A Saucerful Of Secrets - Pink Floyd - Richard Wright - Farfisa Compact Duo Organ Part

  • I am not a keyboard player! I am a guitarist who happens to like keyboards. So much so that when I first heard Pink Floyd's Ummagumma, I decided that I wanted a Farfisa Compact Duo. Like the one on the back of the album cover. I loved what Richard Wright did with it. It's a qurky little instrument but he used it to the full and the combination of Wright's unique style with the Farfisa was such an integral part of the Pink Floyd Sound.
It is a year ago today (15/9/09 BST) since Richard's unexpected death, so here is my personal tribute to him: his own organ piece played on a Compact Duo. It is, after all, a requiem and shows just how important Richard's massive contribution to Pink Floyd was.
Chords for main part: B min, A Maj, E Maj, F sharp Maj, D Maj, G Maj, E Maj, A Maj, F sharp Maj, B min, G Maj, F sharp Maj, E min, D Maj, F sharp Maj, F sharp Maj. Repeat all as necessary ending on B Maj.
Special thanks to alien8ted for filming the event and to Phil Carrington for encouragement.

My Farfisa Compact Duo is plugged into a little Frontline preamp sitting on top of the organ and then into an Alesis Microverb Mk1. Then the stereo outputs from the Microverb go into a Custom Hiwatt 100 (DR 103) head into a WEM Starfinder 4x12 and a Custom Hiwatt 100 combo. The Hiwatt/ WEM stack is visible on the right and the Hiwatt combo is briefly visible on the left.

Thank you! How time flies! I plugged the Farfisa in for the first time for a couple of years the other day. It was a bit poorly! All the switches were dirty and it sounded a bit wheezy. After a while of rocking the switches it perked up a bit with only one note that was out of tune. Time for its service. I'm going to take it to the same technician who has worked on it ever since I first got it in 1988!

We shared a room at the time and used to turn the lights out and listen by candle light. One night we were listening to Ummagumma with a candle in a bottle. Just as the scream started on Careful With that Axe, the candle disappeared into the bottle, plunging us into darkness! For a moment we were a bit freaked out until we realised what had happened! @nickhirst999  8 лет назад

      +Felipe Martins
Ha! Lol...I'm sure you'll do a very good job too! The way the Farfisa works is that each note can play up to 3 octaves plus a fifth up from the top octave. So if I play middle C then the 8' tab plays that note. If I put the 16' tab on, then it will play an octave below and if I switch on the 4' tab then it will play an octave above. Therefore I can play up to 3 octaves with just one note. It's impersonating a pipe organ. The magic of the Compact Duo is that you can add the 2+2/3 tab which plays a fifth above the top octave. So in the part where I am just playing the upper manual, I have the 16' and 4' and 2+2/3 tabs on so each note has the note two octaves apart and the fifth added to the upper octave. I think you'd need a 3 or 4 oscillator synth to do that.
      All the best!

It's very difficult to hear exactly what is going on on the original Ummagumma version as the whole live album is soaked in studio reverb which was added later in order to cover up a multitude of flaws in the original live 4 track recording! What I did was to reverse the phase of my CD player output which cancels out all the drums and bass and reverb, leaving just the organ and guitar! Thanks Paul, that was my intention. Rick knew exactly how to get those tones out of the Farfisa. I'd really like to find good footage of Rick playing the Farfisa but although there is footage it never lingers long enough on what he's doing. Even the close ups on "Pompeii" don't show the settings on the organ. Perhaps Rick didn't want to share his (Saucerful of) secrets with the world!

Thanks! I first heard the Ummagumma version when I got it for Christmas as an 8 year old in 1977! A couple of months later I saw Pompeii at the cinema and was blown away! I started learning the guitar at exactly that point as well as having piano lessons from a church organist! I always hoped he'd let me loose on the church organ but he never did! I've always wanted to see Pompeii at the cinema again but it's never been on since then.
    All the best!

Thank you for your lovely comment! The difficulty I have with keyboards is getting my hands to play 2 different parts simultaneously. With this piece it's a case of holding chords with one hand and playing the melody with the other. Richard is of course, improvising on the spot! I have a few videoes on my channel where I play some of David's guitar solos which may be of interest.

Thanks Skaliwag. I was advertising for Farfisas: wanted, back in the mid 1980s when they were right out of fashion. I had a red Compact for a little while and couldn't work out why it didn't sound quite right. As you say the 2 2/3 stop makes ALL the difference!

Thank you, satyavida. To me, "More" is a TRUE Pink Floyd album. By this, I mean that each member of the band contributed EQUALLY to the end result. It was recorded very quickly at Marble Arch Studios in London.
On Cymbaline, Richard is using the same Farfisa Compact Duo that he used on Ummagumma (live). That's the only keyboard he uses on Cymbaline. It is also the ONLY keyboard (organ) he uses on the live album from "Ummagumma".
You know the spirit of the piece!

Thanks! I like your Vox organ thumbnail!
The Farfisa Compact Duo which I used on this video still lives in the corner of my living room as it has for the last 22 years! It has lived here for half my life as indeed have I! It is actually a few years older than I am! I bought it in 1988 when I was 19! The organ itself is a good few years older than me! Every time I open it up and repair it, something else goes wrong! I reckon that organ's nearly 50!
    It will survive me!

  • @nickhirst999
    @nickhirst999  14 лет назад +1

Thank you, soarornor. I've had one engineer work on my Farfisa since I bought it in 1987. He rebuilt the power supply for me and over the years has rectified any prolems which have occurred. He is not a keyboard specialist but IS a specialist in electronic musical repairs insofar that he can fix anything from valve amps to keyboards to FX pedals etc. The "weak" part in the Farfisas is generally the capacitors, though mine must be nearly forty years old! I can supply diagrams if you need.

Far Out! been watching this video thru the last couple of years. I am a drummer and a guitar player and a few other instruments Bedroom rocker as my wife J$J$ would say. never tried piano or keyboard(my goal) Recently traded an expensive snare and purchased a Novation mini nova synthesizer at the guitar center (I thought it would be a waste of money But I goofed around on that mini nova and within 2 weeks I play it more than the snare. It was worth the trade(even tho I think Guitar center could have gave me more$ for the snare besides the point! bought a little chart that shows piano chords. I appreciate you showing what chords are in the song! Even tho the mini nova will not even come close too the Farfisa I will be able too play some of the chord progression The synthesizer does have some cool effects. Anyway awesome video and I could always sing the words too the song(LOL) Celestrial Voices.

I am a guitar player too,but nothing can beat old analog synths, something about them is like an out of body experience in the hands of the right player. Good thing for plug ins! However they are not as warm and not quite exact in their sound. Cheers!

Thanks! Bear in mind the Farfisa is replicating organ pipes, so as with a pipe organ, stops are labelled "flute" etc but don't sound like a flute!
Low rumble from 0 to 0:20 is every note on the bass octave. @ 0:18 the upper manual is flute 8' trumpet 8' & 2 2/3'
@ 1:10, the green tabs are switched on producing a more mellow tone. The octaves are 16' 4' & 2 2/3'
Lower manual at 2:08 is dolce 8' & principale 8' and at 2:54 ottava 4'
@ 3:58 4' is switched off on upper manual
