It is amazing! I like to remind my students that similar techniques are used to create the human insulin that about 3 million Americans rely on every day :)
It is always a pleasure. I’m glad you learned from it. I have hundreds of other microbiology and anatomy videos. Let me know if there are any topics you would like me to cover :)
Yes there are. That is one of the weaknesses of this test. You would need to do further tests to be certain that there are actually coliform bacteria (like E. coli) present
Here is some more detailed information about the process. It will definitely answer your questions :) microbeonline.com/probable-number-mpn-test-principle-procedure-results/
Dear Dr.Frank, when a same sample is analysed in duplicate at the same time interval and results obtained are 18MPN and 54MPN ...which shall be considered as a result and what is the acceptance criteria for duplicate testing

Hi Sara. That is a good question. They are both good tests, but I have never used the dry test on water. I use MPN for water samples and dry for food and lab materials. I will have to do some digging and see what I come up with :)
Government agencies would say that anything above 0 is too much. But, I am from a small farming community where some well water does have coliforms in it. I would warn someone not to drink the water until the issue is solved, but some people still drink it and seem fine. This could be because there are coliforms that don’t cause issues. They are basically just a rough marker for E. coli
Hey Barb. I was definitely NOT in the Olympics lol. They are medals I earned when I won my 2 NISOD Teaching Excellence Awards. Oliver and I like to use them as Olympic medals when we race each other, though :)

Hey Dr. O. Are there other bacteria that will ferment lactose and cause the color of the tubes to change?
Yes there are. That is one of the weaknesses of this test. You would need to do further tests to be certain that there are actually coliform bacteria (like E. coli) present

is the mpn for drinking water 0? if it exceeds to 0 is it not potable anymore? let's say 7 mpn?
