  • In this episode of Saluki Sleuths, the Alumni Association goes inside Brush Towers.
The Towers are icons of student housing at SIU, not to mention the tallest buildings in Carbondale. Not so long ago they were slated for demolition, however today they're back in service with new generations of students living and learning in them. We take a look at the past and present of the Towers at SIU.
A huge thank you to Morris Library for the historical photos shown in this video.

I went there back in 1969. Neely and Mae Smith were women only with mean matrons guarding the lobby to keep boys out. I lived in Allen, which is gone now. Back in '69, they couldn't build dorms and classrooms fast enough. The university and town were booming.

I lived in Wright Hall the first year I was at Southern- 1974- it was great, I remember the bridge over the creek on the walk to Trueblood dining hall. I am very grateful that the plan to tear down "The Three Towers" was re-thought; they are such a part of the character of the campus it would be a terrile loss.

I lived in Neeley. Back when I went here, Neeley was the drinking hall, for 21 and over. Good times.
