Bro I came here after hearing a demo one at Walmart. And in Walmart a huge store hard for sounds to bounce back to you. I turned it up stood in the middle and got chills... chills in my spine. Then I smiled so big. I need to get this bar!
I stumbled on a killer deal. Walmart at one point had the price jacked up to over $400 for a couple of years, but I saw CLEARANCE tags for all of their ONN soundbars. The lesser models were already gone, and this last 42" 5.1.2 model was marked at $199. The clerk price checked it for me because I couldn't believe they'd actually sell it for that price. I was right - however, the clearance sale price was even lower: $149.99! How could I NOT get it? I took it home, and it kicks butt bigtime. The sound surrounds me like you described. What a find! I'd have been thrilled with it for $299.99. I don't know if Walmart will restock these or not, or maybe newer updated models are forthcoming. As I type this the date is May 15 2024.
My local Walmart had the 5.1.2 on clearance for $50 a few days ago, so I picked one up. My old 400w Philips stereo finally bit the dust after 22 years, and that's what I had my TV/games running audio through. Figured "Hey for $50 it's worth checking out. It's got to be better than my TV speakers." Lol.
Bought this soundbar as well after watching one or even both of your other reviews of it, had it in my living room for a bit, watched Venom on it, during the scene where he breaks into the convenience store and the police cars are driving by, I swear I looked outside to see if they were going by because it really did sound like police cars were going by in real life. It's currently in my gameroom, and I have a 36 inch Vizio 5.1 sound bar in my living room and I like that but sometimes I'm debating on switching them back. I think my issue with it is that I have this island thing that separates my kitchen and living room and it's big and open, and other than that it was great. Again I'm debating on switching them back around, because since I've gotten it, I've bought a 4k player and some 4k movies (The Matrix) so I definitely kinda want to rewatch those and try again
Just picked up one yesterday, I have a smaller living room. I tweaked the sound a bit and i am pleasantly surprised with how good it sounds. Dolby atmos for $299...it possible!

Excellent review. Thanks. I recently bought the Onn Soundbar but put the Subwoofer behind me vice being in front. Then played several movies. The best was Jurassic Park. The T-Rex scene where you see the vibrations in the water cup really came through the subwoofer! It was very much like the theater. My living room was filled with sound. Is it a true surround sound system? No, BUT for $299 it does a credible job. Very pleased with it.

The problem I see with these atmos setup is that the sound is reflecting off of various materials (what the ceiling materials are), texture (smooth ceiling verses dimple that many ceilings are painted as), lighting fixures, etc. The reality is a really good home (or movie) theater setup requires controlling the variables in sound mainly by eliminating it with treatments involving cancellation. I can see these things do it in small rooms with minimal fixtures but anything including the offset of not sitting in the center between the speakers would throw off many of the desired sound effects trying to establish placements (like the pod race scenes in Star Wars Phantom Menace).
I have this sound bar and watch every movie off center and I still get the ATMOS effect. I even get the sound going behind me sitting 2.5ft off the back wall. My room is not optimal, I have the same hallway on one side issue and I have been very impressed. Watch Rise of Skywalker when the emperor talks its amazing with this soundbar. Mulan to be specific, and 2nd it is so thick It almost covers the bottom of my tv screen. For the price, I’ve yet to hear anything better. Just wish it had DTS-X
The lack of dts support is what is keeping me from going with this one. In my experience dts tracks are far superior to dolby. I also have angled ceiling which could be a problem for up firing speakers.@@jalofanclub
I would like you to try the nakamichi sound bar for your viewers I think they would really like it and I think you would too to compare. Good job on this one keep them coming..
I went to Walmart, tested their demo, and WOW! I have never heard anything like that at a store before. The sound was literally all around me! It was phenomenal, I have put up my current Sony Soundbar for sale to buy this one. I do have 2 questions: 1. I have a Firestick connected to my TV how would I connect it all to work with EArc? Do I connect the firestick to the soundbar and then the sounbar to the tv? The TV is EArc capable. 2. Does the show or movie need to be Dolby Atmos as well or does it turn everything into Atmos?
Bought this and just arrived today. Walmart thankfully gave me someone's old return. Soundbar wasnt even secure in the box, cables were still plugged into the soundbar. The rest of the cables were just thrown in the box tangled up. And to top it off, there was no power cord for the subwoofer!!! Thats what I get for ordering from Walmart.
@@Kpaceguy One more question… I was considering the Vizio M series. I’m aware it has a leg up as it includes the rear speakers, but how do you think the sound quality of this ONN stacks up against that system?
When i looked at walmart, the display setup there said atmos on the led thats on the soundbar, mine has never said that, just “dolby surround” when i can get it to stay on that. Using a ps5 and ultra hd disc, hdmi connected directly to the soundbar
@@Kpaceguy So in the actual disc settings when you start the movie you have to change it to bitstream also, along with the settings on the ps5/4 or whatever you’re using. Unfortunately the onn 42” 5.1.2 subwoofer kept cutting out. Moved it everywhere, turned off wifi near it but it was annoying. Returned it and got a samsung. Wanted atmos but not the frustration
If you look at the owners manual you’ll see that you only get 3.1 sound from the system when you play tracks from USB, Bluetooth, and air play. You can only get the true atmos soundtracks through THE HDMI/ARC connection and I heard there is a firmware update that you need to get by hooking up the LAN to your router to enable a proper ARC/eARC connection between the soundbar and the TV.
@@dsecor2 not sure, there’s a video of a guy doing it. I think it needs to be hooked up to your tv as well at the same time. He hooked it up to the LAN and at first nothing happens but then he waited a little while and the bar display changed to “updating”. I think he said the process took about 1/2 an hour.
How tall is just the soundbar itself? I have a 2020 Samsung frame 65" that isn't mounted to the wall due to renting our apartment, the leg heighth is low, so I am curious, none of our Wal-Mart's have one on display here.
Ive been on the fence on this one and thats because it only does atmos. The majority of content out there has dtsx or dts hd master audio and i dont believe this sound bar will play either of those natively. Its between this and the vizio M51ax-J6 due to its surround speakers and the ability to do both atmos and dtsx. Now i know it is simulated height sounds without up firing speakers but my ceiling is not flat and angle upward toward the back of the room which would cause sounds to not bounce properly for the up firing speakers to work. From everything ive read if your ceiling is vaulted then dtsx would be a better choice. So with that being said have you tested any dts content on this soundbar to see how it sounds?
Considering 85% of all my blurays have dts hd master audio or dtx and only a few have atmos id say it is true. Almost all of my movies are dts audio. Im not talking about streaming content i dont waste my money anymore paying for things ill never own. Im not about that own nothing and be happy life so im refering to physical content which is what these systems at the end of the day will always perform best with. Streaming services use lossy codecs my bluray player does not. @@Kpaceguy
Did you connect it via optical or HDMI? Also, what content can you recommend to watch to experience Dolby Atmos sound? I decided to give it a try but so far I can't find much difference between the regular 2.1 of the comparable wattage and this one 🤔
I have been stuck trying to figure out what the backfiring inside firing speakers should be at, Because when I play music sometimes it sounds hollow if it’s up loud, I was wondering what Dolby Atmos is supposed to sound like And if I should keep the trouble at three or six?
Mine stays on welcome for a long time when turned on by the remote or the button for 30 sec but will fire up after. It turns on immediately when I turn my TV on with hdmi arc
@Kpaceguy I am stuck figuring out The best settings for S/L R & T/L R because I am not sure how loud the Dolby Atmos speaker should be compared to the front speakers and center, I just want to get the best experience, please respond when you get a chance
@@Kpaceguy sweet thanks. Also should the treble will be at six or three? I noticed three it’s more flat but it’s at treble six when I’m playing racing games that sounds louder and is more immersive
You need hdmi 2.0 or 2.1. If your plugging your bluray to the TV your TV needs to support hdmi 2.1 and eARC. If it doesn't you won't get atmos so you'll have to plug the bluray directly to the sound bar
You don't need a certain TV necessarily. Any TV 2014 or newer will be fine. The only real benefit of having a newer TV is that new TVs can pass through dolby atmos or dolby true hd signals to the sound bar via HDMI ARC. But other than that it doesn't too much matter.
You ABSOLUTELY need a TV with an HDMI (eARC) connection NOT just (ARC). HDMI (eARC) is the only connection that allows Dolby Atmos effects NOT HDMI (ARC). Now adays the first thing I look for in a TV are the types of HDMI connections in the rear. No eARC connection = No buy...
Its now 2023 and i read some reviews of people having sound issues after the update. Curious if anyone has bout this recently or has had any issues in 2023. Want to upgrade my samsung 3.1 system to a 5.1 for watching blu rays and 4k blu rays in the bedroom theatre.
Any way to get the text to stop scrolling across the bar while it’s in use? Just picked this bar up and it’s a huge issue for me with three bar being close to my tv screen.
I had this onn and had lip sync issues and it has volume leveling with virtually no adjustments. Played with it for three weeks. Looked around a bit more and found the Vizio 5.1.2 for the same price from best buy. Overall it is a way better system. The sound is clearer and the sub is stronger with the onn, but with the lack of adjustments, I’ve been much happier with the vizio. Plus the vizio has rears with allow for actual surround. The Vizio can get a little buggy sometimes though and has to be power cycled. After going through two of the onns though, I took them back.
Sorry if there's already been a comment regarding this... But do the HDMI ports support HDR? I know they do 4k. I want a sound bar I can connect all equipment to, since my Samsung TV only has 2.
What settings do I need to set my TV too im having trouble connecting mine to the TV for sound to come out of the bar it works properly I tested via buletoothed to my phone and it sounds amazing just having issues connecting to the tv
I just bought this for my projector as I see you have set up on this video. I can’t seem to get rid of the lip sync/ latency. Lips move then I hear the sound and I’m struggling to have the projector sync with the bar, any tips or help in that fix?? I’m Bluetoothing the sound from projector to sound bar. The projector I’m using is the Roku 1080p home theater.
Only way I would be able to do that is with a 25’ hdmi cord from projector to sound bar. The only reason I haven’t done that is because I read that any hdmi cable 25’ or over would still have a latency. But I will do it and see thanks 🙏
@@RythmicCrib92 I've read that too but also depends on the cable I believe as well. Also that's been a known issue with bluetooth is latency either hardwired or wifi protocol would be best to eliminate lip sync issues
Any ideas on how to update the software on the soundbar does it need to be connected to internet by lan as I can’t get my Apple home app to find out connect to the soundbar ?
You can connect it to LAN or connect to it directly through you phone and go to its IP address where a webpage will allow you to connect it to your network, update it, or reset it.
@@joyceycfc1 he was just Saying that the sound bar would connect to its own server somewhere in the world where it could update from there, he probably does not know the exact IP address, more of a technical term
Nice, sound bar setup, I’m impressed and thinking about getting this for my bedroom theater, awesome thanks 😎I also like the way the onn looks. Thanks.

GREAT CONTENT CHOICE! Having a wired 5.2.4 setup plus owning a OLED E-Series, which has it's own integrated Dolby Atmos soundbar! iam forever comparing the two and to be honest with you the sound effects do work, ok its not as loud or dynamic as the wired setup but when played at a lower volume the integrated soundbar is still impressive! conclusion. If I had known what I know now before I went ahead with my concealed wired Atmos setup, I probably would have stuck with the e-series OLED and got a good 2.1 especially in my small 12f × 13f carpeted room environment! (Click the Red Dragon to view)
i'm confused because the onn 5.1.2 is supposed to include the two rear speakers. but, in my walmart, they have an onn section and it has the soundbars, and then the little extra add-on rear speakers you can buy seperately. i'd love to know how adding these on works? anyone know?
How does this compare with non-atmos media? I'm looking at either this or a vizio 5.1, and I doubt I'll be using anything with atmos. Based on that, do you think this would still be better than a 5.1 setup?
I just bought this and when I hooked my apple tv 4k to it dolby vision or hdr wouldn't work. I heard sound but the screen stayed black. It only worked when turning off match dynamic range and turning off match framerate. My tv is a pq65-f1 vizio model with arc. What am I doing wrong? I have 18gbs hdmi cables. My ps5 did the same thing. The TV even kept resetting itself.
@@Kpaceguy I did that finally and now I get all hd video formats but tv says audio is in stereo through apple tv 4k. The only way I get atmos is by using the TV apps. Even though the TV is supposed to support atmos
@@Kpaceguy Thanks, unfortunately that is a deal breaker for me. It was almost a unicorn for 300 bucks if it had DTS. If you have a Blu ray player and some spare time, that would be a really cool test to see if it could decode DTS.
This is exactly where im at, was trying to find out if it did do dts because almost my entire library has dts audio. Ill be passing on this one since it only does atmos and there are others that do both.@@colingbryan82
My money would go to the onn bar. Sony doesn't have up firing speakers so it won't give you dolby atmos like the onn will. Sony also doesn't have high resolution audio on this bar.
@@Kpaceguy I did that before. I think my 2014 Samsung TV is starting to slip away, here's why I think so. I bought a brand new one, just replaced the sound bar, and the new one did not work. What do you think? Seems like the sound from TV is not getting from TV to soundbar?
@@Kpaceguy OK, I just got someone to help me take TV down from the wall and surprise, the two gentlemen that hooked up sound bar did not plug in ARK wire to TV. Plugged it in and took HDMI cable off completely and sound plays perfect, almost two months with no sound bar, but I really want to thank you for all you do helping us with this stuff, Adam.
Peak Power is over 800W? My W Studio from Definitive Technology has "Peak Power Handling" of 200W (sub) and 120W (bar) and it sounds nice. Maybe it's time for me to ditch my old W Studio, it's starting to fail anyway
@@Kpaceguy I tried out the ONN for a whole day. Downloaded every Atmos I could find. I’m in the most ideal area “boxy living room, small, and 9 footish ceiling”. I just did not see THAT much of Atmos effect. So I returned it and bout the 200 Vizio 5.1. Man, in my honest opinion, vizio takes the win. Maybe not in bass, but overall feeling of fullness is great. On the bass, it can be lacking since the soundbar can get so loud. What I did was take apart the sub (I know, crazy lol) and tapped into the signal leads and made an output for my powered 10 inch sub. Ran speaker wire to the sub’s signal input, bam! Beautiful balanced bass when it’s turned up! Just a little hack I learned from my car audio days.
I just bought this Sunday, it comes in Tuesday, does the support dts hd and dts x audio. Alot of my blu rays are in the dts hd format...thanks in advance
Doesnt support dts x !! But i think it does the other dts formats!. Dts x is not the preffered codex for blue rays and games because the coding takes more info space.
It DOES NOT SUPPORT ANY DTS Formats. This is why I unfortunately returned it. It only ever said Dolby Surround when I didn't have ATMOS fed to it. DTS-HD MA sounds amazing and this soundbar+sub only sounded relative to DTS-HD MA quality when fed ATMOS from my 4K UHD Blu-Rays. A real bummer as for the price it was a perfect fit for my setup. From my research online DTS:X support has been added to other brand soundbars from firmware updates, but I can't find out if that is going to happen to this ONN soundbar.

It needs to be atmos it doesn't upscale. You can plug it to your TV
@@hino823 yes
Easy hook up the soundbar via arc and put the fire stick in another HDMI in on our tv. The sound will automatically come through via the firestick
Hopefully still works well
How is the clarity compared to other higher end/priced setups? Sonos Arc for instance
Performs well above it's price tag
@@Kpaceguy Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate your reviews.
@@Kpaceguy One more question… I was considering the Vizio M series. I’m aware it has a leg up as it includes the rear speakers, but how do you think the sound quality of this ONN stacks up against that system?
@@markd2383 dedicated rear speakers are always better. I like the overall sound of the onn better though
@@Kpaceguy Perfect! Just what I needed to know. I will give the ONN a try then. Thanks
When i looked at walmart, the display setup there said atmos on the led thats on the soundbar, mine has never said that, just “dolby surround” when i can get it to stay on that. Using a ps5 and ultra hd disc, hdmi connected directly to the soundbar
Have to change the ps5 audio settings. I don't know if it has Bitstream as an option but that might help
@@Kpaceguy i have tried all of them. Linear pcm, bitstream dolby, bitstream dts. Only thing i get dolby surround on is directv
I'm watching dolby atmos movie on Netflix but soundbar only says dolby surround
@@TMoore-sy7ht your TV has to pass-through dolby atmos
If you look at the owners manual you’ll see that you only get 3.1 sound from the system when you play tracks from USB, Bluetooth, and air play. You can only get the true atmos soundtracks through THE HDMI/ARC connection and I heard there is a firmware update that you need to get by hooking up the LAN to your router to enable a proper ARC/eARC connection between the soundbar and the TV.
How do you update it? I got one yesterday and hooked up Lan line. Not the one that came with it
Any help appreciated. Ty in advance.
I seen a video warning that you should stay away from updating it because it screws with sound 🤦🏾🤷🏾

Well that's not true at all. Most all content is in dolby and if it's in dts it also is in dolby
@@Kpaceguy
And im specifically referring to atmos. Everything has a dolby digital 5.1 track on it.@@Kpaceguy
Does this sound bar have ARC HDMI jack, so it turns on and off with the TV?
Yes
Did you connect it via optical or HDMI? Also, what content can you recommend to watch to experience Dolby Atmos sound? I decided to give it a try but so far I can't find much difference between the regular 2.1 of the comparable wattage and this one 🤔
Any 4k ultra hd bluray with dolby atmos will give you that experience. Optical only gives you 5.1
@@Kpaceguy do you know if supplied HDMI cable is capable or it is better to get fancier one?
@@YevgenLasman the one in the box is sufficient
Probably the dday scene from “Saving Private Ryan.”
@@Kpaceguy hi May I have the link to download the demo files? I went to Dolby website but couldn’t find it.
I have been stuck trying to figure out what the backfiring inside firing speakers should be at, Because when I play music sometimes it sounds hollow if it’s up loud, I was wondering what Dolby Atmos is supposed to sound like And if I should keep the trouble at three or six?
If you have vaulted or angled ceilings or very high ceilings the up firing speakers probably wont work as they are designed.

For some reason I can't get t to Dolby atmos like at Walmart do I need a 4k hdmi cable to get the atmos to work?
You need hdmi 2.0 or 2.1. If your plugging your bluray to the TV your TV needs to support hdmi 2.1 and eARC. If it doesn't you won't get atmos so you'll have to plug the bluray directly to the sound bar
I got the onn. 5.1 and it sounds good but I'm wanting to upgrade to the 5.1.2.
Do I need a certain TV on this? Does it has to be 4K or newest TV in the market? Is the streaming movie produce that kind of quality sounds?
@Daniel Watts yeah he I heard u need earc for atmos
Its now 2023 and i read some reviews of people having sound issues after the update. Curious if anyone has bout this recently or has had any issues in 2023. Want to upgrade my samsung 3.1 system to a 5.1 for watching blu rays and 4k blu rays in the bedroom theatre.
Any way to get the text to stop scrolling across the bar while it’s in use? Just picked this bar up and it’s a huge issue for me with three bar being close to my tv screen.
Mine only does it on initial boot up
How would you compare this to sb36512-f6 comparable in price but it seems onn you can use EArc (not that it matters but for future proof? Maybe?)
I'd like to see an answer for this.
I've done a video on both. If you can find the vizio at the same price as the onn, go vizio
Yes I believe mine did during this demo
What settings do I need to set my TV too im having trouble connecting mine to the TV for sound to come out of the bar it works properly I tested via buletoothed to my phone and it sounds amazing just having issues connecting to the tv
Has to be hdmi arc on your TV and have your TV set to output audio externally
I just bought this for my projector as I see you have set up on this video.
I can’t seem to get rid of the lip sync/ latency.
Lips move then I hear the sound and I’m struggling to have the projector sync with the bar, any tips or help in that fix?? I’m Bluetoothing the sound from projector to sound bar. The projector I’m using is the Roku 1080p home theater.
I'd see if you could hard wire it in any way. Plug your hdmi sources to the soundbar itself then plug the projector to the sound bar
Only way I would be able to do that is with a 25’ hdmi cord from projector to sound bar. The only reason I haven’t done that is because I read that any hdmi cable 25’ or over would still have a latency. But I will do it and see thanks 🙏
I use 25ft and there's no issue so it's worth a try. It can't be any worse
I don't know how or if it can accept updates
You can connect it to LAN or connect to it directly through you phone and go to its IP address where a webpage will allow you to connect it to your network, update it, or reset it.

Having a wired 5.2.4 setup plus owning a OLED E-Series, which has it's own integrated Dolby Atmos soundbar! iam forever comparing the two and to be honest with you the sound effects do work, ok its not as loud or dynamic as the wired setup but when played at a lower volume the integrated soundbar is still impressive!

i'm confused because the onn 5.1.2 is supposed to include the two rear speakers.
but, in my walmart, they have an onn section and it has the soundbars, and then the little extra add-on rear speakers you can buy seperately. i'd love to know how adding these on works? anyone know?
As far as I know this doesn't use rear speakers
How does this compare with non-atmos media? I'm looking at either this or a vizio 5.1, and I doubt I'll be using anything with atmos. Based on that, do you think this would still be better than a 5.1 setup?

It DOES NOT SUPPORT ANY DTS Formats. This is why I unfortunately returned it. It only ever said Dolby Surround when I didn't have ATMOS fed to it. DTS-HD MA sounds amazing and this soundbar+sub only sounded relative to DTS-HD MA quality when fed ATMOS from my 4K UHD Blu-Rays. A real bummer as for the price it was a perfect fit for my setup.
