  • Two of the most decorated surviving veterans of D-Day join Tom Brokaw for the third episode of our series, 'Conversations with Our Greatest Generation.'
Major General John Raaen, a U.S. Army Ranger who landed at Omaha Beach is joined by Ray Lambert, an Army medic who arrived with the first wave of American troops. Both men were awarded the Silver Star for their actions. These two heroes epitomize the meaning behind 'The Greatest Generation,' in our conversation led by the man who coined the phrase.
'Conversations with Our Greatest Generation' is presented by the United States of America World War II 75th Commemoration, and will be released weekly throughout the fall of 2020. Stay tuned for new episodes, as we share the stories of our greatest living heroes of the Second World War.

The characteristics these gentlemen possess are indeed rare qualities and are needed more today than ever before. I loved the comments by the general on what he thought of Americans who carry a nazi flag.

Thank you for your fine testimony and recounted events. All the sacrifices you’ve made and the sacrifices of the lives by men and their families.
We owe so much to all these fine veterans for our freedoms we have.
Especially liked the topic of your speaking of leadership.
And I can certainly understand that you have always remembered the trauma you experienced. Thank you for continuing your productive lives, supporting yourselves and family.
I am a retired Funeral Director, and have served 100’s of veterans families and funerals. Always my total respect to the veterans and families, the various VA support groups, VFW and American Legion, Patriotic Riders and others.
    My heartfelt thanks.

On this Veterans Day I salute my Uncle Nicholas “Nick” Janosco, home of record Minneapolis, Minnesota, killed in action aboard the New Orleans-class heavy cruiser USS San Francisco (CA-38) during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, 12-13 November 1942, in World War II.

I knew Joe Foss, read his book, and went to his funeral in 2003. Tom Brokaw is in the book and spoke (remotely) at the funeral. Mr Brokaw is in many ways a product of his relationship with Joe Foss and gave a remarkable eulogy for Joe. The reputation of the media has been sadly diminished to new lows daily but Tom Brokaw honestly knows and admires the "greatest generation". Mr Brokaw will always be admired for his work bring stories of heroism - sacrifices made for love of country, delivering a future of freedom to Americans, and all the world.

I am terribly despondent that this unselfish generation or great Americans is drastically dwindling before our eyes. Soon they will all be gone and lets pray that our future generations to come will have an interest in this unique generation as we do. All they will see is videos and won't have the opportunity look them in the eye.

No offense but, there’s no way that if you switched the roles of all the men who fought In WWI and WWII with women, they could never have carried it out. And that goes for all wars, women are not built the same physically or mentally to handle these situations.
