- From the start, Lucy and Desi fight as fiercely as they love. After a spur-of-the-moment elopement, the newlyweds buy a small ranch north of Hollywood and call it “Desilu.” They suffer miscarriages and career setbacks, which causes Desi to take his band on the road - where he frequently cheats on his wife. Lucy considers divorce, but when a TV offer comes in, she uses her stardom to keep Desi by her side.

Ben, I am a huge Lucy fan and enjoying these podcasts immensely. Years ago I had the most enjoying mini vacation in Jamestown with my mom. We attended the Birthday Festival Weekend and even stayed an extra day. There was so much to do, people to meet, and even the weather cooperated. One of the nicest people I ever met, and a real gentleman, was Robert Osborne. Such a down to earth person. The first thing he said to me, " you have been waiting in line a long time" and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I was thrilled. A few years later he passed away. I was so sad to read the news article, and very sad for his partner😭 Whenever Lucy mentioned Jamestown, I would think about going to a festival. Mom and I had planned another mother-daughter vacation, but mom was ill. Dad always preferred visiting the Amish company, so we all would go there. Always a great time with my parents who were married 61 years. Did Robert Osborne ever write any books? Always loved watching TCM. Have you ever been to Jamestown???

The whole trend of ship names started with these two, I think. Before Bennifer, it was Desilu
They modeled Desilu on Pickfair, the home of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.

You forgot to mention another of her 1943 MGM musicals, the much-underrated "Best Foot Forward", and she rocked her red hear in that one, too. And she was sending up the stereotype of the movie goddess image as a Hollywood actress who's career is in full decline and her stupid corrupt agent is sending her on a publicity stunt at a boys' military high school graduation dance to resuscitate her moribund career.
Ricky was not the marrying type but Lucy needed him for together they had charisma. Lucy should have kept the relationship as business but was unable. Beautiful love story with the tragic ending.

@@pattyamato8758 Desi was very jealous of Lucy (he wanted monogamy for her, not for himself) When Lucy was starring in The Big Street with Henry Fonda - read how Desi always showed up on the set (uninvited) Finally, they told him he could not come back. (They were prepared to have security throw him out)

By READING the "CC" (Closed Captions) I can also understand much better some of the voice recordings from AGES ago!!
For instance, Mr. Arnaz's voice audio tracks interviews are HARD to comprenhend and understand!

That would be wonderful, and helpful, when no headphones or ear plugs handy and you really don't want to disturb with the sound of your device to anybody else in your room or elsewhere!!

You can choose "Private Video" because it's for your own use and you won't be under infringment of anybody's copyrights!

Google for any of those FREE apps, since they are available from many years ago!!

Broke the race barrier? Desi Arnaz was Caucasian and so was Lucy. They were the same race. His ethnicity was latin. That is not a race.
Well he still wasn't a white caucasian big difference especially in those days and with an accent and Brownish skin very very different.

How " interesting " that Desi (the ladies man) all but demanded Lucy marry him. Until this was revealed, I was sure that Lucy (with her penchant for family) was all but going to propose to Desi.
I once knew a Latin gentleman who was of the opinion that ALL Latin men were somehow genetically pre-programmed to " play the field " even married.

@@tdub102 Yes, it was not a communist revolution - it was a fascist revolution which actually was backed by the US. Later on came Fidel Castro, which was a Communist Revolution overthrowing Batista , was not backed by the US which of course, brought sanctions and problems to Cuba. Years later when JFK got involved with the Bay of Pigs debacle and the CIA's involvement, he had plans to dismantle the CIA- he was assassinated within the year. While I do not believe in all these conspiracy theories which is part of our everyday news - I actually do feel that the CIA was involved in JFK's assassination, as do many people today.

I'm really surprised that Ben Mankowitz, who works for TCM, states that Lucy's movie career dried up after she left MGM. She actually made several movies as a free agent, some of them the biggest hits of her career. Sorrowful Jones, Miss Grant Takes Richmond, The Fuller Brush Girl, etc. Cecil b demille even cast her in his film The greatest show on earth, but Lucy had to bow out because she became pregnant with little Lucie.
Makes a better narrative if she's down for the count before I Love Lucy.

Indubitably ! If Richard Denning had been cast as her husband in "I Love Lucy" as planned, it would have been just another silly 50s sitcom. Of course that's no bad reflection on Richard....he was a fine actor who was equally good in both dramatic & comic roles.

I enjoyed this entire series, but it was a bit jarring to hear Ben say that in "fighting for Desi, Lucy became an accidental champion of fighting the race barrier on television." This is ludicrous, since both were white people. Sure, some white Americans in the 1950s equated whiteness with being Anglo-Saxon or Protestant Northern European (and plenty still do), but in all the ways that mattered, Desi was most certainly white. Had he been thought of as otherwise, the show would never had aired in 1950s America. Ben's comment is not only false, it is frankly insulting to those who faced actual barriers. In this respect, I Love Lucy, as great as it was, is a show entirely of its time: you can count on one hand the number of Black actors who appeared (and they are relegated to the usual roles of porters and the like); and Desi Arnaz, not withstanding, other immigrant actors with accents or foreigners in the show are all the usual parade of stereotypes. The idea that Lucy and Desi were some interracial couple is a 21st century invention, rather than a 1950s reality.
Many people consider Latinos to be people of color.
@@pattyamato8758 Those that do are ignorant. Different ethnic groups can have people of color. But a person’s ethnicity is different from race. Desi’s ethnicity was Cuban/Hispanic but his race was white. Desi was born in Cuba but his parents were Spanish descendants from Spain.
