Abdal's Gourmet Catering | Story of a food business start up

Abdal Moneem Kyassah and his family moved to Dunedin in 2017. Abdal had previously worked in hospitality businesses in Syria, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, he acknowledges that the business environment is completely different in New Zealand. Abdal’s story is not finished, this short video is a reflection on his first four years starting and growing a food business in Dunedin. In addition to using the fundamentals of his business experiences from other countries which includes starting small, getting to know the scene and the market deeply, finding ways to make authentic food of high quality at accessible prices, Abdal has tapped into the supportive and connected start-up community in Dunedin. This has included working with Red Cross, Start-up Dunedin, Dunedin City Council and the Otago Farmers Market.
Abdal says, he is always working and thinking outside of the box so he can design a menu to meet his client’s needs regarding budget, dietary, service style and event type. He is happy to help people think through starting a new food business.
