This is the ideal podcast, due to the following reasons: 1) Jumps straight into the content, with minimal intros 2) Allows the guest to speak, including going on tangents. 3) Asks intelligent questions while interrupting the guest 4) Balance between 2) and 3). Most other podcasters sacrifice too much of one for the other, while this podcast offers the ideal balance (in my view, of course)
“If you’re listening to this podcast, you’re at least a cynic in recovery.” Thank you Chris, that compliment was a push in the right direction. You, Nick Bare, Bedros keullian, The Von, Jordan Peterson are all positive male role models for us. I appreciate you, and I’m grateful for the content you Strive to create.
I've noticed that there is a huge correlation between cynicism and heavy internet usage. Like I see all this cynicism on forums and comment sections, but in the real people, people are way more positive and happy.
pretty basic, internet usage exposes you to many issues and problems in the world you otherwise wouldn't have realised. Its a good thing to be more informed and not a negative, even if it makes you feel uneasy. The issue is not internet usage, or learning about the world but how you deal with that information.
Or alternatively, there is a correlation between cynicism and exposure to information that infers distrust. So people that do not have access to such information are blissfully happy but ignorant.
That's because ignorance is bliss. The trick is really to keep in mind which of all the terrors and fuck-ups the world has to offer actually do affect you on a day-to-day basis. That's usually only a fraction of what you can become aware of by just reading the news every day.
The way you broke down the cynical genius illusion was brilliant! It reminded me of someone I knew who always believed their pessimistic worldview made them more insightful than everyone else. But as you said, cynicism doesn’t make us smarter-it can actually make us blind to all the good in the world. It's easy to fall into this trap of thinking negativity equals sophistication, but as you noted, it's often just another form of bias.
I think its easy enough to research what is on social media, however, research material is as valid as the people who are writing the history or story!
Cynicism isnt playing poker by always folding. Its realizing that life IS poker. I didnt think life would be candyland, but i did at least think it would be a team sport - I'd find my people, we'd win together or we'd lose together, but at least we would be together. And then i got screwed over again and again, until i finally realized that you're playing the game alone. That realization, that understanding that you are all you have, you are all you can count on - that is the foundation of cynicism. At least to me, maybe I'm using the wrong word.
The thing is we evolved to play the team game,.this is truly a unique time in the history of the species where the one's who artfully deceive the rest win, it's flipping our genetic programming on its head.
its because negative information requires attention and involves a problem that needs to be sorted where as neutral or positive information isn't a problem so doesn't need attention

Default pessimism mindsets are overrated. Shoutout to all the perpetual optimists out there! Life is too rad to let cynicism constantly pervade your thoughts and cognitive outlook.
Chris came into this discussion with some preconceived ideas about cynics and cynicism and it was refreshing to see him be open minded and have the ability to 'think again'.
Because of the subjective nature, you can never say whether a person is being cynical or they’re actually being alert to danger. You may think it’s foolish so you would call that person cynical but who are you to say? Politicians do this thing where if you don’t agree with their political agenda they will just call you cynical.
Good evening Chris and Jamil So I very recently joined a brand new workplace/team. Took a while for me to jump ship and swim to something new. Had been treading water way too long previously. With no cynicism in sight, well maybe a little tiny bit given my previous sad ending to a long disastrous workplace experience. But anyways, all things considered was willing to continue trusting and start a new. Long mental story short! Currently can describe my new nursing post as a living nightmare, for many disturbing reasons. Time will reveal how right or wrong I am about our current nursing culture. Really thinking twenty odd years ago I learned my way into nursing and currently thinking, maybe I'm now learning my way sadly out of said career choices. Still need to pay the bills though, part of what is currently unfolding is my actual living nightmare. Couldn't write it! So to speak. Truly grateful for this today. Sensemaking brain gym, for sure. 💜
The best advice is to turn cynicism into skepticism. I have learned from the past, adjusted my actions to avoid the same mistakes, and I am happy with the results. It's hard to tell someone with a rough past to tell them not to be cynical. You just have to reframe it.
You can always tell someone that has never seen some seriously bad shit. Because they say stupid things like "if you meet someone and you have a weird feeling, you have no evidence and you're biased." Damn right I'm biased! I got my head cracked open with aluminum baseball bats lol. I've been set up and jumped and all kinds of stuff. This is all long in my past but if I get a bad feeling I am soon to be outski. Lest I regret not listening to my gut. Some of what he said I do agree with, but it's pretty obvious in his scientific world he's never really been through the shit
Maybe the cynicism comes from the fact that from our governments actions, to our celebrities to our institutions are constantly involved in one major scandal after another, justice to those individuals are rarely enforced, people accused of wrongdoing simply resign, and the world moves on, so you really think the average person seeing and experiencing this over and over would logically maintain trust in anything or anyone?? that’s asking for a pretty tall order there!
Honestly i think if you're happy and positive in this world, you're either ignorant, stupid, or have just been lucky enough to not have something happen to you that would make you realize how depressing life truly is
Would you consider having Robert Edward Grant on your podcast? His words open you up to higher dimensions. He is an expert on sacred geometry, the pyramids, and the science of spirituality.
Chris, Please introduce speakers briefly at the start of discussion, which, importantly, can help contextualize their remarks. I don't want their CV or promotional hype - a one sentence bio would be appreciated.

"But it's important to stay informed about world events!" You are addicted. You are an addict - in the most literal sense. Put the news down and start living your life.
It's funny how it's "important to stay informed" and what then? What exactly changes about our lives after we've consumed the news? NOTHING. Call me a cynic, I don't fucking care. But fact is: The news is NOT important. What is important is what you make of your time you have on this world and I don't think that consuming the news daily or even weekly is a healthy thing to do. Especially since the news isn't objective and 99% of the time is just some proper gander. Absoluteley agree.

thats just the perfect example of ignorance is bliss. Terrible way to go about life.
