    Happy to see you back despite what has happened and I'm happy to see you loving the LCD-4! I've been loving my LCD-4z with just about the same amount of enthusiasm. They certainly don't look as amazing (that chrome!), but I gotta say I don't think I'll be buying another pair of headphones for a VERY long time. I do want to bring my headphones to SoCal CanJam this year just to compare them with the others so I hope to see you there!

      I think the 4z is a sleeker design. The build certainly is better, and the 4z's are lighter. I bought this older version on the advice of viewers like you guys!

    A fantastic episode and congratulations on the LCD 4. I was looking at getting these also but we only have the LCD 4Z on ebay in the UK so I ultimately went for a new pair of the Sennheiser HD800S

    Great video Michael! I love the Ferum stack with my LCD-5, and the LCD-4 was one of my favorite headphones for bass. The first time I heard it, I remember the bass sounded like I had my own personal kick drum sitting right next to me. It instantly became my standard for judgement on headphone bass!
    Just a tip on the difference between the LCD-5 bass and the LCD-4 bass: On the LCD-4, the thicker pads will create a better seal, which will make the sub bass response better when compared to the less conforming pads of the LCD-5. Also, with the LCD-4, there is a large dip in the mids that allow the listener to crank up the volume, which in turn elevates the bass compared to headphones that have more mid presence.
    So with those two things in mind, the LCD-5 will have less apparent bass unless you: 1. can get a good seal on the LCD-5, and 2. either volume match both headphones at ~500hz or use EQ to bring up the mids in the LCD-4, or bring down the mids in the LCD-5.
    I look forward to your comparison between the two!

    Michael the strap was the one that was originally shipped when the headphone came out and I believe they updated to the other strap when the LCD 4Z came out

    Thanks for s great review, and I completely agree. Lcd-4's are the only headphone I've consistently held onto. Out of curiosity what ear pads are on those? Because they are not the stock or the updated ones. (Newer updated lcd pads from Audeze are very good sounding and much better than the stock ones the lcd-4 came with).

    • @DirectorsGarage
      @DirectorsGarage  2 года назад

      I don't know which earpads these are-- I bought these used, clearly. I do like them, they are quite comfy and the sound is excellent. Whoever installed them knew what they were doing. I'm guessing they're ZMFs-- maybe Dekoni's but They have a ZMF type of stitch.

    • @joshuavincent2011
      @joshuavincent2011 2 года назад

      @@DirectorsGarage thank you! I think next ear pad replacement (next month or two) I'll see if I can track these down and see how they sound in comparison.
      Really excited foe the next shootout as I've been looking at getting a "complimentary" headphone to fill in some of the lcd-4's weaknesses, or an m-scaler to pair with my tt-2. Regardless, I'm glad you hear you enjoyed the lcd-4's. They happen to be my favorite headphone to date.

    How do they sound with wa5 ? I want to buy the same combo looking for warm natural sound. Sounds like this might be it

    • @DirectorsGarage
      @DirectorsGarage  2 года назад

      It's a slightly different take on the same experience. The bass tucks in a bit and you give back some detail. There's more of a holographic effect and the soundstage seems to open up a bit. It's a richer sound, but you lose some of that visceral punch and crispness of a solid state.

    • @aleksanderszeps2098

      @@DirectorsGarage Is it warm sounding with we300b and lcd4 ? Are 8 watts enough for feeding abyss or lcd4s ? I want exactly same setup as you have. Thank you for your time

    • @DirectorsGarage
      @DirectorsGarage  2 года назад

      Yes, warmer sound. The WA5 has plenty of power for the LCD. I do think I personally prefer the Ferrum stack for the LCD-4. The WA5 gives the LCD-4 a sweeter, more euphoric sound, but I love the authority of the sub bass on the Ferrum. It’s potent.

      Head-fi.org classifieds is a good place to start. Audeze occasionally has a pair, not right now, however. Ebay. For a decent set I wouldn't pay more than $2100 or so. Just be patient. They pop up quite often. You can alternately go with the LCD-4z, though I'm told it doesn't have all of the magic of the original. Those are a little more common on the resale market or you can purchase new from Audeze or Audio46.com

    What headphone amp would you recommend for these (being that these r 200 ohms)?

    • @DirectorsGarage
      @DirectorsGarage  2 года назад +1

      Hey JD- the LCD 4 isn’t the easiest to drive. I’d look at a Burson Conductor, GSX Mini, or Ferrum Stack (my choice). You can find deals on all of them with a little patience. Definitely consider used gear. Not much to wear out on these amps. You could consider a tube amp, but the tubes give up a little drive in the sub, to my ears and they aren’t as resolving. I prefer solid state with the LCD.

      @@DirectorsGarage Thanks! Because of your outstanding review, I chose to pick up a used pair on eBay. I had the LCD 5 and quickly sold it. The lack of bass, comfort & clamp was a turn off for me. I also don’t mind the weight of the lcd 4 as I’m not a small guy (6’4, 250). Do u think the Schiit Ragnarok 2 can drive these?

  • @migurbimarq

    My friend, what year was that original version of LCD 4 released and do you consider it to be the best of all versions? I understand that there are several versions until 2021. Thank you very much my friend!

    • @DirectorsGarage
      @DirectorsGarage  2 года назад

      The original LCD-4 was released in 2015. The Z version was released in 2018. It's a more efficient (easier to drive) version. I haven't had past experience with the LCD-4 to comment on sound differences. I purchased these on the recommendation of viewers like you, who claimed the original 4 was a better sounding headphone than the 4z revision. I took their word for it.

      @@migurbimarq I can’t say with 100% certainty. But basically, yes. It also has Dekoni fenistratred pads, not original Audeze- but they feel great. I see no reason to change them out.

      @@DirectorsGarage My friend and where can I get those same original LCD 4 like the one you have? For now I understand that the LCD 4 of 2021 are sold out and that the previous versions also have much more reason.

      @DirectorsGarage  2 года назад

      @@migurbimarq Check the Head-Fi classifieds. You shouldn't pay more than $2000. These were just $1800. Completely worth it-- considering how good they sound. They might be my best bargain find.

    Great video but background music is very annoying and way to loud.

    • @DirectorsGarage
      @DirectorsGarage  2 года назад

      You're not the first to mention it. Here's the deal: I'm listening to commercial music on open back headphones. If I play it straight, I'm going to be demonetized for a copyright violation. So the dramatic music is covering what I'm listening to on the headphones. I could drop the sound out entirely, but that would take away the "live listening" appeal, which I think has value. Sorry if it bothers you, I am an acquired taste, as I like to say. We can discuss on tomorrow's live show if you're interested.
