@grimreapers - Thanks for the video guys! Cap, I got a weird request, could you reenact the final attack mission (scene) of the movie Top Gun Maverick? I am sure there are aspects of it that you can't, but it would be fun to see what the Grim Reapers could come up with!

One thing the Sim cannot reproduce and model is the surprise and horror the Axis fighter would have felt when their wingmen were blowing up from an unknown missile or the shock at seeing fighters jets! I think the shock value would only last a couple of days. From a dogfight perspective a warbirds slow speed and maneuverability would eat a jet alive. Granted of the jet doesn't want to be engaged, it would just run off and the warbird would never catch it.

      4. Catapult launch failure.
      5. Cap lost fuel just short of the carrier.
      6. Carrier landing.
      7. Carrier landing.
      The air force losses were:
      1. Friendly fire.
      2. Bad spawn position.
      3. Some crash?
      4. Friendly fire.
      5. I think the A-10 was taken out by enemy fire.

Hello Reapers, I'm a huge fan of your channel and I particularly enjoy your WWII scenarios. So much in fact that I found a mission just for you. In 1944, Jimmy Doolittle launched an airstrike, code named Operation Thunderbolt, on the German super fortress, Fort Driant, with P47s. The mission was to destroy the fort, but they were unsuccessful. Later the fort was placed under siege by General Pattons forces until its eventual Surrender. Today, the fortress still stands. My question is, what WWII era weapons would the Grim Reapers choose and, also, what would it take using today's technology to destroy such a behemoth? I would really love to see you guys run this scenario in gameplay on DCS. Anyway, thank you for the videos and I'll be looking forward to more WWII scenarios.

Well Cap I love these "what if" scenarios but to be fair the comparison of the USN to the USAF is apples and oranges. The Navy would have deployed and been on time to stop the Germans. The Air Force would have gotten there weeks or months after Britain had already lost and possibly invaded by the Germans. USN 1987-2008.

I have a few questions about the German Forces at Dunkirk. One is did they have AA Units there? Also where did Cap get the battle formation and German Units and weapons for the battle? How accurate is it? Also one more thing about the A-10 I just have a feeling they really are not using it properly. I could be wrong but something feels so wrong about all of this and how the tactics and weapons are being used.
To be quite honest there is no coordination of sorties or even tactics/strategies being used. More or less its pick a weapon fly up and try to kill things. Then say because of this or that its no good to use this or that. A weapon is just a tool of war. Stupid to send in ground support weapons without taking out gaining air superiority and have effective cover. An example of miss use of weapons was seen in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Ill use of artillery fire to suppress Iraqi AA units lead to Apache Gunships attack failing. When in a latter mission both flanking the AA and use of artillery to suppress the AA lead to a far more successful raid. So if there was AA sites cluster bomb or bombing of the AA sites should been used to let the A-10s run free while supported by air cover.

1 F35 staged above max altitude for F190 and 109s woth 10 F15s carring medium/long range missles and firing them after leaving the runway in the UK?
The F35 can also track and cotrol all incoming ordinance for that as well atleast thats what the US military claimed

"What If" mission proposal: May 1982, the _Veinticinco de Mayo_ instead of carrying A-4Q Skyhawks (which she was unable to launch in a "Banzai Night" attack on the British Task Force), was carrying an air group of A-1 Skyraiders. Could they even get into the air, let alone make a marginally effective (if suicidal) attack?
Special credit to try it with aerial torpedoes, or some kind of psychobilly frankenstein Exocet carriage.
(I apologize for not at least running the initial takeoff setup through a flight sim to check if it'd work-no free time to kludge together a workable analogue for a carrier takeoff, with catapult, but at a lower ship speed than what's hard-coded into X-Plane.)

Caught you complaining about a lucky cannot hit on your F-16. Long ago, 1987, I was near Luuq Somalia. The Oromo Liberation Front had a farm just upstream from the refugee camps. They asked me to visit and review their irrigation system. I noticed they were using parts from a MiG fuselage as a splash pad. During the Ethiopian Somali war, a pair of MiG's took a run at the Luuq bridge. One was shot down by the WWII style anti-aircraft cannon of the Somali Army. I could see the hole punched just behind the cockpit. I assume they targeted the lead aircraft and the second ran into the shell.

DCS has an issue where modern firepower is much less effective than it should be, when dealing with certain older aircraft. I've seen the same thing on other's dogfighting videos, when doing modern vs WWII, or older, again, various select aircraft, not universal.

  • @CX0909

The one thing all these "WHAT IF" scenarios never include is that today's military cannot function without satellites. You don't just send one F 22 with one bomb to Berlin to kill Hitler and end the war. The support infrastructure is what enable these powerful weapons to do what they can do. Doesn't matter how badass an A 10 is if it cannot find the target without satellite communications. Without satellites all combat aircraft would be haplessly wandering the skies and only just as effective as WWII combat aircraft. So when we think an AH 64 or an M1 or an F 15 EX could do so much more there'd need to be eyes in the sky telling them where to go and what to shoot. We have effectively evolved from spray and pray to sniping. Why send 900 B 17's and B 24's when one B 1 could do the trick with a single laser guided munition?

When the F-15E is damaged especially when a wing is broke/shot off the server registers it as a kill or something similar. It puts the plane in an odd state, this consistently happens to me. You can still fly pretty well on 1 wing and even continue semi accurate iron bomb runs but yep, no map icon, things get weird.

My question is whether your S400 model has been too effective inside DCS, since shooting down 4 ATACMS wouldn't seem too impossible for an S400 site. Is it possible the S400 has been overestimated?

I've seen a bunch of these what ifs and sure the shear destructive power would be overwhelming but what about day 2, back then was there compatible fuel, also ground power for engine start, would it be available? how about the runways, are they robust enough to handle a B1 fully loaded and long enough? Replacement weapons, were bombs back then compatible with the modern shackle arrangements, also what about the drop characteristics of older bombs. This'll win any battle but Logistics wins Wars.

Modern technology is great at reducing friendly casualties and achieving objectives but in financial terms it's a disaster. You could probably build, maintain, arm and crew a WW2 fighter plane for much less than the cost of the missile a F18 would use to take it out. Likewise bunkers are just a large mass of concrete and rebar. You'd go bankrupt way before the enemy if you started with the same resources.
