    Seeing a chrono being taken apart really gives an appreciation for the complexity and precision that goes into them.
    I'm keen to see the grand seiko live!

    I am glad you are feeling better. Nice work on the Wakmann it looks great! There is a series of 28 books available for servicing vintage chronographs called "Esembl-O-Graf Chronograph Watch Course". From 1949 and It is out of print but I bought the CD version on ebay for $10. Well worth the information on a lot of the chronograph movements of the 40's and 50's. I take photos of my parts trays too. I find it helps me remember where things go. I have a watch with a Landerton 51 chronograph waiting for me to gain more experience before I try working on it.

    Good advice about taking a picture of your parts tray… I started doing that with the Bulova Jet Clipper automatic that I just restored, and it made a huge difference. Great video, beautiful watch.

    An excellent video to watch, enjoy and learn from. You showed two skill levels, your own and what is needed to achieve a high standard of service. The change in your photography since the commencement of of your video inception is phenomenal. So good. Your commentary is detailed and friendly. Super fresh is still there. The amount of time and work in presentation is a credit. The information you gave about photographing the parts tray before cleaning is such a game changer. Simple but so essential. Thank you for that. Looking forward to your next presentation. I wish you a good Christmas and will spend much of mine opening my 'watch tool fest'. Personally, You and two others have made such a change to my life. No ennui. I'm not bored because I have an interest in watch servicing. How boring is that? Haha. Matt, Thank you.

    Thanks Matt. I reckon the watch is 50’s or later as it looks like it has an incabloc shock setting. There were definitely import taxes on complete watches, especially in the US. Dennison was the largest case maker in the UK for a very long time. It was common to go to a jewellers/watchmaker and pick your movement and case and usually get the jeweller’s named dial. Dennison also made cases for Rolex who imported Swiss movements when they were founded in London prior to moving over to Switzerland in around 1920. Glad you’re feeling better too.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  10 месяцев назад

      Cheers for the info Tom. I believe you are right about the taxes part as it makes total sense.

    • @MrGrentch
      @MrGrentch 10 месяцев назад

      100% on the import taxes. In the US Longines had worked around this by teaming up(later buying out)the US Wittnauer brand, shipped Swiss movements to the US to be assembled and cased by US watch case companies to make them more "American Made" and bypass the tariffs. They also tended to have more American style cases, not really seen elsewhere, like the twisted lug styles of the 50's. 18Kt gold was heavily taxed so US watches of the period usually have 14kt cases, which you rarely see outside America. In the UK 9kt was more the norm.
      By the mid 40's Longines were exporting a few hundred thousand movements a year to the US by this method. Jaeger Lecoultre and Vacheron Constantine saw this success and wanted in, so Longines became their US distributor and their movements were also imported and cased through the same Longines-Wittnauer plant. Jaeger Lecoultre, dropped the Jaeger part of their name, so until the 1970's they were branded as Lecoultre and mostly with separate lines to their European watches.
      PS Though I agree with you on the 1950's age, maybe early 60's, I would say incabloc isn't that great a way to judge age, . Incabloc came out in 1935 and can be found in watches from the late 30's onward. I've an Alpina from 39/40 with incabloc and it looks like an incabloc setup you'd find even in new watches. The lume could be tritium, or it may even have been non radioactive early type of luminova.

    Super juicy,super fresh. That’s the same thing she said about my canon pinion last night 😂😂😂😂😂. A shot of peppermint schnapps with a shot of good vodka will take care of symptoms you are still experiencing 😂. I have a Venus 150 in “waiting” as my first chronograph project. I to have the same crystal press but I had to pay retail 🤬🤬🤬🤬. As for the holidays; at my age I’m just happy to see them and this year is going to be special: thanks to a little windfall, the wife just authorized me to buy a new Elmasolvex RM for the workshop. I’m waiting for a response and quote from Couisins presently and estimated delivery time. Stay fresh man 🥃🥃

    In the pre-european union times a lot of countries had seperate importtax for watches and even a importtax for the rubies inside the movement. By assembling the watches inside the country where they would be sold, you could avoid having to pay those taxes.

    Reasons are because Switzerland is a country of three entities... French, German and Italian...
    Most popular Swiss watches, those people are French and are speaking French language ... So there's that :D

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  10 месяцев назад +1

      Cheers for that but I do think it had a lot to do with taxes rather than language. Thanks for watching 🙂
