Tennis players across the United States are switching from tennis to pickleball. Pickleball is played on a smaller court with a lower net and perforated plastic balls. This combination of factors makes pickleball far easier to play compared to tennis. However, good tennis players can translate their tennis skills to any other racquet sport with relative ease. Tennis is by far the most challenging racquet sport to master. It is therefore wise for newly converted pickleball players to not completely abandon tennis. Improvement in their tennis technique will also improve their pickleball skills.

More people, easy access, more fun, more social. Tennis definitely has a high skill ceiling, meaning at some point you need proper technique and coaching to advance. Many times this takes years, and is usually done while younger and growing up. You kind of miss that boat if you're just picking up tennis later in life, whereas Pickleball is always there and you can jump in at any skill level.

Like any racket sport, ping pong included, top play requires great skill and reaction times. In the 70's tennis exploded, but dropped off because many people found tennis was not a sport that can be immediately mastered. Pickle ball can be a high skill racket game, but many find it much easier to play at least at a moderate competitive level without the same skill building as tennis. As for me, give me the competitive juices of a close set and sweet feel of a well struck tennis ball.

Lots of our local courts got converted to pickleball courts. Our local park was able to fit 6 pickleball courts where 1 tennis court was. Anyways, the top pickleball players usually come from tennis. The good tennis players pick-up on pickleball much faster than other people. Good table tennis players do very well when playing at kitchen line. Racquetball players seem to pick up on pickleball kind of slow, as they always seem to try to smash every shot.

  • @tenniswilliam

I can make a comment on this. I am a long term tennis player and I love tennis and have also been involved as a volunteer on two local tennis club executive committees. I think Pickleball is rising quickly and displacing tennis because the tennis community is not all that friendly and welcoming and not proactive enough in encouraging new people or retaining players. I can tell you many times I asked people who had joined a club why they did not come back and they almost always explained that they could not find people to play with. Often too some club players formed cliques and shunned others. It was quite usual to see players that would not play with just anybody. Tennis has a reputation of being an exclusive sport and many clubs reinforce that concept. Pickleball is the opposite as it is is far more social and open. I know several people who I tried to interest in tennis and they joined the club but dropped it for the reasons I gave and went on to Pickleball. I would say too that in some other countries especially in Latin America tennis clubs are way more social holding parties and running interesting social events and they work at building a community. In North America tennis clubs are mostly just a place to play tennis if you are good enough. You do not join a community when you join a tennis club in North America. You do not really make friends at a tennis club just acquaintances. That is a problem. You can make friends at Pickleball however.

When you play mini tennis, it's exactly the same as pickle ball except harder to control, because you still use the tennis balls and tennis racquet, and you have to keep the ball from flying. With PB, there's no trampoline effect from the racquet, and the ball is lighter and designed to not fly through the air so fast. That's why I don't see any benefit PB can give tennis players. Hi Nikola, Excellent review of the pickleball. I love how you hit with the - who looks like - a very good pickleball player. This game is very popular here (North East) as well, of course, during the summer. A lot of outdoor courts have yellow lines for pickleball, which is confusing when you play tennis.
I do have pickleball paddles and my wife and I play it occasionally. In order to not screw up my tennis motion (actually hard to mess it up even more :), I play pickleball with my left hand. I keep playing tennis and table tennis not to compete or have fun, but because I just want to hit the ball well and enjoy the feeling of hitting the ball well: the solid thud of the tennis ball when it's struck well, squarely on the strings, the sensation and sound of speedglue effect rubbers gripping the table tennis ball, and how the ball arcs like crazy in flight when you loop it, and the most godlike looking backhand slap motion that is the table tennis backhand loop.

  • @pinnaclepickleball1453

You can play "little tennis" in singles pickleball, but doubles pickleball is a radically different game. There really aren't passing shots because each player only has to cover 10 feet laterally. Both receivers are at the net after the return, and because the serve and the return must bounce, the servers are generally kept back near the baseline. Because of this scenario, the serving team generally tries to hit soft shots into the Non-volley zone that force the receiving team to hit up from below the top of the net. That gives the serving team time and safe passage to the net where they can engage in strategic soft shots in the attempt to get their opponents to hit the ball high enough to attack and hit down. Rallies are often many hits long. And even if you get into trouble because of a high ball, you can reset the ball by slowing it down and hitting soft into the NVZ again so the opponents can't attack.

I was a usta league & tournament 4.0 player for more than a decade. I quit tennis for pickleball after playing pickleball for the first time! Pickleball is more fun and much more social. My favorite part of tennis, is when all 4 players are at the net... which is practically every rally in pickleball. Tennis is about speed & power. Pickleball is more about quick reflexes and finesse. I loved playing dodgeball as a kid, and pickleball on an advanced level has a lot in common with dodgeball. The two sports have different, yet similar, skill sets. It's childish to argue one sport is superior (or the king). To each their own. If tennis were superior, I'd still be playing it. I find it slow and boring now. 120mph ball with 120 feet to react vs. 60mph ball with 14 feet to react.

    • @juliangay4657
      @juliangay4657 3 года назад

Actually Tennis is superior. The reason why people play pickleball because it's easier. Sports that are more difficult to master tend require two things, talent and or grit, usually both. Some Strong tennis players don't have the best talent, but a lot of grit. Tennis is a much faster sport by science! It is one of the fastest sport they measured. Watching a pickleball match and a tennis match back to back is like watching a sports car (tennis) versus a mini-van (pickleball). So Pickleball to me is someone who doesn't like speed and or power. The dinking and dunking in pickleball drives me insane. For the love of god, play a real sport. Pickleball is basically for the "almost athlete." The intensity level of pickleball is so low, I fall asleep on the court. Good night! Enjoy your slow, boring, snoozing game.

Some even throw their racquets at the ball trying to return it. Add in the spin and slice and good luck. Don't even get me started on big, kick serve above your shoulder to your backhand.

She just couldn't enjoy tennis because it was too hardcore. We tried pickleball for the first time last week and we both had a blast (even though got my workout mainly by chasing the ball). It seems like the appeal of pickleball is more about who can play the sport. There's value in sports that can be enjoyed by a larger portion of the population. I need something that will bring me closer to the people close to me, not something that would take me away from them just because I'm more athletic than them.

One big advantage of PB... there is hardly any need for lessons. My son plays PB at a competitive level, and he has only had one lesson (which frankly didn't do too much). Since the ball is so light and so many shots are improvised drop shots, there is less danger of developing bad habits from playing without lessons.
For example, my son doesn't really split step when he is rushing in to volley. He just runs through his volley to get to the kitchen faster. However, because the ball and paddle are so light, this is not a bad habit the same way it would be in tennis. Some PB people think his lack of split step is a problem, but still, he can compete at a high level and it does get him faster to the kitchen, so its not a barrier the way it would be in tennis.
A lot of similar things can be said about footwork, form, etc. People just learn the strokes as they play, and generally, they can achieve a reasonably high level. If you can hit touch shots and you have good reaction times for high speed volleys, you do fine. No form required.

I also don’t think pickleball has less technique per se. The motions aren’t as exaggerated as tennis, but they are translatable. What works in tennis often works in pickleball, but there are shots rarely used in tennis that are stronger assets in pickleball: when in tennis would you want to hit a stop volley on a half volley? This shot is all-important to my pickleball game because you can’t volley the shots in the kitchen. The forehand slice approach i would use regularly in pickleball as it takes more spin and skids, but a drive would be better in tennis most of the time.

another reason for people in florida switching over to pickleball is that there are indoor pickleball courts but no indoor tennis courts, I live in mid-east florida, and hate when it rains for 4 days straight that Im just itching to hit some balls, indoor pickleball would be the perfect alternative

One key reason to switch to pickleball for me. I was able to start playing men's tournaments with my son at ten years old. No way I could do that with him in tennis due to his height. At twelve now, he and I are very competitive against two skilled men since height isn't that important.

It will be interesting when the fanatical, competitive PB players hit the wall on how good they can get, will they cut back or quit altogether. In tennis. I've seen lots quit when they can't get beyond 3.0, 3.5, or 4.0 rating. The social players will keep playing, but the more competitive get frustrated.

It seems to me that Pickle Ball is popular because it is a more social game and Tennis is more strenuous. In terms of exercise you are going to get a better work out in a much shorter time than with Pickle Ball. Older people will gravitate to Pickle Ball because they simply, likely have more time to do it (again a social game). You video is awesome by the way.

I get the sense that if you have a good net game in tennis then you can transition to being competetive in pickleball pretty easily. Since you now have tried pickleball and obviously play tennis would you say that's the case?

Great video! I think you should make a video review of the multiple options that exist in the market and talk about rackets, dynamic and style, balls used to play the sports, etc.
I am quite surprised on how long this list is:
Spec tennis, Pickeball, Tennis, Paddleball (or Paddle in Spain I believe), Platform Tennis, Beach Tennis (for those who like the sand rather than hard court or clay), Pop Tennis - I may be forgetting some since they seem to pop up all over the place!
NOTE. I am purposefully putting aside more strange sports like squash, racketball, and similar sports.
    Have a great weekend!😀

Thanks, Coach Aracic. It's too bad that tennis courts are being converted to pickleball courts. Is pickleball good for improving the "hands-oriented" style / hand-feel style of tennis? I heard some people talk about how in France and some other countries that they teach the tennis students to learn a more "hands oriented" style.

Want to be clear about the kitchen line rule since it's confusing
You can be in the kitchen, at any time, for any reason. However, you can't take the ball out of the air while you're in the kitchen - that's a fault. If you are behind the line and volley, but your follow through causes you to step in the kitchen, that's a fault.
Because of this, it's almost never a good idea to stand in the kitchen. If you do step in to get a ball, you'll have to get back to the line asap - otherwise you won't be able to legally return it.

i see new pickleball players or former tennis players playing with power and volleys, but very little of the dink game. there isn't much spin in basic pickleball, but there should be a good amount of touch, given the kitchen (no volley zone). the tournament pickleball players are using a good amount of variety for soft/dink shots and power attacking shots. new players, not so much.

Pickleball is also probably more attractive to older people, kids, and women, because it requires less mobility, quickness, and strength. The weight of the tennis racquet, the weight and heaviness and hence the intimidation of the tennis ball in flight, the sore fingers, wrists, and forearm from bracing the racquet against that impact: tennis is a violent sport. As for table tennis, there's the overwhelming height and length of the table for little kids, the emphasis on hand-eye coordination, speed, spin, and spin recognition, especially when receiving serves, and the challenges of playing against low friction rubbers (GOD, there's so much spin involved!) and the awkward stroke mechanics second only to tennis, all those things are also a quick turn off for a lot of people.

Tennis players, even the recreational ones tend not to be inclusive. Go to a local park and watch how more experienced players pretty openly look down on less experienced players. It is pretty easy to see. Perhaps this comes from the fact many learned to play at exclusive referral only country clubs or expensive racket clubs.

Nice video - A lot of my Racquetball friends have gone over to pickleball. He stated that there are no other racquet sports that hit the ball over 100 MPH - From my experience I have played racquetball with players that hit over 140mph. Playing tennis for me is like playing racquetball in slow motion, Pickleball is like racquetball in super slow motion. Probably why Racquetball is dying and Pickleball is growing. Easier to keep the ball in play

Here in Arizona, I rarely see anyone using the tennis courts. The pickleball courts are regularly full, often with a "Paddle Queue" for the next game. All of the new parks are including plans to include pickleball courts. If you love tennis, good for you and stick with it. The great thing about pickleball though is that it's so much for inviting to new players. In a short time you can become proficient enough to casually play and get exercise. Tennis, on the other hand, takes an extremely long time to develop the proper technique to play well. I'm also not sure why there is such hate on pickleball players from the hard-core tennis crowd. Just look at the comments here. Some people must still be bitter from being made fun of in high school by the football and basketball players......so now they take it out on pickleballers.
