Time will tell if this video gets GOAT status, but I can already tell it has a permanent residence in my mind-palace… Excellent work, Riloe.
When you consider that Vulture's son Arthur was created by a wish, by the Zone's interpretation of what a "perfect human" ought to be, you could say that his expression of altruism, the words that Red repeats when he reaches the golden sphere, is the Zone's idea of what humanity "wants" or thinks it should want. When Red repeats his words, he's not just suffering from choice overload, he's actually giving back the wish that Arthur would have made had he not been killed. This is an act of personal charity to Arthur, not to mention whatever global implications the wish will have, but it is also an act of charity to the Zone itself -through Red and Arthur the Zone is able to wish for itself, to actualize whatever desire it may have, conscious or unconscious. And that is kinda sorta maybe what the plot of Stalker 2 is about... indirectly... if you read between the lines of Scar and Faust's ramblings.
@@Bluehawk2008 yes the idea that Dina and Arthur are actually just reflections of the Zone is super important. It’s honestly was a bit deep to get into in this video but it’s one of the most interesting aspects of the book’s representation of the Zone as a “mirror” on human desire.

Another masterwork from Riloe who seems to somehow know my interests on a deeply spiritual level. Roadside Picnic was my first exposure and then I went to play the games
Funnily enough, I also went into SoC blind, and I got the True Ending first try. I think it's because that also reflected my own desire: I wanted to know the truth. I wanted to explore. I wanted to save people. Throughout my entire journey, I risked bullets and medkits to keep my buddies alive (not counting enemies like Freedom since I sided with Duty---so I ended up having to assassinate the whole base just so Skull and his gang could live). I took unnecessary risks to check out unexplored areas. And I went through hell in the CNPP being so unprepared with not enough medical supplies and just barely enough ammo for my G36C. But it was worth it to know the truth.
Fantastic video! I recently picked up the audiobook of Roadside Picnic, as I was interested in STALKER 2 and wanted to learn where it came from, and I wasn't prepared for the richness of ideas it had embedded into what is a very down-to-earth, simple story. (Btw, the Strugatsky's comments at 2:30 about the origins of the term were written in the afterword of an edition of Roadside Picnic, an afterword you can readily find online. Also some great insight into how it came to be published and what it was like being a Soviet scifi writer during the middle and late days of the USSR.) I think beyond the way the ideas behind Stalkers and the Zone capture my imagination is how incredible it is that both a film and a game series jumped off from the book's core concepts with their own interpretations of the Zone and the people around it. But all of them keep the core questions and philosophical underpinnings of Roadside Picnic to some extent. Just goes to show how many of us can deeply connect to the Zone and its mysteries.
This feels like heavy inspiration to the virtual reality game called into the radius. The story, lore, mechanics, art, and playstyle. It all matches. Some stuff differs, of course, because you are alone in into the radius and names for items are changed. But I like how much of stalker is used in a newer game.
amazing video! I am glad you took on the subject that we are told what we want and persue it, instead of just living our lives the way we actually want to, even if we find ourselves lost or wrong with our own beliefs and needs. I know that wasn't your words exactly but that was my understanding related to it
That was riveting. “To look at humanity and interpret.” Pretty much what all good art does. Thanks. Really enjoyed that. I’m currently playing Stalker 2.
I'm unsure if you have or haven't looked into Absurdism, but you absolutely should. It perfectly encapsulates the philosophy surrounding the zone and its inhabitants. Those that run with it, live, and those who don't die. Despite everything we tell ourselves, life ultimately has no meaning and it is irrational, similar to the zone. But it doesn't mean we cannot find meaning in places ourselves. It is about that struggle, and it is about the perseverance that we have, like the Loner who ventures out just to make enough to scrape by. "The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart." -Albert Camus Amazing video, Riloe. Thank you.
I will always remember the first reading of roadside picnic, and then metro 2033. They were both incredible masterpieces that made me almost obsessed with their ideas. It’s SUCH a cool vibe
I was 15 when I found Roadside picnic and that book has grown to become my all time favorite. Also the movie is I credibly well done and a tragic tale straight out of the zone in its own right and worth a watch.
when i clicked on this video i was expecting some game specific lore stuff, i am pleasantly surprised to have found this type of video instead. it was amazing.
So sick that shiey made the cut for this video! You rock Riloe, your perspective and the work you put in to your videos make for such a special experience. I actually stopped watching to finish reading Roadside Picnic and I’m happy I did - well worth the wait! It would be cool to see more Stalker content from you but no matter what you make next, I’m stoked for it 🖤
I knew this was coming and couldn't wait. I knew everything included, but I knew Riloe would put together a banger. This is my favorite game series. I first played the originals before putting hundreds of hours playing Stalker Anomaly, playing through with every faction start. Absolutely well done, Riloe. Good hunting, stalkers
What a masterpiece of a video. This just put into words ideas I had about the stalker franchise, about my fascination with it, with the concept of survival itself. I feel like I understand myself better with this. Like I'm more of a person, almost.
Listening to roadside oicnic on audiobook now. Its so good, its like its meant to be an audiobook. Especially with the interview in the beginning and the stream of consciousness. Will return to this video once I’m done. Looks like another great video brewinv
Awesome video! I'm not sure how you manage to discuss relatively dry (if interesting) subjects like philosophy and psychology in such an utterly compelling way, but I'm glad for it.
I saw your forever winter video and immediately thought of stalker, i love the execution and the approach you took to explaining the series. The only thing on my bingo board now is a titanfall video
The Stalker may leave the zone, but the zone will never leave the stalker. The series and franchise of stalker isn't just a piece of media, its a feeling, a state of mind you go into when you consume that art. I have seen people fall into states of depression from this game, and also people that would find newfound hope in it aswell. This is why I love stalker so much. Edit: please also watch the lemonbeans video on "why everyone is playing stalker" its a very good vid. If you can't play the original trilogy, i would recommend playing STALKER Anomaly, its a free version with all the mechanics of the games, sincerely recommend
24:38 For those interested, I happen to know what this song is called, and wanted to tell others. Its a song from in-game in STALKER that the npc’s can play on their guitars called “he was a good stalker”
Once again, you've taken a medium often overlooked and demonstrated the cultural and artistic value. I would 100% listen to a weekly podcast by you. Excellent work.
i made that strelok quote at the end my senior quote, sometimes i think back and think to myself "maybe i should've done a quote from halo since it's made me grow into who i am" but it the quote just, felt right
Thank you for your video. The only thing it lacks is the word "atmosphere", that's used a lot by us Ukrainians when we describe STALKER (the game, mostly). The rest - pretty accurate!
25:34 I don't think this is true, actually. I'm fairly certain that the Strugatsky brothers intended for the book to be pure science fiction and not be tainted by Cold War politics, as evidenced by them choosing to base it in an unnamed region of North America (which very well might have been in Canada, and not the US), rather than in their home country of the USSR.
I would agree it wasn't about "cold war politics" per se. But the book is a clear critique of capitalism, and while not a direct part of the story, the Strugatskys were CONSTANTLY fighting soviet censors to tell the stories they actually wanted to tell. Picnic was one of the worst, and it took years to actually get past the artistic beauracracy's censorship. The afterword of the new editions of the book, written by Boris, goes into this pretty heavily

The quality growth with every new video u make. I thought it would be a Stalker 2 review, and did not expect the depth of the analysis
this needs way more love. good freaking job man.
I have loved Stalker, Roadside Picnic, and all of its inspirations for so long, so this got me an instant subscribe.
A 40 minute Riloe video. We eating good tonight lads
Pure goosebumps. This might be my favorite video of your Riloe ❤❤❤
Every vid from this dude is better than the most recent AAA games, this man is incredible.
You are so brave for admitting you went to the wish granter in your very first playthrough🙏
This video is absolutely amazing. I'm so glad I found your channel a few weeks ago.
It's "тоска́" in russian. And "ту́га“ ( in some cases "журба́" ) in ukranian. Apart from that, great video 🔥
"The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart." -Albert Camus
Amazing video, Riloe. Thank you.
Thank you for your part in fulfilling Red's wish. Great content, great editing and format.
И чтобы никто не остался обиженным...
Very nice video , analysis , synopsis. Perfect little cozy morning watch. Thank you kindly for your time .
I will always remember the first reading of roadside picnic, and then metro 2033. They were both incredible masterpieces that made me almost obsessed with their ideas. It’s SUCH a cool vibe
@@HurtyTeefs I need to read Metro next!
@ the 2nd and 3rd ones are decent but the first one is the masterpiece, definitely a must read
@@riloegamingIt’s another slow read full of philosophical musings on human nature like Roadside Picnic. You’d definitely love it.
I was 15 when I found Roadside picnic and that book has grown to become my all time favorite. Also the movie is I credibly well done and a tragic tale straight out of the zone in its own right and worth a watch.
You can always count on Riloe to deliver a banger at 7 in the morning
Beautiful video. I love games and media that say more about the viewer than anything else, and STALKER definitely can match up to that.
Best gaming commentary vids on all of YT and it’s not even close.
when i clicked on this video i was expecting some game specific lore stuff, i am pleasantly surprised to have found this type of video instead. it was amazing.
Thank you!
So sick that shiey made the cut for this video! You rock Riloe, your perspective
and the work you put in to your videos make for such a special experience.
I actually stopped watching to finish reading Roadside Picnic and I’m happy I did - well worth the wait! It would be cool to see more Stalker content from you but no matter what you make next, I’m stoked for it 🖤
An actual analysis like this that isn't just simply a recap is disappointingly rare.
@@zambsDGOW thank you!
I literally stopped the video…. Saved it… listened to the entire audio book… and then came back so I could truly appreciate this video.

I love your videos and I'm glad you decided to cover Stalker & Roadside Picnic
Great work man this was really informative and beautifully edited
17:20 and yet he yerns for the mines!!!!!!
I saw your forever winter video and immediately thought of stalker, i love the execution and the approach you took to explaining the series. The only thing on my bingo board now is a titanfall video
Longest video on this channel and a subject that is of mass interest to me?!?! Zooo wee mama, i gotta watch this later
Damn.... This is right up there with Jacob Geller. Nice work. Your pragmatic way of explaining is pleasant to listen to.
Well, that dove SLIGHTLY deeper than I was expecting.
Monolith? Oh monolith, hear my calls, I cannot hear you monolith. Where are you monolith, oh monolith, you have left your children.
24:38
For those interested, I happen to know what this song is called, and wanted to tell others. Its a song from in-game in STALKER that the npc’s can play on their guitars called “he was a good stalker”
ty
This might be your best yet
Also I deadass jumped out my seat when I saw a 40 minute Riloe video
Once again, you've taken a medium often overlooked and demonstrated the cultural and artistic value. I would 100% listen to a weekly podcast by you. Excellent work.
HOLY SHIT Riloe and STALKER what a combo!
So much cheeki, and yet so little breeki.
@@_fedmar_ I think there is a fair amount of breeki
Aweome video. Loved that ending.
i made that strelok quote at the end my senior quote, sometimes i think back and think to myself "maybe i should've done a quote from halo since it's made me grow into who i am" but it the quote just, felt right
its a great morning when Riloe posts a Video, even better when its a Stalker vid! This was so good dude, thanks!
Another Awesome video man, i find your style to be captivating and thought provoking. Will be stoked for the next one✌️
thank you so much!
Thank you for your video. The only thing it lacks is the word "atmosphere", that's used a lot by us Ukrainians when we describe STALKER (the game, mostly). The rest - pretty accurate!
These stills that Riloe got of the Zone are sooo cool! And remind me of Tales From The Loop stype and vibe.
This was beautiful!!!
Always making be love and appreciate the thing you are covering ever more.
Subscribed, hopefully more well spoken, high quality videos to come. I love learning
this is now one of my fav videos out here
25:34 I don't think this is true, actually.
Alright, next I’m reading roadside picnic.
Oh awesome a Riloe video!
*40 Minutes later*
Well that was beautiful, and now I'm crying.
