    Of course, within 48 hours of me publishing a video moaning that there are no plans for new New Cut cycle bridges, the council make a statement suggesting the Camden Road bridge plans could be revived. Hello to everyone ending up here from googling that news story, please accept my apologies that owing to my lack of time machine, this video is outdated before you even watch it :D

    I led both the Langton Street Bridge and Camden Road bridge schemes in 2014. The former wasn't cancelled because of costs. We weren't able to get that far since City Design, one of the internal consultees during the planning process objected to the application for the new bridge to sit alongside the old. Since the Council didn't want to and couldn't legally object to its own proposal in public, we had to withdraw the application. There have been calls for the design to be reused, perhaps opposite Whitehouse Street, but they didn't materialise either. Also, folklore has it that the bridge was painted yellow without permission to reflect the nickname...

    • @PedestrianDiversions
      @PedestrianDiversions  11 месяцев назад +7

      thanks for the correction and further info! I'm slightly annoyed with myself as initial draft said something like "I couldnt find a definite reason for the withdrawal but I assume it was lack of money like the camden road one was" but it seemed overly verbose and nitpicky and 'surely that was the reason'...note to self, never "surely" anything

    I used the footbridge to get to the Swimming Baths opposite there. Growing up in Bedminster, Redcliffe Hill had the most amazing shops! A Fag*** and Pie shop in what was a very ancient frontage, Pets Paradise, wonderful to explore, a proper Milliners, Florence, a Tobacconist, a pub with a children’s room at the back. There was real character there. Couldn’t post unless I edited the culinary item!
    I lived in the Mead Street area, and it was a thriving community.

    Goal Ferry Bridge reopened yesterday to the delight of Bedminster-Centre commuters such as myself. Although cant help feel it would have been better to replace the bridge altogether with something wider/more beautiful. Maybe a new bridge wouldn't have taken a year to install. Always liked the appearance of the banana bridge but its been many a year since i last actually crossed it.

I fully understand, but I'm very happy to see a new one of yours about our fine city when they do appear! This red-flag waving lefty also wonders where all the public money goes to fund these things, it's almost as if it somehow ends up in the wrong places, greasing palms or getting familiar with the inside of brown paper envelopes (or being spent on 'feasibility studies').

    Thanks PD another huge reminder of my youth 8¬) .... like one of your other reviewers I used the bridge to cross from Victoria Park via St Lukes Road to get to the Mayor's Paddock swimming baths (where I learned to swm in the 50's) The building was too narrow for a surrounding walk way so relied on a narrow cantilevered platform on each side to get to the far end.... so it was always an extra incentive to swim back to safety from the deep end! A favourite game prior to Guy Fawkes night was to buy as many 'mighty atom' bangers as we could afford ( a penny ha'penny each) at the nearby sweet shop in St Lukes Road, then strap a few (often 5) together, light the blue touch paper... count to 4 and then cast the bundle from the middle of the bridge hoping for an explosion as they hit the water..... Not recommended these days! We never knew it as 'banana' bridge back then due to it being more battleship grey with rust detailing. Once again A BIG THANK YOU!!!

      This is probably tooooo much information but..... Harford Bridge was named after the Bristol banking family who owned (amongst other homes) Blaise Castle estate now a brilliant open space for all to use - also known to and mentioned by Jane Austen. The Harfords were deeply involved in the development of Ebbw Vale and I believe fairly philanthropic in their methods, as was another member of the family who lived in a mansion called Falcondale (now an hotel) he commissioned in Lampeter, Mid Wales. Not coincidentaly, Falcondale Road skirts Westbury on Trym from which one ajoining road is Lampeter Road. He led a campaign for a railway link between the once Manchester and Milford (Haven) railway station in Lampeter and Aberaeron (Aberayron on old GWR mapping) - Now, like so many other branch lines, providing a beautiful foot & cycle path alongside the river(afon) Aeron...... I said this might be a bit too much of a diversion 8¬)

    Facinating and bizarre indeed that later development to both, north and south connections ignore this structure! It's position now answered, thank-you 😇 it is clearly a bridge waiting for a reason to be there. One wonders 'when' it was painted so, as it is clearly screaming 'I'M HERE, INCORPORATE ME PROPERLY WITH MY SURROUNDINGS PLEASE! (Yes, Safely!) The cut is a menacing channel is it not, akin to a twice daily 'Bristol flushing system' I wonder what uses this facility has been put to over the years! both intended or not 😑 I would love to see the footage of the south area to the railay as I am quite familiar with it at Spring street where HBH is currently based and a temporary school is being built bizarrely! Planners have a duty (I think anyway) to improve where possible and, yes, bring existing infrastructure, like our friend here, back into sensible and creative use!

      tbh most of the better shots ended up in this, i suspect if i ever do do a full vid about the mead street/whitehouse st/bedminster green regen it will be in a few years when they've built enough of it to do some before/after comparisons. if i'm still around by then...for a city with a housing crisis it seems to take awfully long for anything to actually get built. i think factory no1 was under construction when i moved here 7 years ago and still isnt done

      We used to have to spend money raised from transport taxes on, err... on transport.
      Lots of motorways arrived.
      Then they changed it so it complied with the general taxation rules: all goes into a big government pot of gold so it can be shared out across _all_ state projects and in _all_ regions.

I am quite reticent to wade too far into such political and economic questions because I really don't have any answers, but it does seem fairly clear the current setup is not working well
