Using a vintage lens on a digital medium format camera - Fujifilm GFX 50S II + Mamiya RB67 🎞️ 📸

- Today, I’ll be adapting my vintage film camera lenses onto a modern, digital medium format camera! 🎞️ 📸 Despite there being an odd 50-year difference between the 90mm lens for the Mamiya RB67 and the new Fujifilm GFX 50S II, you can still get some beautiful results out of this lens (if you don’t mind manual focus 😉). With the help of my friend Louis, I'll be recreating the same photo I took 4 years ago on this lens to see the differences on a modern camera. Enjoy :)

Less than 1,000 subscribers? I hope you plan on a youtube career, because I think the content, editing and awareness in this video alone warrants it!
Great video! Would love to see more of your post production process. I love the look you achieved with the digital photo.
Incredible video! This is such an interesting concept.
I didn't realize you had less than 300 subs until I went to the comments. You earned my follow. I'm confident your channel will catch some traction soon with this high quality content.
Great video mate! I’m thinking about getting an adapter to use my Mamiya 7 lenses on my gfx 50s. Watching this has been really helpful
Excellent video dude, I like those hybrid camera experiments
Absolutely phenomenal video! I managed to get my hands on the 55mm and I’ll be pairing it with the same camera. So it’s nice to see a video of these two things working together with good explanation behind it.
The video I was looking for exactly! I’m sold for getting a Fotodiox and use my RB’s lenses on my GFX. Thanks a lot!
James, great content and love your style - exact replica of you in person. Thanks for today and will be back! Mash
Great vid! Wonderful to see our adapter in action!
My pleasure!
Beautiful work man
Everyone’s dream photography teacher ✨
Also. The Lanes tee. Bristol ✊🏽
That lens is a BEAST!
You deserve so many more subscribers!!! Keep up your hard work!
how the hell do you only have 233 subscribers?! awesome video man
Used a friend's gfx50r on a trip. The shot I took was pretty much pitch black we edited it and it was fully recovered. That blew me away lol
Oh my god, I’ve been trying to get this adapted for this exact lens for AGES to use with my 50s!
I had to get my adapter shipped from B&H New York 🇺🇸 over here to the UK 🇬🇧 as it was the only one I could see 😅 I wish you luck! :)
great video
This is super cool! Curious what your favorite stocks were to shoot on you RB67
VERY good video, should u advice 50 S II for slow wedding shooting?
Thats a beast tho. Tnx for the video. I have a handful of GFX lenses that I really need. But there are always special lenses you do not use a lot. Adapting would be better for those.
Hi James, so glad I came across this video! As I fitted Pentax 6x7 lens onto my Fujifim gfx 50r, the camera just wouldn't let me fire the shutter (viewing is fine), however as soon as I switch back to its original lens it works fine - is there any setting on the camera I should be careful with when adapting a vintage lens? Also, liked your explanation on dynamic range 👍
Hello! Glad you liked the video :) make sure you select "Shoot without Lens" in your camera settings and this will let you take photos with non Fujifilm lenses. A quick Google should let you know exactly what page to look at in your camera settings to find this.
Hi, thanks for this video. Just one question ...do you get vignetting using the RZ lens on Fuji GFX? Thank you
I'm so glad you liked the video! That's a great question. Luckily, the Mamiya RZ67 lenses were designed to cover a much larger film negative (56mm x 69.5mm) than the GFX sensor (43.8mm x 32.9mm). This means you won't get any vignetting with those lenses on your GFX camera :)
is the IBIS working on 3rd party lens?
Hi ! I have a question for you , I have the same adaptater for my rz lenses and my GFX 50s but I can’t change the aperture … I can only change iso and speed. Is it normal ? Thank you
Hello! I’d recommend watching this tutorial very carefully to make sure everything is aligned correctly when attaching the lens to the adapter (go to the 1 minute mark). ruclips.net/video/2wcrj_EXpic/видео.html
The apature control ring is quite sensitive so when focusing you might accidentally brush past it, disengaging the apature controls. If this happens, rotate the apature control ring as shown in the video (you don’t need to detach the lens or camera) to re-engage the aperture controls, you’ll hear a click and you’ll be able to change the apature blades again. The first time I used the adapter I was accidentally turning the apature control ring instead of the focusing ring which gave me the same issue but it is a quick fix when it happens.
I hope this helps!
Wow... You Sold me on this Fujifilm Camera, and this Idea, as I have an RB 67 sitting here in a Bag, that I haven't used in Years...
(I have used my M645 1000s though more recently)
I wonder how Those Lenses from the M645 would work on this Camera... It might be closer to the Sensor size.
Do you know if they make an Adapter? I have 3 lenses for the RB67, but 5 lenses for the M645.
To Remind people what the "RB" stands for... it has a "Rotating Back", so you can do Vertical 6x7 cm shots without turning the Camera from it's normal Waist Level.
A Nice Big Negative or Slide, on my Favorite Fuji-Chrome 50 Slide Film. Way Better than anything Digital, if you have your own Darkroom for Color as I still do.
(Proper Chemistry keeps getting harder to find for Color Film and Prints though.)
I do have a 4800 DPI Film Scanner, and a 6x7cm Color Slide works out to be something like a 360 megapixel Image...
You should see 4x5" sheet film scanned. Totally Insane! ... I have yet to scan an 8x10 inch sheet film.
Forgot to mention, I also have Large Format View Cameras for 4x5 inch and 8x10 inch Film... and a few lenses for each.
So, Now you have me wondering if anyone makes a "Tilt Shift" type adapter, for this Fuji that will take these lenses on a Horseman Board or Similar.
Thanks So Much for Brightening up My Day!
I see you also Like my Favorite Manfrotto Tripod... Very Light, Strong and Inexpensive... Most bang for the Buck for sure, and Smart Design.
Oh.. BTW... I realize that 4 years is a Long Time for someone as Young as you... a Blink of an Eye for someone as Old as me... lol
(you will see what I mean as you get older.)
Nice Video! ... Great Job! ... Best of Luck to you with your RUclips Channel...
Check out FotoDiox’s website to see if they do a 645 lens adapter! You’d definitely get a image closer to the original crop factor on 645 👍🏻 Thanks for the comment :)
@@james-greenhalgh - Thanks for the info, and your wonderful video!
I think I am now ready to buy these.. stocks are back. Just a couple of questions, if I may,-- how much light do you lose with this adapter in between the body and the lens? A stop and a half perhaps because it is a long tube, sort of..
Hello! I’m afraid I borrowed a GFX for this video so I don’t have it on hand anymore to run any tests but it is a good question. I hope you can find an answer soon!
@@james-greenhalgh 😇
Hi there, I know this is a bit too late.. but I was wondering if you still remember the aperture you used when taking the close up picture of your friend? His whole face is so sharp… I reckon you didn’t use the lowest aperture?
Hiya! Great question, I'm pretty confident I shot it at around f/5.6
thanks so much! @@james-greenhalgh
How do you focus? Does the adapter have a helicoid or something? Cheers
Hello! Yes, the adapter has a helicoid built in for focusing.
This is the amazing part. I didn't even imagine I could use my rb67 lenses on gfx!! I will definitely try it @@james-greenhalgh
may i ask how you film your video for youtube?
No problem!
Camera: FujiFilm X-T4
Lens: FujiFilm XF16-55 f/2.8
Editing on Adobe Premiere Pro
@@james-greenhalgh what kind of file you export?
Do vintage lens give vintage effects?
Keep going.. I am late for the party. The Fotodiox site says " sold out" .. Well, may be for good?
I have about three RZ lenses and I slept when they came out with it. The folks around me popped in .. " spending $250 for this? Better shoot film.. and I succumbed ..
I got mine shipped from B&H New York, I’d check to see if they have any 👍🏻
Thank you.. I checked .. they too seem to have run out of stock
