I lived in these tiny apartments by the seatac airport when I was a kid. We would use the pool at the Jet motel by the airport in the summer. Jimmy Hart, Bret Hart and HTM stayed there along with others. I asked for a autograph from Jimmy Hart when we were at the pool. He didn't want to sign a piece of paper. He said he had something better. He have me a $1 bill and signed it. Then he said, don't spend that and he handed me a $5 bill. I believe he could tell I was pretty much dirt poor. Super cool guy! HTM was a jerk though. He would not give a autograph or even acknowledge he was a Wrestler. I also got a autograph from Bret Hart that day. Damn! That was over 30 years ago. That is my Jimmy Hart story. Great guy by all accounts and was a great talent!
Whenever I hear "Jimmy Hart" all I see and hear is Jimmy desperately screaming into his megaphone "DON'T LET HIM MAKE THE TAG!! DON'T LET HIM MAKE THE TAG!!!" to Jerry Saggs just before Hawk tagged Animal and the rest was history.
I love listing to this stuff. I was so into this when I was a kid. To hear all the behind the scenes stuff is just great. Love it. Great interview! I love Honky Tonk. He was the only heel I rooted for when I was a kid. I loved him as IC champ.
He’s a good story teller. Plus I like that he tells how much of an asshole Strongbow was, but didn’t totally bury him immediately. He explained why Strongbow blew
I just subscribed to this and I've been sitting here for a couple hours and I can't put it down it is interesting good work to the producers of this program kudos💯👍👏😉
HTM did give the jobbers a lot of shine when he was the champion. I remember he put over Brady Boone pretty good, in fact even though HTM won the match, all I remember is Boone's amazing moonsault-type move from the top rope on HTM that no one was doing in the WWF.
This makes a lot of sense. I didn't think Vince had the brains to put the HTM/Jimmy Hart team together. The Undertaker/Paul Bearer team was just Lurch and Gomez; but The Colonel/Elvis team was Wayne's idea.
Say what you will about HTM... The guy seems pretty sober and I am guessing that was part of the reason he lasted so long as the ICC and why Jimmy Hart was so thrilled to join him
I still fondly rem knee when Honky was the THE Hater Among Haters with his shoot comments. A favorite of mine was making be 20 years ago when talking about one of those Raw reunion episodes with all the old timers and he mocks Ricky Steamboat for looking like an old man with his gray hair. And then in the next sentence insulted Hillbilly Jim trying to look young by dying his hair. Amazing. In the same rant he also referred to “that big, fat, Tiger Chung Lee faced Ted DiBiase”.
He turned an elvis gimmicks into one of the best. Awesome bad guy at the time, the wwe should let him give the young talent info on what to do out there, be a writer maybe the product would do better. get bret hart to write stuff, new creative team, mcmahon needs to retire and let either hhh or someone else lead the pack. Just my two cents. get jesse ventura in there too.
"The greatest Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion of all time !" Honky Tonk Man ! "I got long sideburns and my hair slicked back, I'm drivin' down the road in my pink Cadillac, The Honky Tonk Man, Yeah I'm The Honky Tonk Man, I'm mean, I'm bad, I'm The Honky Tonk Man !"
He was terrible a face..totally didnt work and you could tell they were trying to ram it down our throats so that's why the audience turned up their nose. He mad a great adjustment and was a great heel.👍
According to HTM, he always envisioned the character as a heel, but Vince wanted him to be a face. His theory is Vince thought he could sell foam guitars to the kiddies.
@John Gallagher, much like it didn't work when Vince took George Steele who was a kickass heel & turned him into an idiot who could only say 1 word & the thing is, he was a very intelligent man. Just like it didn't work when Vince tried to have Harley do a run as a babyface in 89, which sucked because Harley's not a babyface much like Tully's not a babyface.
Yeah he has admitted it and other shoot videos... i mean i dont think he was a junky but def took pian killers and other stuff. As did alot of the boys in his time.
In HonkyTonk's featured/main events, he dished out about 30% punishment and took about 70%. He was an easy guy to work with. The time he hit Jake The Snake over the head with his guitar it didn't break through like it should have. I assume HTM was supposed to use a thin balsam wood breakthrough guitar. He used a real guitar instead. He should have known the difference in weight unless he was high
If I remember correctly that Summerslam where Honky Tonk Man lost the belt was on a Monday night. The following Sunday, the WWF did an afternoon (2pm start time) at the Moncton Coliseum in New Brunswick, Canada. I went to this show with my binoculars. I was sitting way up in the seats. One of the matches (somewhere in the middle of the show) was Honky Tonk Man vs Ultimate Warrior (Champion). Through the binoculars I could see Honky Tonk Man giving the double axe handle to the back of the Ultimate Warrior (outside of the ring) and he wasn't even touching the Warrior. But when the Warrior hit the Honky Tonk Man, he really connected. The match ended when Jimmy Hart got up on the apron and hit the Warrior on the back with his megaphone and was disqualified. At the time, the Honky Tonk Man was my favorite wrestler. The main event was (champion) Macho Man Savage vs Dino Bravo and Macho Man retained with the flying elbow drop from the top turnbuckle. It was cool to see the Macho Man kick out of Dino Bravo's finishing move
I watched a HTM shoot segment where he discusses the match. He was one of the few boys who got along with Warrior personally and professionally. However, he knew how limited, shitty, and stiff UW was as a worker. Knowing he had to do the job and drop the belt anyway, he was grateful to be able to get squashed and not work a real match and get hurt by Hellwig. He trusted that his heel persona wouldn't be hurt at all by the match, and he was right for the most part. Only problem was he was lower on the card not being in the title picture anymore, but he still drew big heat, no matter what angle he was in
From the title of the clip I thought this was going to be about how they didn’t get along working together. I was thinking I thought I heard jimmy say they got along fine. 2-4-19
If they didn't get along, they sure did make it LOOK like they did. It looked like a perfect match: the Mouth of the South and HTM as Elvis and The Colonel. Even better than Paul Bearer and Undertaker.
@@jamesfrancistamburojr8180 you had to wonder if Vince was on something around this time ..lol ..around the exact same time he introduces Danny Spivey and Mike Rotundo as the American Express hoping that maybe we wont notice just a few months earlier Barry Windham and Rotundo were the U.S. Express...smh

@Mike Keller.. but so was Bret and Jimmy Hart.
Thanks for sharing, that's fucking awesome.
Good story
Joseph Evans thanks for sharing that experience! That made my day.
It was a brilliant idea to pair Honkytonk Man with Jimmy Hart.
They were a perfect team!
Jimmy Hart was one of those managers who'd fit with whoever he was managing
I agree. The style they presented got the heat they wanted.
Always loved when he hit guys with the guitar. Don't think anybody cheated more than the HTM.

I hated Elvis thanks to HTM!

And now we got Elias.
If Macho Man has a baby and HTM and Jeff Jarrett adopted him.
