    26:44 on the road is outrageous.. every bit as impressive as Bekele's 26:17 on track for me

    You can't paste links on youtube, so I can't give a direct link, but I can tell you how to get there.
    1)Go to google and search "Something New in Training: The Methods of Renato Canova".
    2)Click the top hit
    3)Scroll down slightly and click the tinyurl link
    4)Profit!!
    That is a detailed summary (with actual training plans) of coach Renato Canova's (coach of many top Kenyan athletes) training philosophy with specific schedules of several elite runners.

    Is this a joke?
    Think of it this way, .2 is obviously 1/5 of a mile. 4:18 pace is 258 seconds per mile. So one fifth of that is 51.6 seconds, which gives you the correct time of 26:43.
    4:18 pace is....wait for it....26:43 for a 10km race. How do you not understand this?
    Run for 4:18 for six miles is 25:48. At 4:18 pace it takes...51.6 seconds to go two-tenths of a mile. This is a time of 26:39.6. The extra few seconds is because a 10k is marginally longer than 6.2 miles.

  • @AgencyEric

    @kozmon0t The track is faster. Having good competition is without a doubt helpful, but remember that most world records are solo efforts, with perhaps some rabbiting at the start to get going smoothly. Just take a look at Bekele's 10,000m WR; he runs almost of that race solo.
    Like Bekele, Komon also had rabbits in this race as well. The track is just plain faster because the typical Mondo surfaces are much springier than asphalt, not to mention the absolute lack of any elevation change at all

  • @AgencyEric
    @AgencyEric 12 лет назад

    @cbr1100xxrules Yea, it's pretty insane stuff. I'd venture to guess the typical person would struggle to run that pace as a 400m sprint.
    Yet for the elites they can run that type of pace and have it smooth and relaxed. Different world though when you can run low 50s 400m and go for a light jog at 5:45 pace.

  • @AgencyEric

    O really?
    That's explains perfectly why we haven't been able to isolate any specific genes or find significant genetic difference between the East Africans and other countries.
    Or why the rest of the world is catching up in distance running...

  • @HugRunner
    @HugRunner 13 лет назад

    Holy sh*t.... The speed and endurance is just unreal. Amazing. Wish the whole race was recorded and uploaded though. He is like 10 minutes faster than what for many runners would be considered very good times (35-36 min), requiring a lot of practice. Even getting under 40 mins in 10 km takes quite some effort. 2:40 min/km for 10 km... wow...

    Although track is flatter, id just like to say that running on a track creates boringness. For me, all my distance pr's come from xc season during races, 1 mile, 2 mile, 3 mile splits are all better than when i try to run on track. and the splits are at the right distance too. scenary helps you run

    4:18 x 3 = 12:54 (3 miles) x 2 = 25:48 (6 miles) x 31/30 (.2 miles) = 26.57 mins or 26:34 for a 10k
    10k = 6.2 miles...So this race has about 4:20 pace

  • @AssHoleThunder
    @AssHoleThunder 12 лет назад

  • @AgencyEric
    @AgencyEric 12 лет назад

    No. This race has 4:18 pace. 4:20 pace is 26:55 for 10km.
    Your math for .2 miles is incorrect. It's 51.6 seconds for the .2 miles if your going 4:18 pace (1/5 of 258 seconds is 51.6). That gets you a 26:39, but a 10k is actually 10.2137 miles which makes it the correct 26:43 winning time.

  • @AgencyEric

    While 26:48 is a GREAT time for anyone, Galen's run was on the track, and this on the roads which are slower even for a flat/nearly flat course.
    What's so exciting about Galen though is his improvement curve...the guy just hasn't stopped getting better each year! O.O

  • @AgencyEric
    @AgencyEric 12 лет назад

    I agree that this is often true for many, but by the time you reach the elite level that just isn't as much of an issue. At that level they are completely focused on just racing each other and staying with/making moves within the pack.
    More importantly the track is a faster surface outright than the roads due to its uniformity, springiness, and ability to use spikes.

  • @AgencyEric
    @AgencyEric 12 лет назад

    Because you grow up (USA assumed here) thinking in mpm. It's just the standard. People talk pace per mile, not ppk
    Especially with the mile being an "iconic" distance in the US it's also a way for runners to relate to other runners. Most of us (runners) know that when we are running 4:00km we are running right around 6:25/mile pace. However, if you tell they average person that you ran 4:00/km pace they have no clue what that is.
    Metric IS better, but u cant relate to ppl with it well enough

  • @AgencyEric
    @AgencyEric 12 лет назад

    Thats probably true. They kinda have a vague idea that under 4 is insane, under 5 is fast, and under 6 means your in really good shape but beyond that yea it might as well be the same. 4:07 isn't really any different than 4:53. It's not sub 4 but "faster than they can run".
    That or you talk to people who used to do relaxed 8 milers with their unit at 5:45 pace...

  • @RunninAD

    I'm familiar with the system, I study physics. But our road markers are all in miles(like trails with markers for splits, high school races are the 800 1600 and 3200. Or pretty much the half-mile, mile, and two mile. Yes, metric makes more sense, but it's hard to change when the old system is embedded in everything we do.

    I just mean if I'm on a run and I want to do repeats on a trail, it's all marked for miles not kilometers. I agree that the US should have changed a very long time ago, but the sad reality is that a large faction of citizens don't know the first thing about the metric system. But back to running, such a cool video

  • @futureleader137
    @futureleader137 11 лет назад

    metric makes way more sense than english. in my engineering classes i HATE using english units. but i was born and raised thinking in mph and mpm, not kilometers. take a look at history: it was the prestigious 4 minute mile, not the 2:20km. when you ask someone what a marathon is, they say 26.2 miles, not 42.2km. and you complicated your calculation, simply divide time by 6.2 to get mpm, you don't need to go to km first.

  • @ballefras
    @ballefras 11 лет назад

    Sure all people who uses the metric system will say that a marathon race is 42,2km or 42,195 if they want to be accurate. If you look at IAAF rules, it is stated the the route must have KM marks, but no rules on miles marker. So Marathon is a bad example if your statement is that miles in the standard over meters
