  • The forgotten story of South Asian seafarers - 'Lascars' - who were a mainstay of Britain's merchant navy for centuries.
About the Wellington Trust - www.thewellingtontrust.org/
The Wellington Trust is a registered charity with two objects, preserving the WW2 Convoy escort ship, HQS Wellington, now moored on the Thames in London, and educating the public about the heritage of the British Merchant Navy. Lascars in War and Peace -was an exhibition held on board ship, now touring the country, included panels about Lascars and their experiences and family connections, and an 8-minute film, bringing the story right up to date.

I sailed with Bank Line in the 70's - some chinese, but mostly Indian and Bangladeshi crews, One old Serang I sailed with had been torpedoed Twice in the north atlantic in ww2 -- he was quite small and skinny, quite how he survived the cold water I don't know. They were great traders, when they paid off (usually in Calcutta) after a 2 year trip, the indian customs would have a field day, even after the old man had appropriatly bribed them not to be too rapacious.

Why are the Bangladeshis lascars marked as Indian since Bangladesh and India was created after WW2.
    This is a huge disrespect!

@thethethethewhat On the video in the Church!
It was called Bengal Presidency, then. India came into existence in 1947.

But in 1917, when they died, they were Indians. They did not live to see Bangladesh.

@sharonm.6986 India came to existence at the same time as East and West Pakistan, and that's in 1947.
Before the it was Bengal Presidency, before then Bengal Sultanate, before then Bengal Subha, before then Hindustan and I can go on even more further but never India.
It's out of ignorance their putting down India, without any research. It's like people calling the English German.
