Is it bad that I see Brand of Ill Omen and think 'Braid of Fire says yes'?
Exactly!
The thing I still don't understand about the reserve list is that if the cards were reprinted the old ones from older sets would still hold relative value due to them being collectables and the new ones price would be lower
They would, yes. We see this with Alpha cards regardless of whether they're on the list or not.
it boils down to boomers grasping and holding on to anything they can, what else is new?
Sadly, nobody thought this way 30 years ago. :(
The issue is purely a legal issue at this point.
It depends on the type of card. A moderately played revised dual land for example would likely drop. An alpha Shivan dragon would not.
Brand of Ill Omen is also the same card that inspired the pose Godwyn the Golden is in after he is murdered.
Miyazaki is a known nerd and plays MTG.
Ohhhh that’s some neat trivia I didn’t know!
The one in the opening cutscene with the black knives around him?
@@boochin Yes
Similar to Pendrell Mists (and let's not forget about Magus of the Tabernacle) is Vile Consumption.
1UB: All creatures have “At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice this creature unless you pay 1 life.”
Paying 1 life instead of 1 generic mana doesn't hurt QUITE as much but it can still add up REALLY fast. It's also really easy to offset as your in great colors for lifelink/drain/etc effects.
That’s a really cool card I haven’t seen before! Invasion had some strange cards in it
Everytime a new BTAB comes out, I hit a whip and then a nae nae
do you murder your cousin afterwards?
I'd highly recommend Cadaverous Bloom. The card is broken in Yargle and Multani, draw 18 cards get a possible 36 mana... card wins me games
- Halls of Mist gets really fun with Moonfolk and Mana Breach, which allows you to reset the cumulative cost :P
Ohhh the bloom is a sweet card! I might need to try that out in a deck!
I run it in a Zaxara deck
it slaps with X draw spells, since 1 card becomes 2 with it
Cadaverous Bloom is a great card BUT it doesn't draw you cards.
It sounds like you're sacrificing Yargle and Multani to Greater Good or similar first (though these are great includes in Yargle and Multani anyway)?
You'd end up with 18 cards MINUS whatever you exile to Cadaverous Bloom and PLUS 2 mana for however many cards you exile.
Not a fan of it myself since you have to exile the cards but still really good.
Shimmer is very interesting because it targets basic and non-basic land types. So while you could name swamp or island, you could also name gate or desert. So, with a floor of 1/2ing the effectiveness of one basic land type, it also has the ceiling of destroying land based decks.
I have this in my Ghen stax edh deck. I use it with Solemnity. Cumulative upkeep actually puts 'time counters' on the permanent with the text and Solemnity prevents those counters from being placed on the Brand, making it stick around for free.
not sure if this was talked about already, but hall of gemstones is another fantastic card for cedh that I don't see too often.
I run Inner Sanctum alongside Brave the Sands in a go-wide deck. If I get both out the game is mine until a board wipe. And then my Clever Concealment does it’s job 😊
Love that halls card but remember that it doesn't take a land slot, it's essentially a zero mana enchantment since it doesn't tap for mana
Unless you are playing a deck with cards like Sylvan Scrying and Expedition Map for reliable fetching of Urborg (tomb), Yavimaya (Cradle), and/or World Tree. There's also a ton of artifacts and creatures that provide the ability for your utility lands to tap for colored mana as well.
Although, I will say that this point only holds for a couple utility lands that cannot tap for mana in a single deck. Consistency falls hard after that.
Hilariously I run both Brand of Ill Omen and Glacial Crevices in a Svella, the Ice Shaper Gruul Snow deck. I like going heavy in thematics, so most permanents that don't have the Snow Super-type themselves are from the Ice Age, Alliances, Coldsnap, and Kaldheim(with a few exceptions for cards to bring lands back from the graveyard because there is a lot of self-land destruction in Gruul Snow), It's one of my three Snow decks(I wanted every color to be covered at least once and Red and White each only have one valid Legendary Snow Creature)
Glacial Crevasse - man, they just gave Fog effects to *everybody* back then, didnt they?
There wasn't a way to easily recur it back then like you can now.
Phyrexian purge and sangromancer is effectively an asymmetrical board wipe as well, which is probably a good consideration :)
Oh that’s a cool synergy I wish I said that in the video!
back in the day i had a kaima the fractured calm deck. it was really bad because i was quite new back then, but one card i thought was really good was brand of ill omen. glad to see someone giving it the spotlight, its really underrated!
There is a certain irony in suggesting Shimmer as a budget buy... and then suggesting running it with cards that are very much NOT budget. Yavimaya isn't TOO bad at about $8 but Urborg is a $40 card. If you have black Blanket of Night makes a serviceable budget replacement for Urborg at about $.70.
That’s true, though for urborg it wasn’t that long ago when it wasn’t super expensive so I imaging a decent amount of edh players might have one. Though urborg does really need a reprint
@@thetrinketmage This is true but... the same can be said for ABUR duals, Cradle, etc.
One thing to note the modern wording of Cumulative Upkeep uses time counters placed on the card to indicate how many time the cost needs to be played so you can use effects that remove counters to keep the cost low or use Solemnity to never pay it if its in play first.
You can also blink the cards to easily reset the counters
Long live Glacial Chasm!
Not a Reserved List card but Ashes to Ashes is one of my favorite hidden gems from The Dark. Mono black 2-1 exile at the same cost as Murder is just fantastic
That card is so good! Very underrated removal
Great video! I do love picking up old underplayed stuff. I think Wizards really needs to figure out the reserve list problem sooner than later.
brand of ill omen is a great stax piece. I used it in a build around slicer where I'd enchant my own slicer then give him to each other player, preventing them from playing creatures on their turn.
Shimmer can also hit Caves, Gates, Urza's, Deserts, Lairs, Locus, Sphere many people don't realize this. It can also with Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Prismatic omen and/or Stormtide leviathan can be used to make it hit all lands.
Nobody asked but here are some of my favourite cheap reserve list cards (~5 dollars):
Not crazy powerful but Rainbow Vale is a very fun politics/dealmaking card that forces you to give the card to a player when you tap it for mana.
Apocalypse is the card equivalent of flipping the table over because you lost; destroying all permanents on the board while discarding your hand in the process. It’s practically useless in everything but Barren Glory decks but its hilarious to use when your losing just to spite your opponents.
Oh man, HUGE shoutout to rainbow vale. That goes in every hug deck I make since discovering it.
Triangle of War is also VERY easy to recur as a 1 drop artifact.^^
For other reserve list cards I would also recommend Grim Feast and Carnival of Souls.^^
One that I love from Ice Age is Ice Cauldron. Play it in Prosper to just exile cards in your hand to then play back out with no downsides. Play it in a control deck. If the turn cycle ends without anything to interact with, just dump your extra mana into it and throw a sorcery speed card in so that you don't lose tempo. Or, you can put it in a deck with a high CMC curve. Only have 6 mana available and an Emrakul in hand? Store 6 mana and Emrakul in the cauldron in your opponent's end step, untap with that same 6 mana, and now cast your 12 mana spell with only 6 mana available.
Best of all, the cards in exile don't care if Ice Cauldron gets removed. The only thing that blowing up Ice Cauldron does is destroy the mana stored in it, you are still allowed to cast cards exiled with Ice Cauldron even if it gets removed
Just found this series and I already love it
All these mirage and tempest and ice age cards are so wacky.
Absdolulty loved some of these cards! absolutely perfect for a mono-red deck I'm looking at!
Temporal aperature seems really good in a Jodah Deck
Brand of Ill Omen would also work beyond mono red, if you have blink effects.
I like it in Mazzy. Get it down for cheap (lots of cost reducers for enchantments) and Mazzy will recur it so I can just let it be sacced and recast it on whoever the biggest problem is.
inner sanctum also has a place in a casual tameshi, reality architect list. you can let it die and reset it whenever you need it. that commander does many weird stuff and i bet that if we go into the tank we can find many weird cards from the earlier days of magic to put in there. also triangle of war works well with tameshi as well. it is a very interesting card, with some success in cedh, but most importantly a house for a recursion deck in azorius.
My favorite Reserved Los5 card is Firestorm. Also I think there should not be a Reserve List.
Fire storm is great! And I agree the reserve list sucks
Ty for the recs! How have you been recently, Mr. Trinket Mage?
Psst... try Priest of the Blood Rite... I've been piloting it in pauper commander and it goes unbelievably hard, even in regular commander I play it in any black deck that can abuse etbs and I haven't regretted it so far. It's not quite gary tier imo, you dont get the crazy drain but you do get some insane board presence if you manage to blink/loop the priest a few times.
8:06 ah yes, repetible colorless card advantage. I use chaos wand in my budget Omnath Locust of All control deck and right now my friends are so tired of the card that they removed it at any chances they have
0:08 - and that card on the right is why I'm just tossing the pieces of Cradle Control into Nic Fit. It's still not _cheap_ cheap, but it shaves a few grand off the price by not having to pay for Cradles.
My favorite card on the reserve list is Forcefield. Which is a shame cause I really want one.
For those who don’t know, it’s 3 colorless artifact that says; pay 1 colorless and prevent all but 1 damage from target source of damage.
That may not sound impressive until you realize that it’s very strong at defending against Voltron decks. I want them to reprint or at least make a spoof card of it. Even paying 2 mana for an ability like that is golden
I like force field too! I talked about it in a previous video
@@thetrinketmage I might have to watch that vid
@@El_Chico_des_Galos it was my weird AI vid that nobody watched. I will be talking about forcefield in the future though since I love that card!
they can reprint the reserved list. just slight mods need to be added.
like make snow covered dual lands.
make ancestral recall with buyback.
make time walk a sacrifice half you life rounded down.
make the moxes indestructabile with an extra ability. sacrifice to scry 2.
New to the game, bud?
@@brendans1983 i got a full set of duals which i traded for. since 1997.
I use pendrell mist and pendrell veil in my mono blue cedh control urza deck
honestly my mono blue voltron deck would love shimmer
Who’s the commander?
Mono-blue Voltron? Sounds cool. Ping me if you post the commander too, please
@@thetrinketmage Callaphe, beloved by the Sea mono blue devotion
@@thetrinketmage Callaphe, beloved by the Sea mono blue devotion
Halls of mist is def going in my Kura, Boundless sky deck. Its no Chasm but at that price could be a fun tutor that'll have my friends doing a double take at this never before seen card
Triangle of War is a great find. I have a Jared Carthalion true heir deck that has many burn and fight spells and I missed this one.
You should check out Arena
It's a land that doesn't tap for mana, but has a 3 mana tap Fight effect
The problem with Arena is that the opponent get to choose which of their creatures your creature fights. So they can just choose a random 1/1 token, or a creature bigger than your creature
What do you think of Legacy’s Allure?? I have been tinkering with an Esper Draw/Go control deck with Queza at the helm and I’m currently going with the non-combo build focusing on stealing late game threats. It’s much less powerful than the combo build but I’m enjoying it.
I have Undiscovered Paradise as an unexpected include in my Windgrace landfall deck. Let me max out the landfall triggers by playing the same land every turn. Even better if Azusa is out and I can drop everything.
It's a must for landfall - the gold border version is $1.50 for a lightly played copy.
Damn shimmer is so crazy, thats actually such a funny card.
Like sure, yavimaya very often gets pulled out by someone but even wo you can mess with whoever looks like they are about to win
Happy Birthday to me: a new Trinket video!
Happy birthday
Shimmer is an all star in aminatou and brago builds
I picked up like 5 balls of mist years ago for all my colourless decks without realizing it was reserved list till today 😂.
Brand of ill omen+braid of fire shuts them down
i'm probably sabotaging myself by mentioning this. But i'd enchant Slicer with that enchant.
Ooooh, that's dirty. Pair that with Vow of Lightning, it keeps him from punching you in the mouth once you're in a 1v1.
We can fix the reserve list land card issue with snow covered duals. Or just snow covered cradle. Problem solved
But then wouldn’t players run snow cradle and regular cradle? Then players who can’t afford the normal one would be unable to have 2 of the effect
Dominaria : Ice Age Remastered - Snow Duals, Snow Cradle + Academy + Phyrexian Tower + Pendrell Vale that set would make so much money with all of the snow being chase mythic lottery cards. Just kidding they would stretch all of the snow land over many sets to get every last penny of equity out of soft breaking the reserve list.
Had to take brand I'd ill omen out of my mazzy deck.... Felt like a war crime
It’s a crazy good card in that deck
My brother in christ you gotta show us the mono W draw go, I need to know how it works.
(I've been trying for years, except my commander is oketra the true)
I see SpongeBob reference, I like. Also this series is awesome.
Not a fan of Jabari’s influence being nonblack non artifact creature honestly
It has caused an issue for me once before so I get that but it’s usually not a problem…
With the increase of mtg prices, your gonna recommend dual land one day xD
The game has a bunch of alternatives to Inner Sanctum now and most are better.
Is there a better card that protects your whole team line this? And is it $1? I can’t think of one
@@thetrinketmage Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant is basically the same.
If you are going to use the effect proactively you can use Tajic, Legion's Edge, The Wanderer or Mark of Asylum to similar effect. There is some other worse options in Light of Sanction and Blessed Sanctuary.
Temporal Aperture is Urza redundancy lol, you hit infinite mana? okay, cast the entire deck and win
It's not, because Temporal Aperture taps when you activate its ability
Mistake? LOL! They knew EXACTLY what they were doing and are now currently cashing in because of that awful 'mistake'. Poor Wizards...
Wizards “doesn’t believe in” the secondary market so they don’t make anything off the reserve list cards
It just makes casual players’ deck-building experience miserable
Not really. The Reserved List was created after _Chronicles_ released, to appease players who threatened to boycott the game (and potentially kill it) over the possibility of expensive cards being reprinted and losing their value. It's unfortunate that it most likely saved the game at the time, and WotC might not be able to abolish the damned thing due to the promise made to players at the time potentially being a verbal contract.
I'm not defending it at all (I'm pretty much incapable of building anything playing City of Traitors thanks to it never getting a second print), just stating a fact.
None of these cards are "busted".
