Maybe the Nirvana version was so good because the Devo song has so much potential. I still prefer Devo's version, but I do believe Nirvana did it justice. BTW, Nice bass in your avatar. I play bass too.
I emailed Jerry in the 90s and he told me he didn’t like Nirvana’s take. He then rebuked me when I replied that maybe he doesn’t like punk rock by saying “Devo IS punk rock!” True story.
Used to listen to this B side in a pizza place in Midland, Tx. Love it. And yes, Davos Nix, the Nirvana version is quite f*cking good!! Rock on, fellow spud boys!
I love how people here are arguing over different versions of this song instead of actually listening to it. For me, it depends on which mood I’m in. If I’m kind of depressed, I prefer the nirvana version, if I’m not, I prefer this version. They both did this song justice. For me it just depends.
This is the cleaned up version I remember from a 45 with Whip It on the other side. This is not the version from Recombo DNA put out by Rhino. I can't find this version of Turn Around anywhere. Thanks for the memory.
Take a step outside yourself Then you turn around Take a look at who you are It's pretty scary You're so silly Well it's revolting You're not much If you're anything Take a step outside the city And you turn around Take a look at what you are Well it's revolting You're really nowhere You're so wasteful So foolish No big deal Who said don't look back Don't you believe 'em You go for that corner seat in the restaurant 'cause they're gonna try and get behind ya Don't you let 'em do it You know what i'm talkin' about? You hear me talking? It's pretty scary It's so revolting Take a step outside the country Then you turn around Take a look at where you are Well it's amazing Take a good look You're no big deal You're so petty It's a laugh Take a step outside the planet You turn around and round Now take a look at where you are It's pretty scary
Gotta post my thoughts on the 'Nirvana version vs this version' debate. I prefer the Nirvana version mostly because Devo's kind of dispassionate style is less to my liking, and that amazing chord progression just sounds so much better played on Cobains more distorted guitar. This version is very cool, though, no doubt about it :-)
childrens discussion? LOL devo weren't even 15 years in the market by the time Nirvana came around to match their success. be grateful that people today even know about devo, they would be long forgotten if it weren't for the big bands that paid tribute over the years
I like devo but i always prefer covers of their songs by other band way better. like nirvana's cover of this one or DI's cover of "uncontrollable urge" and many more. they just sound better. Devo is too tame for me.
I still prefer the Nirvana version, but this is pretty good! EDIT (8/30/2023) - I've gotten more into the original Devo version since posting this comment over half a decade ago. More so than Nirvana's cover.

Thank you Nirvana for bringing me here. So good!

When I was 9 or 10 I asked my father to get 'Whip It" and this was the B side. I liked this better!
one of the best bands ever

they're totally different but now finally hearing the original I appreciate the nirvana cover more despite the obvious differences in style.
not necessarily appreciating it more than original, just in general
nobody in any art form can "do anything better" than an original. Without an original, there would be no remakes

I love the Nirvana version, one of the best covers ever, but this just sounds better.
Devo only reminders me about Futurama.
Devo was listed at one of the top inspirational bands for Nirvana, according to Cobain's notebooks.

Ya hear me talkin?!
I like this and the Nirvana virsion
Both versions are great tbh
I disagree, but that may because I heard the Nirvana version first. I now have that in my head when I hear this song, and I just like it better.
Take a step outside yourself
Then you turn around
Take a look at who you are
It's pretty scary
You're so silly
Well it's revolting
You're not much
If you're anything
Take a step outside the city
And you turn around
Take a look at what you are
Well it's revolting
You're really nowhere
You're so wasteful
So foolish
No big deal
Who said don't look back
Don't you believe 'em
You go for that corner seat in the restaurant
'cause they're gonna try and get behind ya
Don't you let 'em do it
You know what i'm talkin' about?
You hear me talking?
It's pretty scary
It's so revolting
Take a step outside the country
Then you turn around
Take a look at where you are
Well it's amazing
Take a good look
You're no big deal
You're so petty
It's a laugh
Take a step outside the planet
You turn around and round
Now take a look at where you are
It's pretty scary
The Nirvana version of this is so fucking good

Who gives a damn about a flash in the pan like Nirvana? This is Devo. Take Nirvana children's discussion to a Nirvana video.

to say Nirvana is a "Flash in the pan" is a total understatement.
What a pretentious comment and on a Devo video, of all things.
Uncle Twerky that's such bullshit

Listened to freedom of choice by lagwagon?
this comment gave me AIDS.
Now I can see where that erratic guitar riff comes from... I didn't know Nirvanas was a cover. Damn it all
David Benally Since it comes from this band (which was the rebel punk band of the 80s), it should be more awesome.
I still prefer the Nirvana version, but this is pretty good!

It really is scary. Man this world is fucked.
Nirvana brought me here
stoned again...
direwoof3 lol me too dude
@@anactualalpaca7016 it's pretty scarry
I put both the cover & the original in my Devo playlist. Thanks for uploading!
Sin 34 also covered this smash hit song.
RIP Julie
Just because of Nirvana, I mean I love them but stop thinking about the cover. DEVO is amazing and I know them because of David Bowie
Both DEVO and Nirvana suck. There, that should settle it.
Kurt would approve.
Crimson_Ghost Alrighty
DEVO RULES ALL!!! Nirvana, not so much, so that doesn't settle a damn thing
no rockstars, everyone sucks!
Nirvana did it better
Nope.
Oh my goddd nirvana fans r so fucking annoying
