
The incident in question: ruclips.net/video/cVDMiizqIBc/видео.html
Jake's side of the story: ruclips.net/video/FYER_ibPft8/видео.html
man just looking at the great Orson Welles made me think, damn Rock Newman looks like a midget version of orson lol yell
He may have injured him but he was not the reason Jake stated drugs. JKe himself admits he had been taking drugs
Why should he own up if the crew made the mistake? Dumbass
I don't know if he caused Jake's injuries or not, but he is lying about the guitar being so flimsy. Go watch the video. He absolutely rocked Jake with it and it barely cracked. Took several more shots to break it apart. That sucker was solid.
3:47 sounds like he caught himself from saying that he had screwed it instead of cutting into the guitar
It's the companies fault for providing a bad prop either way.
i believe Jake
***** Exactly. And what about the guitar? If there were 2 guitars, where is the gimmicked one that's unbroken?
REAL GUITARS DO NOT BREAK LIKE THAT.
Meanwhile, drug-users DO blame people for things many years ago that didn't actually happen. If you've ever had a drug-user in your family then you'll know how paranoid and delusional they can be, accusing you of things that never took place.
***** VERY unfortunately. The violence, the paranoid accusations, the psychopathic behavior, the excuses, the delusions of grandeur, the betrayals....Jake fit those to a T.
Tom Evans bro thats every wrestler
Jesse Torres It's a lot of them, but not all.
Jim Neidhardt was a classic case; he played for the LA Raiders and dove out of a 4th story window because he was on so many drugs, that's how he ended his football career and wound up a wrestler; then he stole Roddy Piper's daughter's purse for drug-money, that's how he got kicked out of the wrestling.
@Stephen Shuford Bullshit
What made this feud so unique -- though it's probably since been replicated quite a few times -- is that you had the "good guy" with a rather lone wolf personality -- or a snakish personality, if you will -- while the "bad guy" would often posture as if he was friendly to the audience. Well, not here. Here, Honky tells the audience to shut their filthy mouths. But as a heel, he frequently told the crowd "You're a beautiful audience".
Idk who to believe in the whole guitar thing
Its all part of the business, but Honky Tonk is Not a medical doctor or physical therapist. I have gotten injured before and kept on working or playing sports for extended periods but then all the injuries compound and as you age (even in 30s) your body can break down. I started getting serious arm/back/neck pain in 30s (I am a side sleeper but it never bothered me until I got injured a few times), I wasn't able to heal for years. I am sure if I had easy access to drugs I probably would have taken them just to alleviate pain and get more sleep, I was exhausted all the time, year after year. TBI and then CTE doesn't always show up for years, as well. The reality of it is, no matter how tough we think we are, we really aren't, bodies break down. Because of all my injuries and getting old, I got in a low speed car accident (broad sided), I was stopped but the other driving was doing around 10 MPH, even at that low speed and having seat belt on I had headaches and symptoms of whip lash for weeks.
That guitar was solid as hell. You can say what you want and chuckle all you want. Watch the video...it was solid.
He hit jake with all sides of that guitar and it didnt fall apart that good
Anyone who has had a guitar and bust one out of temper knows Jake is not lying here
Honkey is my favorite of all time .
The guitar may have been more solid than HTM is acknowledging, but the back of it is still in pieces after a few shots, even though HTM is pulling those shots.
The Snake-HTM feud lasted quite a while and Jake was wrestling for quite a while before being sidelined as he then segued to other feuds involving the Heenan Family, Ted DiBiase, Bad News Brown, and Rick Martel. More important, remember "Honky's Greatest Hits"? Every one of his rivals was getting hit with a "solid" guitar. The company didn't retire the gimmick as being too dangerous, and the other workers weren't refusing to take their bumps with it.
Randy Savage took a "solid" hit with the guitar on Saturday Night Main Event just before his big push. "Solid" doesn't necessarily mean "dangerous".
That guitar was not gimmicked. It didnt even break up.
Yes, it did. The back is completely gone at the end of the segment.
HTM held the inter cont. belt longer than a lot of people. over a year and a few months before warrior took it at SS 88. not sure it is a record but that is quite a long run
back when wrestling was great. now wwe has over saturated its product to the point where it sucks to watch..And any compititon that would force their hand to amp up the quality they buy or try to ruin fking sad...
I remember seeing Jake Roberts on Championship Wrestling from Florida in the early 80s. He was so fucked up on drugs or booze he was falling out of the ring.
I watched that show it was good entertainment for a 10-11 year old boy, I was on the lookout for someone worthy of a guitar whacking
Honky Tonk is awesome
Am just the honky tonk baby
HTM is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time
That guitar was ready to crumble to pieces.
Always loved when he hit people with the guitar.
He really kept that Elvis cut huh?
He reminds me of king chicken from duckman
Still wears hear like Elvis
That guitar was solid. Might as well been a baseball bat.
If it was a bat Jake would be dead.
He would be Kurt Angle 2002 concussion after 1st hit.
Re-watched the footage after the WWEs Most Valuable Treasures thing aired on HTM. You can SEE the scratches all along the back and inside the guitars face once it breaks. It was a gimmicked guitar, no question in my mind
Let me put a few scratches in a real guitar and bust it over your head see how you feel . HTM gave his game away when he said "it was the only one we had" so more or less if they another one it wouldnt have been used. HTM just doesnt want to be known as someone who injured another wrestler which is unprofessional .
There is no discrepancy. The guy who delivered the shot says the guitar was gimmicked enough. The guy who took the shot says it wasn't. If you felt the shot, you would probably agree with Jake. HTM didn't do anything wrong.

@@SovereignStatesman Who said it wasn't a real guitar?
Did you miss the part of the interview where they explain that they weakened a real guitar in advance of using it on the Snake?

He didnt necessarily deny injuring Jake if you listen close
He sounds like Joe Estevez :-D
3:40-3:43

Interesting stories. Don't believe any of the Alice Cooper part at all, though. Alice had been dealing with boa constrictors for years before that WM3 appearance.
I love HTM but he knows damn well that heavy ass guitar wasn’t gimmicked.
That was *NOT* a gimmick guitar. You can tell by the way it broke. Watch it on RUclips
