James was so right when he said he wanted to address the loss of a friendship in a song/album partly because it's so unusual to find the topic in music; most heartbreak tracks are about partner issues but, if we think about it, friendships might mold and define us even more. Plus, the video feels so accurate in depicting the musical and lyrical atmosphere of the whole album, since I get the impression that James is in a constant kind of emotional limbo, not quite living nor completely dying (for instance, songs like Funeral or Frozen manifest this state of numbness and delicate tension between life and death, and even on this very song the chorus' harmonies seem to be descending on a [beautiful] downward spiral). The end also feels precise because he appears to be relieved to finally be free from his cast or physical/emotional hindrances, but also afraid and even apprehensive to fully dive into the water/new experiences, reflecting on "you're the last of my old things, the cast from my broken limbs". The message might then be: how much is he (or are we) able to leave the past behind against how dependent and even masochistic we have become to those traumatic situations that subconsciously make us feel a connection (no matter how twisted or toxic it can be) to our past and ultimately form a certain type of sense of belonging?
"you're the last of my old things" I've been hurting a lot this year over losing a relationship with someone that's been with me over very pivotal years of my growth. I've never been that close with anyone before. It feels so hard moving on into the rest of my life leaving behind a love that has taught me so much and is very much a part of me now. I'm just staying looking at a fading fire, just trying to remember it a little bit before having to move on
