I operated a number of water plants several years ago. You often have the tall water towers and good sized pressurized tanks (half water/half pressurized air) to maintain water pressure.
Here in the Netherlands most water towers are from the late 19th and early 20th century and architects really had a go at them, both neo-renaissance and art-deco, generally in brick. Many are among the most loved landmarks, standing out like modern church towers.
Nerd here 🙌 I enjoyed this. 😆 I have driven cross country with my family and have seen a lot of them. Never really thought about them except that they are dangerous to climb after a night of drinking. (I must have seen videos or heard of some accidents occurring on them). Actually, I didn’t think 🤔 that some were still being used for water. But, just not taken down. 🤷♀️
I live out in the country, right beside a 500,000 gallon water tower with nothing written on it. I don't really notice it much when the leaves are on the trees but when they fall like right now, it's definitely there!
the point is that the pumps don't have to run whenever anyone turns on a tap. when the tower level gets low enough the pumps turn on and fill it again. they don't have to turn on every time any person just happens to take a shower or wash their hands.
Actually the pumps stay on. There is a valve on the towers that is regulated by pressure. At a certain pressure it opens to fill the towers, then at a lower pressure it opens again to drain them. We have extra pumps for when the pressure gets too low, we turn those off and on as needed. But there is always at least one pump running at any given time. At least that how it works at my plant.
@@syx3s If we turn the pumps off, the pressure drops, significantly. LOL The pumps are what keeps the pressure up. Like I said, when the pressure gets too high we turn one of them off. We try to keep the pressure between 60 and 70 psi here at the plant, but it loses pressure out in the distribution system. Been doing this for 25 years, lol.
@@syx3s LMAO, there are no check valves on the tower, it's not like a bicycle tire. It's an atmospheric valve. A check valve prevents flow from the opposite direction to prevent contamination. @2:20 The War of the Worlds was a 1938 radio show. The radio show was told from the perspective of a radio news announcement but at the very beginning the announcers said as such however if you tuned in after that announcement then it sounded like real news. This occurred when tv's were outrageously expensive, apx 10-14k of today's dollars, so everyone got the news from the radio or newspaper. While the show was only 60 minutes long, it was on repeat.

The water tower is quite literally the only reason the majority of people have flowing water (non direct well systems). The water in skyscrapers is stored at the top, you're only paying to pump it to the top and gravity draws it down to the bottom (instead of every individual user having to maintain their own pump). I can speak to NYC since I grew up there, the reason is because the water pressure isn’t high enough to reach beyond a certain floor on its own. The drinking water system is fed from watersheds to the north which are at a higher elevation, so it travels to the city via gravity. The velocity that the water enters the city will only reach sinks/kitchens on the 6th or 7th floors. To provide water to the higher floors you need to have a water tower/tank on the roof that can then distribute the water to the other floors.
@@kevinremache7212 I know why LOL, I am familiar with the technique behind it, I appreciate the effort tho. It just baffles me that a first world country ...well let's say it still is for sake of argument, still chooses to do so. No water reservoirs on towers and skyscrapers in Europe I assure you.
