Great quick tips on growing your own hay. The best investment in tools we've ever made was buying an Austrian bush scythe (if you're doing only hay only I'd recommend a grass scythe) to hand cut. Scythe cuts areas you just can't mow like our first farm that was on rock hills. It can easily cut small saplings (if you go with a bush scythe) & it doesn't throw stuff back up on you like weed wackers, & it runs on easy, physical labor. You can do the box method to stack it or simple pile up a nice roll and tie it. Make sure it's completely dried in the sun (but still tinges of green - 2 days in sunny weather should do it raked loose 3 times) before mounding & storing in a place where it can have good air circulation. You can even store it loose if you like if you have a nice area to store it - I carry mine in apple baskets when I use it. - There are fantastic videos out there on scything and haying by hand. Thanks for all the helpful tips on raising rabbits!

I'm new at rabbits. I got these to learn about rabbits and primarily for the manure. Just wanted to let you know your videos have been a tremendous help. There is so much bad information out there on any topic really. It's great to find the sites that I feel I can trust. Thanks
The hay info was so HELPFUL started growing my own hay for our pet chinchilla but I had no idea how to dry out the grass. I never thought about bailing it 🤯🤯🤯. So helpful thank you!!
When I welded, I picked a song that fit my movements in a smooth rhythm. One could probably find a song to use with the sythe rhythm. You don't tire as easy.
With your scythe. If you hold a rolled up magazine or newspaper under your pulling arm, you will gain a cleaner cut. Keep nose of scythe up a little. Also only cut approx 1-2 inches of grass max. But love the channel and what your doing. I'm in Sweden. Keep up the good work
The idea of the scythe is to rotate from the hips and a light dance with feet, drawing the left hand close and around your body and the right or extended arm is only there to lift the nose and support the blade. It's your left or back arm that does the work/cutting/sweeping.
@@llewelyn9084 gotcha so are you're not making hay as much as your mowing the lawn. It that right? That sounds much easier than trying to cut tall stuff. It's really tough to swing a scythe through tall grass. As you probably know it drags on the back swing and is pretty tough to follow through. Heck of a work out. Thanks for the advice. I'll try to remember that.
@@TheRabbitryCenter long grass is easier to cut. Sorry I'm not explaining my self correctly. I'm talking about how far in you place the nose of scythe into grass. So with each sweep of scythe your only cutting an inch or so of grass. The grass can be feet hight.

Grass Hays-Timothy,Orchard, Bermuda or a mix are all awesome for rabbits. Alfalfa is good too but don't feed it too much because its high in protein and calcium.
Is it necessary to separate the manure from the urine? I've just been dumping my litter pans in a large pit, but I'm wondering if the urine could make the manure not good for fertilizing?
No. that's for selling or trying to avoid grass and weed growth but when your soil is good you 'll always have to take care of the little weeds that sprout. I just get 'em early and try to spend 5 minutes a day per raised bed. We have 7 so it's a 5 minute daily chore. You can simply add everything to your compost pile and turn it daily and you'll have terrific compost for your garden or any thing you want to give a boost. If I separate it's because I want to add more manure than hay to something or if you're selling manure you certainly want it to be clean for your customers.
There's a lot of conflicting advice out there. I wouldn't recommend feeding any grass or greens to a rabbit under 3-4 months. Only dried grass or hay. Also I'd only give greens about 2-3 times a week to an adult rabbit. Its like desert and can cause negative effects on your rabbits digestion. A lot of people enjoy spoiling their rabbit and end up doing more harm than good.
This was an area by my bees that was a field of natural grass. But you can grow a grass hay of your choice like Timothy. But it helps to water it.
