I’ve bought one or two of those and I didn’t want to just look at them but I wanted to know who did the work. Too steep of a neck angle on that SG for me. That alone would be a deal breaker. I've returned a few LP's that had steep neck angles. I like to have my stop tailpiece flush with the deck and the bridge lower to the deck. When the neck is set at too steep of an angle you get the situation you have with that guitar with the tailpiece and bridge height.

Hey Brad I think your right on about the SG. I recently was looking to buy one and was in a shop in CO. They had an 61 Reissue for 13-1400. They also had what was labeled an SG Standard for 975. However the Standard was mislabeled. It was a 61 reissue. For my hand size the thinner neck feels better. So i scooped it right up. Plays and sounds like a dream with those better pickups. Nice and light ....

Hey Brad, you make any guitar sound, at worst, really good, and at best great. I find the recipe for great with the new SG Standard is:
Throw the classic 57/57+ pickups in that. It will sound like a million bucks, if you do. I have a like SG std, and those pickups
give it a real musically expressive voice. If it weren't for the neck dive, it'd be my favorite guitar to play all the time. Instead, I play my LP with Custombuckers.

Agree the pickup thing is a design flaw to me to.
There are ways to fix it with foam under the pickup to even it out parallel with the strings. But it takes some time to get it right.
But it can be done ,s shouldn't have to ,Gibson should have fixed that years ago..
But I like you enjoy the SG and yes a hybrid one with pickup rings and the standard neck would be great..

Hey Brad! Interesting comment about the SG. Although I’ve always been a Gibson fan, and personally owned a 91 LP Studio Lite and a 2000’s DC LP special p90, I would never buy many amazing sounding SG’s or 335’s because of the neck heel strap button location, and how it hangs.
I say all that to say, I don’t have a lot of experience with that model in this video, but as far as the pickup tilt, one thing that might work is raising the polepieces on that pickup to compensate for the slant since they are on the side of the pickup that’s slanted away from the strings. In theory, I think it would get the magnetic field close enough to what a “level” pickup would achieve.

    • @badbrad

Great idea on the pickup thing. I'm not crazy about the location of the strap button either but I can make it work.

    Tasty Licks man!
I personally like the ES-335 BUT the one with the orange drop caps and the 57 Classics.
That particular guitar can do it all. Being a gigging musician its hard to scale down your rig but we all want to do it. Finding an amp that would allow me to scale down my pedal board was a huge challenge. But yeah the 335 can do country, jazz, alternative, funk, rock, blues, and even some metal. I think the SG can do all those but maybe jazz, its just that the 335 has that extra special sauce on it, most artists can't tell the difference but it IS there for those that can hear it. Even 335 copies, although one or two are close, cant get that secret Gibson 335 sauce right, I believe its the Nitro finish.

I agree with all your points. I play a really good 335 copy as the #1. Number 2 is an SG DIY kit w. set neck. It's as good as any Gibson SG (4-5 ?) I've ever played. (pickups aside, but they're not bad, tone-wise recordable)
My thoughts are, the SG takes top honors in the category of stable tuning on damp foggy stages. 😃

Or a Silvertone with a Guitar Case Amp. I found the SG fatiguing with a long gig. My favorites were/are the Les Paul Models and Telecasters. Hate Strats!!!
For some reason I really enjoyed Les Paul Specials with P90s. I have a custom LP Special now with GFS PAFs. For some reason that is what I pick up
