Thank you for taking the time to show me how to change the tail lights in my 2012 Nissan Versa. The way you explain it is very clear. Very much appreciated. God bless you and your family.
Why on earth the Nissan people designed the tail light housings the way they did, I will never know. You practically have to be a contortionist to get those nuts undone, and a microsurgeon to find the right tools to fit way down deep inside the walls of your trunk. Not to mention, the probability is very high that you will drop one of those precariously hidden nuts and lose it forever inside the wall of your car. That’s exactly what happened to me. Fortunately, I had the right size of replacement in my toolbox. But your tutorial was the clearest I have seen on all of RUclips for this particular task. I managed to change my brake light without even cursing. Thank you so much for taking the time.
It's cool they make one of the nuts easy to remove and the other one next to impossible to remove. I used a socket, the cylindrical tip fell into the car.
Thanks for the vid, my wife's 2011 Versa with 207K miles on it finally had a brake light go out, pretty impressive life outta one bulb. 😊 Oddly enough same side on her car too and I seen ur license plate bulb, same side also.... 😅😅😅
This was a great help, always great to see it, versus reading the manual...actually not even in the manual...Nissan wants you to go the dealer! I was able to complete it with a pair of pliers. though it was a tight squeeze. Thanks again!
We had one that was bucking when they changed lanes at highway speeds... Transmission had just been rebuilt... Lockup converter was going on and off... Ended up being a shorted out tail light bulb... Signal light
Thank you for this very undertsnadable and clear video. Got stopped by the state police last night, so time to swap out the police attracting tail light :-) (in case you're wondering he didn't give me a ticket, just a verbal warning... but better to NOT give the fellas an excuse to pull me over)
Thank you. After I loosened the lower nut, I used a socket extension with a regular 10mm socket on one end & a rare earth magnet on the other end to turn the nut off by hand & get it out without dropping it.
I shoulda done that but was in a hurry as the cops gave me a conditional ticket that turned into a $165 fine if I didn't get it fixed and right back to them to show them it was fixed. So in a hurry I used a socket with no magnet and now when I drive I can hear the nut sliding around in the car that fell off... Ughhh. Gotta get a magnet out now in hopes I can fish it outta the wall of the car.
You just did mine, it worked with a regular 10mm socket for the lower nut. And a 10mm wrench for the upper nut. Oh, the lower nut will drop it inside the bumper :)
Thanks to the OP for the video but yes - PLEASE NOTE - for my 2012 Nissan Versa Hatchback, I needed to use (purchase) a deep well 10mm socket and a 10mm wrench for the upper nut as noted. Once I had these two tools, it really did only take about 10 minutes (or less) to complete the job. If you try to change this light bulb with some needle nose pliers or just a regular pair, sure you *can* do it, but boy howdy it was easier with the right tools.
I could not visualize how to do this from the instructions in the owner's manual, which makes no mention of the tools needed, nor the size of the nuts involved. Thanks to your video, it took me less than 10 minutes to change the bulb.
It turns out that the nut was virtually sealed onto the screw so as I turned the screw came out with the nail. Now I've got to figure out how to keep the nail, screw, light and car together. Changing my brake light was a defining moment in my life.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2007 Versa hatchback. The 3rd brake light - the top on on top of the rear windscreen appears to be a completely sealed unit. Any ideas?
The light itself is listed as a sealed LED unit, so assuming you can buy one of those you just need to remove the upper hatch door trim, disconnect the one electrical connector, and it has two nuts holding it on the door. Installation is the reverse of that sequence, and the service manual notes to ensure a good seal from the light to the door to prevent water leaks.
Thanks for the video. I am replacing the whole taillight assembly, and I am trying to figure out how to separate the power connectors. Any advice? Advice for people who do this: use a magnetized wrench or just be careful when removing the 10mm nuts, or they will drop down inside.
@@BasinMotorsports i dropped the nut when i was putting it back in. Went to lowes and bought another 10mm nut but it didnt fit. Any tips on finding the right nut. Thanks
@@BasinMotorsports Thank you.. I got it replaced without dropping the nut (dang on Nissan for making the access difficult). Little tip. My same tail light is out 🤔 I wonder if this is a common issue. I wish they made that black plastic piece detachable so you can get your fingers in there to pull the bulb out, I know it's not hard to just pull the whole thing out but it would just be convenient
I haven't seen the inside of a Nissan Versa Note to say yes or no. The structure is similar, so I would suspect the process is similar. Check for the small covers at the rear to check if they are there.
I was unable to find the upper nut on my 2011 versa.... There were two nuts but they were covered with White plastic covers and those where attached to other wires. I wish you showed a close up of yours
They are all covered with plastic covers on the trim panel (take those off), and then the harnesses are clipped to the studs. Just pull them off of the studs. Then you can remove the nuts.
Tried my 2012 Nissan Versa has 2 screws on the top and 1 one the bottom. The screw on the top inside does not have a nut, only the white plastic clip for the electrical. After I remove the 2 nuts the light assembly will not come off.
You should be able to remove the trim on the inside above the window. the light housing is held on by two nuts. Remove those nuts and then you can take the housing off the door and flip it over to get the bulb sockets out.
The gaskets on the studs can bond to the car over time. Be patient with it and keep trying to move the light around. Up down side to side. It will eventually wiggle loose. You can also try to gently pry the light loose between the housing and metal body.
Good video, but you need to be more specific on how to remove the panel from the inside of the vehicle instead of showing it already been removed. The only reason for me saying as mentioned above is I am not good with cars and I would need a little more info. I am trying to help my grandma with her taillight, instead of her paying $99 an hour to get it replaced. Other then that very good video. Thanks
@@BasinMotorsports No, I don't want to break the darn thing. I was going to watch my hockey game then look for a different video and I hope I can find one that will show how to do it without breaking it.
@@David-ih1ek There should be a small cutout on each panel for a small screwdriver or a plastic pry tool to stick into and pop out. Don't worry about breaking them. They are pretty strong.

It's good practice to avoid touching any bulb, but the headlight bulb is the only one that will typically burn out because of the oils in your hands. Most bulbs don't stay on and build up heat like the headlight bulbs.
You know what bothers me is if they'd just designed this better they could have made a slightly larger access panel and you could just reach in and unscrew the bulb...
